Not a late day for me either. Do you have room Cheffery? Or I can use mine but weather permitting. I only have a 16'.

Hey Cheffrey,

I still want to get out on the big lake with you sometime this summer. Whether it is an event like this or just a last minute trip you have planned where there is an empty seat. Shoot me an email sometime when you are heading out and want someone to split gas money and bring the beer. My email is [email protected].

LoonASea and Wade. You’re more than welcome on my boat. I’ll probably be coming back fairly early, 1-2pm. If that’s OK let me know. I might have another friend that will be riding with but I think there will be plenty of room. If we fish Wisc. with four we might be a line short, but I don’t think that would be a big issue. Eleven lines is about max for me.

I may or may not make it. We might be headed to the woods to plant some food plots. If I do make it I would have room in my boat. I should know by this weekend if I can make it or not.

And Cheffrey you should find her for Porter I can't be doing those things these days!!!

Marshall, you have to make it. No choice. They way I see it if you are back on the dock by 2, in the woods by 3 that will give you 5+ hours of plot time.

Hey Cheffrey that would work if my land was 5 hours closer. If we do food plots that weekend I will be gone all weekend.

Guess I am out again this year. Moderation, thank you for the invite but I will have to decline. I am "on call" that weekend and do not want to ruin anyones trip because I need to get back to the landing to go on a service call. This is two years in a row now. I am beginning to think Northlander schedules these dates on purpose because he is afraid of being outfished. wink.gif

I'm booked guiding photo excursions that weekend, so I'm out.

Too bad, too. I actually have an LS-worthy rig I was going to trailer down there. Well, I need to make money more than I need to spend it, so I'll be working.

Have fun, you guys. grin.gif

I won't be able to make it as I'll be in the Black Hills on vacation with the family. I'm hoping to land a few trout out there on the fly rod, but imagine they'll be a bit smaller than the fish on the big lake!!! grin.gif

If I can be gone on a fishing trip during Mother's Day then Father's Day is a given.

Still taking care of some minor details on the boat but it should be ready.

Let's figure out the times we will meet in the morning and what time everyone would like to get together to grill. I plan on being on the water as soon as I can see my way through the Cheesy entry. BC

Last weekend (in the fog) i was on the water by 4am, and had poles setup by 5am (my boat isn't all that fast...50 HP / 28MPH...so takes me awhile to get out on the lake)...

I plan on pulling that same string...since I get off work around 330 anyways... It's starting to get daylight out by then (enough to see with anyways)

Sounds like some guys have to be back in early so lets grill at noon. Park Point?

Might be better to not have to go through all the traffic

with it being Grandma's weekend and all the out of town people visiting that area, even on Sun. Rices or loonsfoot might be better.

Moderation, good point abut traffic and Grandmas. Rice's Point would be better.

Fishing has been very good on the cheesey side and from what I hear the Gopher side has been ok as well. Those going out on the MN. side have Rices as the best landing and the Cheesey people have Loonsfoot wich is the best landing in the whole area.

As far as grilling everyone could meet at the sandy beach coming into the Wi. piers. Its to the right and everyone could beach their boats. Its nice and out of the wind and you can swim or whatever you want.

As said earlier Park Point/Canal Park will be crazy.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭
    • Rick G
Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
