As far as I know, nothing has changed over the past several months.

I drive by this res every morning. About once or twice a week the same guy is out with a canoe, he parks at the WMA parking lot and lauches the canoe down the creek. I haven't talked to him to see how he is doing, but he has been out atleast 6 times already this year I would guess. So something must be out there biting. As far as the legality of the whole thing, I am not really sure if I would be pushing it too much, I would just wait it out and see what happens. By going out there right now I think that it only gives all fishermen a bad reputation. Everyone knows about the whole controversy surrounding this res. I think that by going out there and fishing it right now, we are just giving the opponents something to complain about. Just my two cents.

I wasn't sure if we could use it or not. I've never fished there and wanted to give it a shot. I'll hold off until I hear something.

what's the controversy about on this place?? first I've heard of this , but then again I'm new to fishing around here

The water is SCR is public and that water can legally be accessed by the feeder creek on the SE side via canoe, ice, etc (however parking near the creek is impossible).

Some of the landowners (and township residents) around the res don’t want it open to public fishing. The water is surrounded by private land.

I don’t know all the facts in this case and some of the info above could be debated. I’m not trying to make a stand here, rather just answer a couple of your questions.

I’m staying off that body of water until this debate is settled (if ever). I would recommend others to do the same.

PLEASE, let's not start a big debate on here regarding this matter.

  • 6 months later...

Story in PB today says Haverhill Township will temporarily allow fishing dawn to dusk with the city providing a 30 space gravel parking lot. No fishing April or November due to pelicans and swans.

I drove by there yesterday and thought that it what was being made, a parking lot. I saw a few people out there.

I really hope this 'small' pond doesn't get fished out. This could be a good place for kids to get into and enjoy fishing as long people practice Catch and Release.

Is this place you guys are talking about located east of county road 11 not far north of Chester?

I saw that place on the map and drove by it on my one trip to Chester Woods last summer. I wondered why I had never seen it mentioned on here, and now I know why.

I couldn't agree more

I couldn't tell you from experience, but from what I've heard from folks who fished out there last winter and this summer its already pretty well fished out. Probably be low on my list on places to fish this year. There's lots of places to catch fish out there guys. If you want to be able to go out and catch fish invest $10 in a UPLR event. There is a ton of knowledge being shared out there and you're almost guaranteed to be a better fisherperson afterwards.

Man how true this is. I always keep a wandering eye out to where people setup and even sometimes catch a glimpse of what people are using. Often times the winners will simply say I was fishing over there (while pointing) and basically explain exactly what they were using if asked. There's always talk about what worked best, and times, and where the active fish were in the water column.

Of course all this information is spilled after the event is over, but a person should be able to go out there next time with a mountain of useful information to apply.

Was out at Chester today for a few hours. I was the only person there all morning. Drove home and went by this reservoir and the parking lot was overflowing. Probably 15-20 vehicles. Don't blame them as I am looking forward to fishing a new body of water. Hopefully people will spread back out after they have fished it a couple of times.

This body of water will be abused all winter!! Then come next year people will be pissin and moanin' about all the little fish that are being caught. They needed to placesome special reg's or have C & R only out there.

Maybe getting it fished out is the master plan of the governing boards. Then no one will fish there and the parking, neighborhood issues will go away.

I was thinking the exact same thing.

This may not be the brightest question I've ever had. But, is it even possible to "fish out" a body of water as big as Silver Creek?

I remember hearing people say how Red was getting "fished out." Just the other day I saw a report in the ice fishing forum of some guys that caught 5-6 pigs!

Considering how little pressure Silver Creek gets during the open water months I just can't picture it getting "fished out" even a possibility.

Can anyone shed some light on this?

Thanks

Rebeleye

Rebeleye, to answer your question, No you won't fish out Silver Creek. What you will do is take most the keeper size fish out of the system. Perfect example, KR7, not the same size, but you could go there before they put in the parking lot and catch a bunch of good sized crappie and sunnies. Now, you would be lucky to catch a decent sized fish. You will be looking at the same thing. The problem with high fishing pressure on a small resivoir here is there is nothing to replenish the resource. You can mark it down. Silver Creek will be in the same situation as KR7

Thanks Chris,

That makes sense. It's rather unfortunate that these small lakes get taken advantage the way they do.

I guess when something is open to the public and doesn't have regs put on it, something like this is bound to happen...

Who would put a special regulation on one of these reservoirs? I would think that all reservoirs around Rochester could use some special regulations. From keeper size to smaller limits. It seems to help at Chester Woods. Personally I am coming to the conclusion that fishing in Rochester = catch and release. And when I head north is when I keep some fish.

We live in the land of 10,000 lakes (actually there are over 15,000), but the southeast part of the state is starved for it's share of them.

On the occasion that I get over to the Faribault area, Mankato, or up by Willmar, I am envious of all the different fishing holes the folks around there have available to them close to home.

With the number of fishermen in the Rochester area, I'd say that special regs on the few small bodies of water in the vicinity would be a great idea to keep the numbers of keeper-size fish up a bit. I practice careful handling and C&R at all times. I haven't kept a fish in a long time.

The best thing I can say is to spread the word as best as we all can, without being jerks about it, which can be difficult for me seing some people taking limit after limit out of some small lakes. I can't blame people for taking some fish, but be responsible.

I have looked at the forums on this site a few times in the last 3 years to get some ice fishing tips from the experts. I had to join the website just to post on this thread. I agree 110% percent on everything that has been said. KR7 use to be a great place to go on a Sunday afternoon and catch some decent sized fish. Perch, Crappie and Sunfish. I always have a camera to take a picture of the nice ones. Then back down the hole they go. And then on the way home I stop by Ye Old Butcher Shop for a nice Ribeye. I loved going to Silver Creek but I think I will stay away this year. Cant stand to see the same thing happen to it. I believe all of the ponds in this area need to have some regulations put on them. What took nature years to do can be ruined by a parking lot in 1 winter.

I'm not there, so I can't tell exactly what's going on but it looks like a large area of open water developed in the last day with all of the heavy snow on the east side of wake em up Narrows. These two photos are from my Ring Camera facing north towards Niles Point.  You can see what happened with all of snow that fell in the last three days, though the open water could have been wind driven. Hard to say. .

Black Bay had great ice before but a few spots near rockpiles where there were spots of open water. It looks like the weight of the snow has created a little lake in the middle of the bay.

On the south end...   Thanks to some cold spring weather, ice fishing continues strong for those still ice fishing.  The bite remains very good.  Most resorts have pulled their fish houses off for the year, however, some still have fish houses out and others are allowing ATV and side by sides.  Check social media or call ahead to your favorite resort for specifics. Reports this week for walleyes and saugers remain excellent.   A nice mix of jumbo perch, pike, eelpout, and an occasional crappie, tullibee or sturgeon being reported by anglers. Jigging one line and using a live minnow on the second line is the way to go.  Green, glow red, pink and gold were good colors this week.     Monster pike are on a tear!  Good number of pike, some reaching over 45 inches long, being caught using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring in 8 - 14' of water.   As always, work through a resort or outfitter for ice road conditions.  Safety first always. Fish houses are allowed on the ice through March 31st, the walleye / sauger season goes through April 14th and the pike season never ends. On the Rainy River...  The river is opened up along the Nelson Park boat ramp in Birchdale, the Frontier boat ramp and Vidas boat ramp.  This past week, much of the open water skimmed over with the single digit overnight temps.   Areas of the river have popped open again and with temps getting warmer, things are shaping up for the last stretch through the rest of the spring season, which continues through April 14th.   Very good numbers of walleyes are in the river.  Reports this week, even with fewer anglers, have been good.  When temps warm up and the sun shines, things will fire up again.   Jigs with brightly colored plastics or jigs with a frozen emerald shiner have been the desired bait on the river.  Don't overlook slow trolling crankbaits upstream as well.   Good reports of sturgeon being caught on the river as well.  Sturgeon put the feed bag on in the spring.  The bite has been very good.  Most are using a sturgeon rig with a circle hook loaded with crawlers or crawlers / frozen emerald shiners. Up at the NW Angle...  Ice fishing is winding down up at the Angle.  Walleyes, saugers, and a number of various species in the mix again this week.  The bite is still very good with good numbers of fish.  The one two punch of jigging one line and deadsticking the second line is working well.   Check with Angle resorts on transport options from Young's Bay.  Call ahead for ice road guidelines.

With the drifting, kind of hard to tell for sure, but I'm guessing about a foot and still lightly snowing. Cook end!

How much snow did you get on Vermilion?
    • Mike89
lake here refroze too...  started opening again yesterday with the wet snow and wind...  very little ice left today...
    • Hookmaster
A friend who has a cabin between Alex and Fergus said the lake he's on refroze. He texted me a pic from March 12th when it was open and one from 23rd when it wasn't. 🤯
    • SkunkedAgain
I don't think that there has been any ice melt in the past few weeks on Vermilion. Things looked like a record and then Mother Nature swept in again.   I'll give my revised guess of April 21st

As I get older it's really not just about sending bullets down range.  Some of it's just the workmanship of the gun and the wow factor. The other two guns I have really wanted which I'll never have now because of their price, is a 8mm Jap Nambu and 9mm German Luger.   Just thought they always looked cool!

I had a guy hit me with a lightly used 1969 BAR, he wanted $1650 with an older Leupold scope. More than I think they are worth, I made an offer, he declined end of story.   You know if you look at the old brochures, a grade II BAR sold for $250 in the late 60s, $1650 would be a good return on your investment.    Why would anybody want a 50 year old gun, they are heavy, have wood stocks, and blued metal.  I guess mainly to keep their gun safes glued to the floor. lol   You can probably buy a stainless rifle that you never have to clean, with a synthetic stock you never have to refinish, is as light as a feather, and for half as much money, perfect.   I'm too old for a youth gun, although I've shrunk enough that it would probably fit. lol   No Ruger 10/44s.   Jim
