Cool catch on a crankbait...

Recommended Posts

I was fishing the Mississippi around the Champlain area yesterday, thrownig a shad rap by some wood. Something banged it really hard. Channel cat, about 17" long. Anybody else ever catch a cat throwing cranks?

Fishing a tournament on the Horeshoe Chain a few years back my partner caught about 20 of them one day during a bass tournament throwing cranks...

Last year in the elk river area I had about a 15 incher nail my mepps spinner...I watched him shoot out of the cover he was in and chase my spinner up to the boat and grab...was pretty cool.

I used to plug for smallies in the Mississippi, from the Coon rapids dam on down to about the Camden area..... Sometimes from shore, sometimes out of my canoe.

My favorite plug was about a 6" gold floating Rapala...I thought it would more imitate a small carp, I used to catch all kinds of stuff on that thing and alot of cats. Even got a small musky once.

Like one of the other posters stated, it seemed I would have better luck nailing the cats on the plugs when the water was low?

My buddy and I have each caught flat heads on cranks on The St. Croix. One was 45 # and the other was 32#. Both were in the fall using lead core line, deep.

I have pics of both of them!

Get those nice channels every now and then on the croix trolling cranks, caught a sturgeon on a small huskyjerk last year and that was really weird!

I have caught flats up to 30lbs and many 10+ lb channels on cranks (including about a 15lb my last time out). They love them. I found a few years ago that adding a rattle really gets the cats active.

Catfish are flat out the +1 predator in most water where they are found. They will hit anything and fight like crazy.

Not a cool crankbait story... but kind of a one cool none the less.

I was fishing this morning on an east metro lake from the shore. Targeting bass with a T-rigged senko. Caught a few here and there but on one particular cast I felt a hit... so I set the hook and, Wham! "Got him! I thought to myself. Oooh, this guy is a fighter!"

as I'm reeling this badboy in I see a bright flash of yellow... It was a big ole' sunnie, probably around the 9 inch mark. While setting the hook, I foul hooked him right in his side. Seeing this as I got him up to shore I dropped my pole on the ground and whipped out the needle-nosed pliers and started surgery. I cut the eye off the hook rather than tear him up, and got him back in the water as fast as possible. Fish are certainly biting today. Must be the weather front coming in.

On one occassion I was throwing a cranks into the shallow gravel along the St. Croix and felt a stump hit. I thought I had landed me a fish but when reeling in there was no tug. So I thought I had snagged something. Upon inspection turn out to be a clam that hit my crank bait.

There has been more than a few occasions where clams have attacked my various types of bait. Minnows, leeches, worms etc.

I have caught several clams trolling Rapalas on the Mississippi. Other than that I snagged an anchor rope one time trolling and pulled in an anchor.

My cool catch on a crankbait was a 7' MH Ugly Stick with an old school spincasting reel. I didn't end up using the reel, but the rod got outfitted with a Pflueger Echelon reel and I use it regularly. Can't argue with getting a new rod/reel combo for half-price tongue.gif.

I guess I didn't catch this one but really snagged it.

Ended up trolling up a break and back down. Would hit up the buttom a little from time to time. Noticed it was pulling a little more then usual.

Funny this topic is up. I was out fishing this evening in a local area lake and caught a 7 1/2 lb channel cat with a #9 Rapala floater. That was fun! The bass were nailing it as well but they didn't fight like this one did!

I quit a little early today and went down to the river for a few casts. I wasn't using a crank bait, but I did catch a pretty weird fish on a little blue Twister Tail...I got of all things a 12-14 inch Rainbow Trout!

Thick fish as rainbows go and nice and deep. It had all the colors a stream trout has except it was really light. Even the spots were light in color, but the pink strip down it's side was really vivid.

I heard that someone had caught a brown trout out of the river and I think there was a picture of it up in Ebners bait shop for awhile, but a rainbow?

Incidently, a little later, I had on a little white feather jig, got a hard hit and landed a huge catfish on my little ultralite, probably in the 8-10 pound range...what a fight! smile.gif

Grebe,

Never knew the sippi river had trout in it. Now that's really frickin' weird!

Cal...I knew the river had the occassional brown trout, Ebners had a picture of one that some guy caught out of the river and I know of one that was caught out of Rice creek, just up from the mouth, but a Rainbow?

Maybe anything below Coon Rapids dam might have leaked out of little lake Cenaiko, but above it?

Both my brother and I each caught a brook trout out of the Knife river up at Mora, years ago when they still had the old dam there.

Hey, aside from being really light in color, this fish was healthy as could be and put up a spirited tussle on the little ultralite!

I don't know where they would come from, one would think the water would be to warm and turbid? They may be few and far between, but the occassional trout definately make a living in the mighty Miss!

You know, come to think of it, years back, I caught a brook trout below St. Anthony dam also, nice one.

I bet those trout are caught by some jokers in the cenaiko trout lake and dumped into the river..

as for catfish in Minnetonka, they dont show them in the survey, but I saw a pic of a huge flathead someone claimed they got out of there, so maybe I am wrong?

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?
    • LakeofthewoodsMN
On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
