How much do you feed your dog? (additional health info)

The arthritis thread had me thinking about keeping a dog lean (I personally always have), but others I know leave the feeding up to the dog and just keep a bowl of food available for them all the time. I feed a specific amount, two times a day to keep my dog lean.

I recently read (on another forum) of a study on the affects of lower calorie diets on dogs. Since we can't provide links, here is the report:

Dogs Lived 1.8 Years Longer On Low Calorie Diet: Gut Flora May Explain It

Science Daily — Changes caused to bugs in the gut by restricting calorie intake may partly explain why dietary restriction can extend lifespan, according to new analysis from a life-long project looking at the effects of dietary restriction on Labrador Retriever dogs.

Bugs in the gut are known as gut microbes and they live symbiotically in human and animal bodies, playing an important role in metabolism. Abnormalities in some types of gut microbes have recently been linked to diseases such as diabetes and obesity.

Today's research, published in the Journal of Proteome Research, was based on a study in which 24 dogs were paired, with one dog in each pair given 25% less food than the other. Those with a restricted intake of calories lived, on average, about 1.8 years longer than those with a greater intake and they had fewer problems with diseases such as diabetes and osteoarthritis, plus an older median age for onset of late-life diseases.

The researchers, from Imperial College London, Nestlé Research Center (NRC) and Nestlé-Purina, found long-term differences in the metabolism of the dietary-restricted and non-dietary-restricted dogs. Metabolic profile plays a key role in determining animals' response to illness and their susceptibility to disease.

The scientists believe that differences in the makeup of gut microbes between the two sets of dogs could partly explain their metabolic differences. The dogs that were not on a restricted diet had increased levels of potentially unhealthy aliphatic amines in their urine. These reflect reduced levels of a nutrient that is essential for metabolising fat, known as choline, indicating the presence of a certain makeup of gut microbe in the dogs. This makeup of gut microbes has been associated in recent studies with the development of insulin resistance and obesity.

Professor Jeremy Nicholson from Imperial College London said: "This fascinating study was primarily focused on trying to find optimised nutritional regimes to keep pet animals such as dogs healthy and as long-lived as possible. However these types of life-long studies can help us understand human diseases and ageing as well, and that is the added bonus of being able to do long-term non-invasive metabolic monitoring."

The researchers suggest that part of the healthier metabolic profiles of dogs on a restricted diet is related to their changed gut microbial activity, which in turn contributes to their generally improved health and longer lifespan. However, they also found that the overall effects of ageing on restricted and non-restricted animals exerted a greater effect on the metabolic profile than dietary restriction. This in itself is interesting as the lifelong metabolic trajectories of large animals had never been studied in this detail before and such information might be of relevance to ageing humans and their diseases. The team believes that one important outcome of this work will be the ability to improve the design of products' nutritional properties that mimic the health benefits of dietary restriction in pet dogs.

I feed my dog exactly what the bag specifies, 60lbs 3 1/2 cups.

I also follow the guidelines on the side of the Bag. Have always used Science Diet and last 2 dogs live to almost 13 and 14+. Never had an issue with overweight dogs. Too bad they don't have feeding guideline for me wink.gifgrin.giflaugh.gif

I always leave the bowl full for my dogs. They have never been considered obese. Late winter, they will get a little extra weight on them, but not much. Also just after hunting season they will be a little thin, but not much. They are still younger dogs, and I may have to change the feeding allotment in the future, but right now it seems O.K.

A friends dog gets only his recommended dog food a day, and is a chubby dog. Problem isn't the dog food, but rather the table scraps!

      Contact the DNR if there are serious concerns.  Tournaments have to be permitted through them.  If they're not handling the fish correctly, they might lose their permit.

      A 6-mile section of the Glacial Lakes State Trail will be closed as contractors work on improvements, according to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources.
      Trail users will see intermittent closures until June 1 as workers remove trees and brush that are near the work area. The segment between the trailhead in Willmar and Spicer’s south side at Progress Way is scheduled to close on June 5 as workers begin mill and overlay work on the trail’s westernmost 6 miles. The project is scheduled for completion by Aug. 25. In addition to a smooth, new surface, trail users will enjoy new benches, improved accessibility, and paved crossings at gravel road intersections. The current 8-foot trail width will also be expanded to 10 feet. “We think our trail users will be pleased with these improvements,” said Jeremy Losinski, area supervisor for the DNR’s Parks and Trails Division. “The wider trail will provide easier passage. Plus, the smoother pavement replaces the trail’s oldest paved surface, which is now more than 20 years old. It had deteriorated and reached the end of its life cycle.” Contractors will also be replacing several culverts along the trail to provide better drainage. “While we want to make sure everyone is safe, there will still be opportunities to use parts of the trail during construction,” Losinski said. “The construction will start in Willmar and work its way toward Spicer, so small portions of the trail will have limited use. Our trail users may not be able to go all the way from Willmar to Spicer during times in the construction process. We just ask that our trail users obey the closure signs and avoid construction equipment.” Prinsburg-based Duininck, Inc., is the contractor. Construction updates will be posted on the DNR’s Glacial Lakes State Trail Web page. The 22-mile western segment of the Glacial Lakes State Trail links Willmar with the Kandiyohi/Stearns County line. The 5-mile eastern segment connects Roscoe to Cold Spring. Built on the former Burlington Northern railroad grade, a total of 27 miles is paved as the trail cuts across the border between Minnesota’s western tallgrass prairie and eastern deciduous forest.       The four I use are pretty shallow for at least the first hundred yards, but I've never damaged my boat or prop. Just gotta take it slow and trim the motor up.    I use Isle, Cove, Garrison, and the one near the casino, Shaboshkung or whatever.

      Greetings fishermen and women! Its great being back in the swing of things and better yet in the boat! Both the MN and Ontario season is now open and fishing has been great! Staffers here at Flag Island Resort have been busy getting ready for the upcoming summer months with some deep cleaning, window washing, grounds work and remodeling!   On the Minnesota side anglers have been catching nice saugers, walleyes and perch. Soon the crappies should be finding their way into the shallows around Angle Inlet and other small creeks and the walleyes have spawned out over the past couple of weeks. With the warmer temps that started out last week anglers were finding fish in shallower water between 5-17 feet now, with the cooler temps, rain and winds most of the fish have been pushed deeper into the 16-26 foot range. Points and reefs close to large land masses adjacent to sand and rubble have been hot locations. Anglers have found fish near Soldier’s, Little Oak, Oak Island and NW Point. The water surface temp has been in that 50-55 degree range. Right now it seems like everything is working from ¼ to 3/8 jigs to slow trolling with raps in the shallows as well as trolling spinners keeping on the move at 0.9 mph.   Over in Ontario, the walleye, sauger, crappie, perch and pike have been hungry. Perch and crappie should be spawning soon. Crappies are being caught around the 20 foot mark . Sandy bays and points have been best for the walleye and crappie bite while the perch are still caught in the rocks. Many pike have been caught in areas with current. There have been reports of a lot of smallmouth mixed in with the walleyes.  Jigging with a ¼-3/8 ounce jig has been the ticket and the water temp has been around 49-52 degrees.   We hope to see you up here soon!
