I found about a pound of small greys a couple of nights ago, fried'em in butter a had them over a sirloin. A little more rain and they should really pop.

I was out scouting last night for turkeys and checked around a couple elms but maybe I was checking too close to the stump and I need to branch out alittle? Some clues would be great, Thanks!

I was looking around some more dead elm trees today. It seems to be better if the soil is rich and black with that green fuzzy moss growing around the area. Not only are the shrooms out but the woodticks are thick!

Next week should be real good! grin.gif

I should be catching these soon...

I do say, you be on the lucky side there Dark. Went out last saterday and found only 8 small grays. Dryer than a popcorn fart down this way. But things should trun around this weekend. We got RAIN laugh.gif And no it's not the Monkey! He's a shroom hunting fool. He took too shrooming a lot faster than fishing. Heading up that way some time about mid may, last weekend of may for sure....

Hey Mr. Dark, I have a question for you about morels although I've been told you are lacking. Or is that morals??

Anyhow, today I found a whole pot full of them that are an inch or less tall that I left to grow more. How long will it take for them to grow to eating size? My son's girlfriend asked me where they were and I told her that I could tell her but then I'd have to kill her. Also, what do you fry them in?

Dark, thanks for the reply. I'll hit them at dawn tomorrow. I was told that I don't have to leave any for reseeding because by the time I find them, they have already sent out their spores. Is that correct? I found a couple of trees that I was afraid to walk under today for fear of stepping on the morels. A couple places they were bunched like grapes. I had never seen that before. Is that common? That was a good video. I never knew that you had to be quiet and sneak up on them. grin.gif

Sounds like you could use some help picking those wink.gif

I took a walk on Sat and looked for about 5 minutes and then out of nowhere, downpour of tropical rainforest proportions. My hunt ended.

I'll try again this week if I can break away from fishing.

dtro, It's easy to find that bunch. Just go to the far side of the pond, turn left past the gully and go halfway up the hill. You can't miss them. They're all over the place. I hope this helps.

Update on the mushrooms. I went back to the honey hole this morning and an elf was there. He told me that these were his magic mushrooms and if I left them alone, he would use his elfin magic to make Paris Hilton fall in love with me. I drop-kicked that sucker clean into next week and gathered all the mushrooms. Now if he had promised me Katherine Heigal-----.

On the downside,my trashbag fills up a lot quicker than my mushroom bag. I thought I had that area cleaned up last summer and its trashed again. How many of you gatherers collect trash when you go mushrooming? To me it seems like I,m paying back the woodland for the mushrooms.

found 37 grays on the south side of some hills and a couple yellows that surprisingly shouldn't have been where they were today, out in the wide open with nothing around them!

I'm starting to think this is one of those "snipe hunt" things grin.gif

Was out for a few hours tonight with no luck. Got rained on......again mad.gif

As a last ditch effort to get a tip or two I even phoned Master Dark but he wasn't home at the time.

I am in the same boat as you are Dtro. I looked a number of times last year, and already a few times this year all throughout the South Metro area. Not a single one. The "snipe hunt" thought actually crossed my mind too! Ive looked high and low, south side, north side. Ive seen what I am pretty sure are dozens of dead or dying elms, and yet not a Morel to be found. Exactly how close to the dying Elms are they typically found. I am about this close to giving this up forever! If any of you Morel hunters don't mind bring a newbie along with you sometime, I probably will have some free time Wed. and Thursday. I dont want anyone's hot spot, but somewhere I can be shown the ropes of Morel hunting. I believe my email address is in my profile. Help!

The first one of the season is always the hardest, you need to train your eyes to see them little buggers. They can blend in good. Then after you find one keep looking in that area, once you find one there is bound to be more. Good luck!

I looked again in the South Metro, still no morels. I found dead elms, everything that is supposed to be there. Still no morels. Im going to give it a try tommorrow in the late morning or early afternoon if anyone wants to show me the ropes or tag along. Im headed up to Lake Vermilion for 10 days of walleye fishing, at least I know I can find those. I really wanted to try some fried up morels to go with the fresh fish though!

I went out this morning after I got off the night shift. I filled a couple of big bags of yellows. My neighbors see me coming with mushrooms and pretend they're not home. My kids say they don't know me. I've been calling people randomly from the phone book to give them away and no takers. I called a co-worker whose wife is named Yoko, the girl who broke up the Beatles, and she only took a gallon of them. What do I do with the extras?? I've never had a season like this before. Where the city of Minnetonka took down some Elms, I was afraid to kneel down to pick some because I was crushing others. This is a good thing, right????

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?
    • LakeofthewoodsMN
On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭
    • Rick G
Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
