Walleye & Sauger around GF

2 posts in this topic

Hello

wondering if anybody ever catches walleye out of the Red river around Grand Forks. I now they are in there, I just dont have a clue as to how to start fishing eyes on a river. I have heard of people catching them by the dams from shore, just wondering if anybody goes out after them in a boat.

Yep, definitely walleye in G.F.- that's the good news. The bad news is that they're really tough to target outside of their Spring and Fall run. You have pretty much missed the Spring run now. Very tough to hunt them for the next few months, but it is doable. Some people stumble into a good walleye bite now and then throughout the summer. However, it tends to be very "here today, gone tomorrow".

How big are the hooks you're using, wookie?   Make sure they're big enough, especially if you're using big minnows.    I also use heavier line than most people (10 lb flouro) on our rattle reels so I can set the hook with a bit of gusto without worrying about breaking off.  I might get a few less bites than my friends using 4 lb or 6 lb test, but in the long run I bet we both get the same number of fish on the ice.

Lighten up Francis!  LOL!  It was a blanket statement.  We see it all the time.     If you wanna get away from Sillytown, keep on fishin!

I have read that mercury levels are a reason there is no commercial harvest on vermilion. But it was probably the same thing you read as I have not found a second source of that. There is commercial harvest of rustys on other Minnesota lakes so there must be a reason it's not done here.    For or what it's worth, the DNR has suggestions on how much fish to eat because of mercury.
