hey everyone I'm kinda new to the area of redwood falls. I was wondering what are some great places for walleye and northern/muskie fishing around here?...I've been to school grove and haven't had any lucky with walleyes mostly bullheads and one tiny walleye...thanks a bunch!

Welcome to Fishing Minnesota. I cannot help you with the lakes around the New Ulm area as I dont fish there. I'm sure someone will chime in and give you some direction.

There's a fine group of people here so, if you have any further questions, just fire away.

We also have a get Fishing Minnesota get together next Saturday and please feel welcome to attend. You can see the post towards the top of the forum and if you need a boat ride, just post it there and someone may have extra room.

This get together is just a fun day of fishing and a picnic so, dont feel that you are attending some big tourny.

We hope you can make it. Its a good way to learn a new lake, some techniques and meet some fellow FMers.

Welcome to FishingMinnesota. I'm not too hip on the Redwood area. I mostly fish the Avoca/Slayton/Currie/Hadley area. I'll ask around some of my pals and hopefully get you some info.

June 9 is the Prairie Polebender FM get together. If you have the opportunity come on out. I'm thinkin it's going to be a heckuva good time.

If you fish from shore try the Minnesoa river. If you have a boat try Hanska, or go to Willmar area. I try school grove and ladyslipper they both are hit and miss walleye are there but finding them is tough at times.

I grew up in Wabasso and the Redwood Falls area is a tough place for fishing. Redwood County is one of the few in MN without a lake. The Minnesota River is your best local bet for walleye fishing. As one of the other posters noted, heading north to the Wilmar/Spicer area is probably your closest area for fishing. You aren't going to find much within a 30 minute drive though. Tough location.

I grew up in Wabasso too and still live in the area. One drawback of the area is the lack of fishing places. Head north or southwest if you want good action.

However, don't forget to try the Redwood River if the water level is up. Go towards Seaforth. I have seen 4 lb+ walleyes within the last 2 years. Not the norm, but if you want to kill an evening after work give it a shot.

Now if you duck hunt, then this area has got you covered.

I don't understand how all you so called locals can overlook the cottonwood river by Lamberton or Sanborn!! Small river with a great walleye population and enuff smallmouths to keep ya busy too.. I grew up in Sanborn and my biggest eye ( this includes 4 trips to Canada mind you) came out of that river just shy of 11 pounds.. PLUS I personally have seen bigger ones caught..Don't knock redwood county 4 lack of lakes when theres plenty of fish to be had IF ya wanna look a little but!!

Bassmasher, with all the wind we've had lately, I'm prone to try a small river like the one you mentioned. I suppose the only places to fish the Cottonwood would be where the road crosses over the river. Would this be a good time of the year? I'm not accustommed to river fishing. Do you have any tips? What lures would be best for eyes and smallies? Thanks for any info you can share.

hey X-T.. I guess alot of places that I fished were near roads that ran parallel or across the river now that you mention it..I udes to live in sanborn and had my honeyholes of course, if ya wanna try it down that way i can give ya a few places..If I still lived there I'd just take ya..lol..one spot in particularis the Golf course down there.. theres an old railroad tie dam there that crosses the river..if the river is up a bit you can try both below and above the dam.. if its low dont bother below just hit above the dam.. I am partial to crankbaits on the river.. My fav was ans will always be ( I cant find these anymore so if you know where to find a few lemme know!!) a manns 5+ in perch color.. above the dam its about 8-9 feet deep with big rocks everywhere and the eyes and smallies hide in the rocks .. If you walk just upstream (on shore) of the dam theres a big bend in the river.. thats my fav spot..shallow rocks and it drops off quick!!..this place is especially good in the fall fishing bigger minnows too.. you can e-mail me if ya like and I can give you a plethora of info I cant here :-).. heck maybe I should just drive back down there and fish it for a day!!.. Bassmasher thanks a lot for the info. I actually lived in Sanborn once a little over 30 years ago. I lived there for 9 months and worked at Central Publications.

If you decide to head over there some day, give me a holler. You can drive to Marshall and I'll take it from there. You can be my guide.

Mike as in Mike Hoffmann?? i remember a guy by that name that used to work At CP with Beech Roberts..I worked there myself for a little while after you left.. lol.. may have to take ya up on the trip to sanborn someday too.

Actually, my last name is Osmond. However, I do remember Beech. If I recall right, Donna Roberts was the secretary? She was a gorgeous lady. I was really saddened when I heard, many years ago, that cancer took her life.

I used to spend most of my time in the darkroom, At times, I would have to assist in taking the papers off the press, as they were printed.

BTW I'm self employed, so available 24/7.

that sounds like a great river too...I might actually have to head down there one of these days and give it a try...but to change subject a little bit..Mike I was wondering what you work as for self employment..I've tried all those self employed home jobs and none have worked yet..could you help a fellow out...sorry to change subject...but other than that it sounds like I'm gonna hit up this cottonwood river soon..thanks!

Shannon, where are you from? I work for a reseller of Mastercard and Visa merchant accounts. You don't want to take this road. It took close to 3 years to build it up to a liveable income. I have it pretty nice now. I service a resort association in addition to bars and restaurants and everything in between. I still need to pick up a few accounts now and then but basically I live off my residuals. Of course, customer service never ends.

so I went down to cottonwood river tonight by lamberton...I first started out using a jig and only caught those pesky bullheads...so I switched to a crankbait and it was about 5 casts later and I landed myself a 6 pound walleye..thanks for letting me know about this river..its a new favorite of mine

I have never fished it in the fall? Do u use the same techniquesand lures as in spring? I have been getting some nice ones on twisters lately, even 1 sauger which really surprised me

in the fall you can catch fish the same way but the bigger fish take a different technique..Theres more saugers in there than you may think also!! lol

I live in Redwood falls and there are lots of places to fish but they are rivers or small well guarded farm ponds and you have to put in your time if you are going to learn spots to fish the closer lakes in the area are hit and miss but when the fish are on the bite they are normaly very nice fish. I dont get down to the cotton wood river at all but both the minnesota river and the Redwood River can be very good at times and look for what they call lake Redwood to be getting better after they dredge the entire thing next summer

if you stay on the west side of the river. Thats the better side 4 fishing in my opinion anyway, you are ok..Jocko the club manager has it posted as no tresspassing but its just for insurence purposes.. or maybe he was just nice enuff to let me fish there.. lol
