Long Lake in New Brighton

3 posts in this topic

I need a close by lake (st. paul area) to waste a few hours on on saturday. How is the crappie fishing on long lake? Sunnies? I also see on the lake finder that catfish had found their way into the lake from the mississippi, have their numbers grown since then or is it still just a few stragglers? Any info on the lake would be nice. Thanks in advance.

There's quite a few kinds of fish to catch on Long Lake. My buddies usually have better luck than me...I usually catch bullheads.

I haven't fished the lake for about a year now but back then...we'd fish for crappies by the boat launch and everything else around the pier. Decent amount of eyes, northerns, and carp. I tried for cats multiple times....but...still manage to only pull big bullies. I remember there were many nights where the fish would be very, very active....below and ontop of the water. You can't fish after dark but there are many regulars that I've met and fished with that does. The police drives by multiple times a night and won't bother you for staying past the closing time. So, what was YOUR ice show score of the day!? I'm heading down on Sunday to see what scraps I can dig up. Absolutely more excited than I should be considering the only ice I've seen so far is the kind that fits in a glass..

Seeing it's only your second year find buddy to go with as rock said. I even bring a second set of dry clothes and footwear. I am to big mess with thin ice I need 6 inches as rick said early varies so much so some where there is half as much ice.    Safety gear check include ice cleats as i have seen enough broken arms happen. Check your gear test the vexilar hook it up and turn it on to see if it runs or just hook up the charger. I use the drill plate so I charge all my batteries and with blade protecter on I make sure it works. My little sled is ready to haul my gear.    I go light during early ice so fill so fill up my plactics container and restock my jig boxes. Make sure my set ups have new line and pick my favorite set ups to take with. I can add some photos later
