Members Only Fluid Forum View   08/08/2017

Fluid forum view allows members only to get right to the meat of this community; the topics. You can toggle between your preferred forum view just below to the left on the main forum entrance. You will see three icons. Try them out and see what you prefer.   Fluid view allows you, if you are a signed up member, to see the newest topic posts in either all forums (select none or all) or in just your favorite forums (select the ones you want to see when you come to Fishing Minnesota). It keeps and in real time with respect to Topic posts and lets YOU SELECT YOUR FAVORITE FORUMS. It can make things fun and easy. This is especially true for less experienced visitors raised on social media. If you, as a members want more specific topics, you can even select a single forum to view. Let us take a look at fluid view in action. We will then break it down and explain how it works in more detail.   The video shows the topic list and the forum filter box. As you can see, it is easy to change the topic list by changing the selected forums. This view replaces the traditional list of categories and forums.   Of course, members only can change the view to better suit your way of browsing.   You will notice a “grid” option. We have moved the grid forum theme setting into the main forum settings. This makes it an option for members only to choose. This screenshot also shows the removal of the forum breadcrumb in fluid view mode. Fluid view remembers your last forum selection so you don’t lose your place when you go back to the listing. The benefit of this feature is easy to see. It removes a potential barrier of entry for members only. It puts the spotlight on topics themselves, and not the hierarchical forum structure. You as a member will enjoy viewing many forums at once and switching between them without leaving the page. We hope that fluid view, the new functionality is an asset that you enjoy .

Good morning all,

I have a couple questions about Burntside Lake and the BWCA lakes northwest of there.

First, are there any public campsites on Burntside on the western or southwestern part of the lake? Some friends and I are going to be heading into the BWCA through the portage to Crab Lake, and thought that a campsite on Burntside might be a nice place to stay on our last night (on our way out).

Second, can any of you give me any info about the fishing on lakes such as Crab and Cummings? I have looked at the info on the DNR website, but most of the reports are quite old. Any new, more updated info would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

I don't think there are campsites on the west end. There are a couple of nice island sites on the north arm though. The lakes back in the Crab and Cummings area are going to be mostly Smallies and Pike. It is a nice area and pretty quiet for the "modern BWCA". Oh yeah, the Crab Lake portage is a bit of a jaunt and it has moved to the west side of the point a few years ago so make sure you have an updated map.

The map I have shows the portage coming in on the south eastern lobe of the lake...does this sound right?

From what I gathered from the DNR, I figured the fishing was smallies and pike, no walleyes. Do you know if the fishing on these lakes is generally pretty good?

Also, since this is our first trip to the BWCA, I am a bit unfamiliar with some of the map terms used, especially one of them. Portage distances are listed in rods...how far is one rod?

A rod is 16' or one canoe length. (translation - Crab Lake Portage = long ) laugh.gif The portage on B-side is the one that was changed. It is around a little point on the west side of the peninsula from where it was. There is a little sign that says "Crab Lake Portage". The fishing can be good for smallies and mostly smaller pike. I think it's a good trip if you looking for solitude.

The only campsite that would be kind of on your way back to the Van Vac landing is the one in the bay where Crab Creek flows into Burntside. Others are in School section bay, two just past north arm narrows (heading north), and one in the short cut portage bay. These would take you away from the landing, but if you didn't care, should be available if coming out on a Sunday thru Thursday.

TPro, as I have made the trip many times by Canoe, I would suggest you launch from the Slim Lk. Portage ( North Arm Public access, Must Park after the unload ). There are a couple of sites between Crab Portage & North Arm both USFS & Natl Forest land to camp. IMHOP North Arm is the way to paddle, otherwise those islands can get tricky in mid-lake. I guess what Im saying is that North Arm is easier to navagate than the VV to Crab Portage ( anyone agree?? ).

Use the search to find more fishing info. on this route. Much has been said if you adjust the search peramiters to, like, 3 years...Really!

Thanks for all the help! I guess we still have a bit of homework to do before the trip. We still have three weeks before we go, so we should be able to hammer things out before then.

Unless I missed it in the other posts, any info on Cummings Lake?

Helluva smallie lake, that cummings. Nice campsites. Rely on others & the search feature to locate 'eyes on the Crab Kk. route, as Cummings is certianly not the only destenation Lake.. laugh.gif

Good Luck!

It's a far shorter paddle to the Van Vac landing than the North Arm landing, from Crab Lake Portage,or Crab Creek.

With 2 trout stamps you can keep double your limit. You heard it here first on the interwebs!  Me and Mr Williams will swing by and say Hi this winter in Ely.   That is, if we can get around your sled!!  Happy Thanksgiving!

There is probably not going to be much ice to speak of  if the forecast holds true. They are talking 50s on Friday, Sunday and Monday. Any ice we did have will most likely be gone, unfortunately.

Haven't been out looking but things have been froze up for awhile. Heard there was some out on Bowstring last week.

Saw something interesting on forest lake this morning...lake was completely locked up, yet someone had launched their boat and was trudging through the ice! That’s dedication! Anyone have any ice updates to report?

2 Trout stamps.  Did I miss something and need to go back and get another?

The 200 foot rule gets me a little but it has to be defined somehow what is occupied and what isn’t.   So for a wheelhouse we get to buy tabs to have on the road and a sticker to have it on the ice and go away for a little while.  Seems pretty close to double taxation since any LE can find out who the owner is from the current plate. Plus the spear shack that I might want to keep up over the weekend.  2 tags plus license. Combination sports license 2 trout stamps Waterfowl stamps Pheasant stamp  Turkey license (stamp now included) Deer license for all seasons   The bucket is getting heavy with all the drops in it.
