Anyone fishing Walleye Opener on Spirit Lake/ Okaboji this weekend?

5 posts in this topic

Is anyone going to fish Spirit Lake this weekend for the opener? I plan on fishing Sat and Sun. Hopefully if it isn't a rain out! Fishing is usually great! I plan on drifting lindy rigs and jig and minnow near stoney point on Spirit Lake.

I'll be there. We'll be drifting crawlers, leaches, or minnows, or we'll be trolling cranks shallow or with leadcore out in the deep, or we'll be fishing below a lighted bobber at night near one of the shorelines. We might even do a little vertical jigging, tho the wind doesn't sound like that's going to be a possibility.

Guess we'll fish however the fish want us to. grin.gif

Good luck everyone!

I'll be in a blue Alumacraft Navigator with a 60 Yamaha. Give me a shout. Weather sounds like it is going to suck all weekend. Have you ever fished below the spillway on East Okaboji?

Agreed.  One thing that drew me too lakers was their mysterious nature and the places they live.  Kind of a sacred type of fish.   I also agree the DNR will basically ignore any additional specialized management until an organized group starts advocating for lakers.  There just hasn't been a large enough following up till the past few years like you mentioned.   So, what's next?  It seems like laker fans are here to stay.

How are folks dealing with this warm weather spell? Are you still fishing even though the temps are well above freezing? At what point is ice deemed unsafe?

Well it looks like Recycled Fish is under new leadership! I talked to them and they say that they will have the shirts back for the 2017/2018 fishing season

That's what I have been reading after more research I will probably replace my thermal with one when the time comes but for now I am looking for a smaller lighter house I can use when by myself. Better than canvas craft is saying something!
