You may want to try Willson Marine on the Cook side, they have had them in the past for rent.

MinnowDangler71,

Wilsons is right down the road from me. They do rent pontoons. I do not know their rates or availability though. Hopefully we will have open water this weekend!

Ice is on the move. Our ice shifted to the north about 50' so I would have to guess that a majority of the ice will be gone by the weekend if the weather holds which it is suppose to. Greenwood Bay is open to Dodge Point and a little south breeze is doing its work. Look at the ducks.

This is looking north from the end of Bradley Road towards Fectos point and Blackduck Island. This was taken this morning and just got around to getting them uploaded

We are open here in Spring Bay but not clear to Piccard Island. I did walk down to the landing, and it is sill iced out beyond the general area of Head O Lakes Resort. Not sure where you are at, but by this weekend you should have a good shot at getting the dock in.

Doug,

Thanks for the info! I am on the south side of Jacobson's point near the end of the point by the two little islands. Hopefully our bays will be open and a clear path over to Black Bay! this is my first full year here as I just bought the cabin last August

Doug,

I have fished this lake for about 15 years now but always a week at a time in the summer so no I do not know how close "eye" am yet. I know Black bay is a good spring crappie spot. I'll buy you a couple beers at the Landing tonight if you fill me in smile.gif

The Eagle Eye cam shows that most of the ice has receded from Hibbing Point. There is a massive area of open water. It won't be long now!

Dan-

Would take you up on a cold one--- Diet Coke, except my son and I are on our way this evening to the north shore to fish the steel head run. Drop in sometime.

Our area is pretty much ice free and that ice that is still here is so rotten, a boat could drive right thru it. Absolutely no wind. If the wind would come up even a little, this stuff would be gone. Anyway, should be pretty well gone by the weekend.

Well its about time to let this thread die. Its getting to long. Frazer bay is 1/2 open There is some ice between Grubens and Moc Point but everything that we saw was so rotten that you could drive right thru it. So, those of you watching this trying to decide if you should come up this weekend, you will probably be ok. Now if you have to go thru a big bunch of Big Bay, I would suggest waiting. Hope everyone has a great, safe summer. We have been training with the new fireboat and will get some pictures posted here when I get a free half hour.

Eagle Eye looks like it is clear on the Big V...

Is the ice out?

Wind finally switched from the east to the west and moved the ice back east. Had to go out into Daisy bay and could not see any ice in Big Bay. So I would make an assumption that the lake is probably open. Any ice left should just be a pile of needles floating on the south east shores.

I'm not there, so I can't tell exactly what's going on but it looks like a large area of open water developed in the last day with all of the heavy snow on the east side of wake em up Narrows. These two photos are from my Ring Camera facing north towards Niles Point.  You can see what happened with all of snow that fell in the last three days, though the open water could have been wind driven. Hard to say. .

Black Bay had great ice before but a few spots near rockpiles where there were spots of open water. It looks like the weight of the snow has created a little lake in the middle of the bay.

On the south end...   Thanks to some cold spring weather, ice fishing continues strong for those still ice fishing.  The bite remains very good.  Most resorts have pulled their fish houses off for the year, however, some still have fish houses out and others are allowing ATV and side by sides.  Check social media or call ahead to your favorite resort for specifics. Reports this week for walleyes and saugers remain excellent.   A nice mix of jumbo perch, pike, eelpout, and an occasional crappie, tullibee or sturgeon being reported by anglers. Jigging one line and using a live minnow on the second line is the way to go.  Green, glow red, pink and gold were good colors this week.     Monster pike are on a tear!  Good number of pike, some reaching over 45 inches long, being caught using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring in 8 - 14' of water.   As always, work through a resort or outfitter for ice road conditions.  Safety first always. Fish houses are allowed on the ice through March 31st, the walleye / sauger season goes through April 14th and the pike season never ends. On the Rainy River...  The river is opened up along the Nelson Park boat ramp in Birchdale, the Frontier boat ramp and Vidas boat ramp.  This past week, much of the open water skimmed over with the single digit overnight temps.   Areas of the river have popped open again and with temps getting warmer, things are shaping up for the last stretch through the rest of the spring season, which continues through April 14th.   Very good numbers of walleyes are in the river.  Reports this week, even with fewer anglers, have been good.  When temps warm up and the sun shines, things will fire up again.   Jigs with brightly colored plastics or jigs with a frozen emerald shiner have been the desired bait on the river.  Don't overlook slow trolling crankbaits upstream as well.   Good reports of sturgeon being caught on the river as well.  Sturgeon put the feed bag on in the spring.  The bite has been very good.  Most are using a sturgeon rig with a circle hook loaded with crawlers or crawlers / frozen emerald shiners. Up at the NW Angle...  Ice fishing is winding down up at the Angle.  Walleyes, saugers, and a number of various species in the mix again this week.  The bite is still very good with good numbers of fish.  The one two punch of jigging one line and deadsticking the second line is working well.   Check with Angle resorts on transport options from Young's Bay.  Call ahead for ice road guidelines.

With the drifting, kind of hard to tell for sure, but I'm guessing about a foot and still lightly snowing. Cook end!

How much snow did you get on Vermilion?
    • Mike89
lake here refroze too...  started opening again yesterday with the wet snow and wind...  very little ice left today...
    • Hookmaster
A friend who has a cabin between Alex and Fergus said the lake he's on refroze. He texted me a pic from March 12th when it was open and one from 23rd when it wasn't. 🤯
    • SkunkedAgain
I don't think that there has been any ice melt in the past few weeks on Vermilion. Things looked like a record and then Mother Nature swept in again.   I'll give my revised guess of April 21st
