Bartering, trading and why I think the dollar is REALLY losing value with people like me
So anyone who knows me will tell you that I have political opinions, but I don't share them, I don't debate, and I don't get on my soapbox with them. And I most certainly don't post them on Facebook: too many of my friends don't share my opinions and I truly don't want to lose friends over them. However. The things that affect my life directly - the ag laws, the restrictions on land use (think zoning and the places that dictate you need a minimum of four acres to be allowed to keep chickens - and no roosters!), the people who think that agricultural use of land should be something that doesn't occur in their back yard, the children growing up who think that food comes from the store, not farms... That kind of thing will have me spouting invective quicker than a goat ... [ Read More ]
Trophy Gilling
Trophy Gilling An early morning snowmobile ride to a trophy bluegill lake had me pumped. At minus ten below, it was a little cool out but little did I think that full face protection would be needed. It wasn’t that far. Well, yeah. Little did I think. I should have known better. Luckily the Bearcat had a high windshield and provided me a little shelter from the wind. I did, however, have to keep peeking over it, as it was crusted over with frozen road debris and hard to see. The ride, which approached unbearable, ended with us reaching our little back-in-the-bush honey hole and I could feel the pain. No frostbite was experienced but I had to be pushing it. Oh the lengths we go to catch big bluegills. Out on the lake, we found fishing to be slow but every once in a ... [ Read More ]
Meat rabbits – the early days!
During this cold weather (and yes, I know it's all relative, I live in the South. It's cold for the South!), I have been bunking up rabbits two to a cage so that they all have someone to snuggle to keep warm. Generally I pair mamas and babies, or youngsters two or three to a cage, but I found myself with a spare male/female New Zealand White combo and decided to put them in together. They've been living companionably for at least three months now, and I figured it was too cold for them to breed (fertility really tanks when the weather is cold) so I wasn't that worried about babies. However. When I went out to the barn this Sunday, I noticed that there was white fur sticking out of the front of the cage and immediately assumed the worst; I'd smelled a skunk while I was milking that ... In The Zone Migratory Spring Bass
As the late winter early spring time frame approaches giant bass start their instinctual journey from main lake basins folowing specific routes and finger ares toward secondary staging points. This is a time to take into consideration a few major factors to keep you on the largest fish in any systems you target. The combination of South winds pushing water temperatures up a few degrees, bass stalling on routes during high winds and cold fronts and the vertical stacking factor during these periods of unstable weather during the first stage of Spring, all must be combined with reading activity levels during specific daily bite windows. Recognizing all these elements on the water and determining quick changes during specific barometric pressure change will keep you focused on choosing the ... [ Read More ]
Don’t Leave Home Without One…
Here’s some advice on how to use one piece of equipment to double or triple your ice fishing success. Flashers can make a cold day on the ice turn red-hot! With the hard water season in full swing I wanted to touch on my favorite piece of gear for the ice, a piece of equipment that I never leave home without…the flasher. When it comes to ice-fishing, a flasher is one of the most important pieces of equipment in an angler’s arsenal. It can open up a whole new exciting world of fishing for you, not to mention double your triple your success overnight. Flashers are electronics that are easy to use, compact, rugged, and built to withstand the harshest elements of winter. Flashers can quickly tell you the depth of water you’re fishing, if there is any structure or baitfish present, ... [ Read More ]
The Spirit of Fishing
The best place to be is on the ice. What draws us to the ice or to the water is tough to answer in a nutshell. There are far too many good answers to that question, and most of us will answer it differently. Even though we grew up differently, in different areas, and in some cases, different eras, we can all unite on the water in its two most popular forms, ice and water, my favorite form being the hard water version. I have spent a lot of time on the ice over the years, developing patterns, tweaking gear, perfecting the nuances of my fish house, wondering where that school of fished just went, smiling while gazing into the eyes of a big bull bluegill or gripping the lip on a slab crappie. The complexity of trying to describe an ice fishing trip is overwhelming at times and often gets ... [ Read More ]
Raising meat rabbits on the homestead
Each year on our farm, I try to add one more thing of value. It can either be another big item on our road to self-sufficiency (I bought a fourwheeler one year), a commitment to spend a set amount throughout the year on stored food for our prepping box (rice, flour etc) or an additional animal type to bring in to the farm (such as the Angora goats we bought a couple of years ago for fiber). This year is the year of the rabbit. I don’t mean the two fuzzy Angora rabbits that I keep for fiber to spin with my mohair, and I don’t mean the (financially unproductive but fun) Dutch bunnies that I raise to show. I mean meat rabbits. Some places I hang out, I don’t openly admit that I raise rabbits for meat. These days, it seems to be an invitation for animal rights activists and House Rabbit ... Catching Fish during a Tough Bite.
Catching Fish during a Tough Bite Cold temps have kicked-in all across the Midwest and lots of lakes are averaging 20+ inches of ice. February can be a challenging month for Hardwater anglers because of: cold temps, snow drifts on lakes, ice thickness and low oxygen levels in water. When the bite slows down and fish appear on your Vexilar but don't bite, it's commonly called "Negative Fish." Over the last couple weeks, I've been chasing Walleyes/Jumbo Perch/Crappies in Minnesota, North Dakota & South Dakota; below are a couple tactics that helped during my Ice Fishing adventures. Go Deep - Last weekend I was at the Minneapolis Boat Show talking fishing @ the Alumacraft booth (anxiously waiting to test drive their new Tourney Pro Sport 185) and the most common ...
