What do you mean off topic? First of all the title of the post is "Osakis" so that's pretty much open to anything. Second, BobT is talking about helping out the lake while you're talking about farting in your boat? Which is more off topic?

Thanks for the good information BobT. If you here anything further, let us know. Thanks

Yes, The title is Osakis, BUT, the question was pertaining to a fishing report. Not why the water is green or how to keep cows from peeing in the water. What's wrong with farting in a boat while fishing? I guess if I was farting in the water and causing it to turn green I'd be on topic then confused.gif Anyways, how has the "fishing" been on "Osakis" over the past week? grin.gif

Sounds like some mixed reports for the walleye bite. Heading up this weekend to give it a shot. I havent been up since this winter how are the water levels looking?

I guess another question is what bait has been the ticket, leeches, crawlers, minnows, or crank baits? Shallow or deep?

Any help would be nice. grin.gif

The only advice I have to offer is, bring beer, lots of it. You'll have plenty of time to drink it

I'm heading up this weekend and I have a quick question -

What have the water temps been lately? How about levels?

Thanks,

Last weekend I had 62 as the surface temp. Water is about the same as it was this time last year, down perhaps a foot or so from normal average levels. The recent rain may have brought it up several inches and the cool down will likely keep the temp around 60ish.

What recent rain? I live 6-8 miles from the lake, I've never clocked it. We've probably gotten 1" - 1 1/2" in the last three weeks. All the recent rain has been farther South for the most part. I haven't been on the lake yet myself this year, planning on going tonight for the first time, been fishing other places & going to a lot of Little League games...

Thanks Sportfish! 60's and rising ought to put centarchids in the shallows where I want 'em.

Well fishing was slow for us last weekend durning the morning and afternoon. Couldnt even get a bite, fishing was really tough with the winds all weekend. It's like an ocean out there some times. But we did get some nice eyes before dark trolling on Friday and Sunday. Didnt even go out Sat. night, too windy.

Adam, ditto that report. Got a couple of eyes with slip bobbers before and shortly after dark on Sunday night. Several below the protected size back in the lake but at least had some take downs.

Monday was like a gale and winds changed several times while I was out there. You'd just get some protection from the shore line and the wind would change 30 or 45 degrees and come at you from a different angle requiring a relocation to keep boat control. With the heavy rain in the AM and the wind all day it made for a pretty tough and fishless day.

Northern bite was excellent near the emerging pencil reeds. Size was mixed. Some good picklers and some decent filet northern. Nothing big thus far.

Bass bite was okay but I couldn't get a constant pattern on them yet. Just picked up an odd one here and there.

Trolling and wind drifting didn't produce much for me but my daughter did have several good hits on a her lindy but she's a bit inexperienced and was too eager to set the hook on the little short biters. I still have to figure out the right depth as 12-14ft seemed sporadic at best.

I'm not there, so I can't tell exactly what's going on but it looks like a large area of open water developed in the last day with all of the heavy snow on the east side of wake em up Narrows. These two photos are from my Ring Camera facing north towards Niles Point.  You can see what happened with all of snow that fell in the last three days, though the open water could have been wind driven. Hard to say. .

Black Bay had great ice before but a few spots near rockpiles where there were spots of open water. It looks like the weight of the snow has created a little lake in the middle of the bay.

On the south end...   Thanks to some cold spring weather, ice fishing continues strong for those still ice fishing.  The bite remains very good.  Most resorts have pulled their fish houses off for the year, however, some still have fish houses out and others are allowing ATV and side by sides.  Check social media or call ahead to your favorite resort for specifics. Reports this week for walleyes and saugers remain excellent.   A nice mix of jumbo perch, pike, eelpout, and an occasional crappie, tullibee or sturgeon being reported by anglers. Jigging one line and using a live minnow on the second line is the way to go.  Green, glow red, pink and gold were good colors this week.     Monster pike are on a tear!  Good number of pike, some reaching over 45 inches long, being caught using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring in 8 - 14' of water.   As always, work through a resort or outfitter for ice road conditions.  Safety first always. Fish houses are allowed on the ice through March 31st, the walleye / sauger season goes through April 14th and the pike season never ends. On the Rainy River...  The river is opened up along the Nelson Park boat ramp in Birchdale, the Frontier boat ramp and Vidas boat ramp.  This past week, much of the open water skimmed over with the single digit overnight temps.   Areas of the river have popped open again and with temps getting warmer, things are shaping up for the last stretch through the rest of the spring season, which continues through April 14th.   Very good numbers of walleyes are in the river.  Reports this week, even with fewer anglers, have been good.  When temps warm up and the sun shines, things will fire up again.   Jigs with brightly colored plastics or jigs with a frozen emerald shiner have been the desired bait on the river.  Don't overlook slow trolling crankbaits upstream as well.   Good reports of sturgeon being caught on the river as well.  Sturgeon put the feed bag on in the spring.  The bite has been very good.  Most are using a sturgeon rig with a circle hook loaded with crawlers or crawlers / frozen emerald shiners. Up at the NW Angle...  Ice fishing is winding down up at the Angle.  Walleyes, saugers, and a number of various species in the mix again this week.  The bite is still very good with good numbers of fish.  The one two punch of jigging one line and deadsticking the second line is working well.   Check with Angle resorts on transport options from Young's Bay.  Call ahead for ice road guidelines.

With the drifting, kind of hard to tell for sure, but I'm guessing about a foot and still lightly snowing. Cook end!

How much snow did you get on Vermilion?
    • Mike89
lake here refroze too...  started opening again yesterday with the wet snow and wind...  very little ice left today...
    • Hookmaster
A friend who has a cabin between Alex and Fergus said the lake he's on refroze. He texted me a pic from March 12th when it was open and one from 23rd when it wasn't. 🤯
    • SkunkedAgain
I don't think that there has been any ice melt in the past few weeks on Vermilion. Things looked like a record and then Mother Nature swept in again.   I'll give my revised guess of April 21st

As I get older it's really not just about sending bullets down range.  Some of it's just the workmanship of the gun and the wow factor. The other two guns I have really wanted which I'll never have now because of their price, is a 8mm Jap Nambu and 9mm German Luger.   Just thought they always looked cool!
