Sturgeon Fishing

5 posts in this topic

Hello, I am an avid sturgeon angler, mostly on the Rainy River, but I am looking to expand my sturgeon fishing elsewhere. Does anyone know of any info on sturgeon fishing on the red? Locations or success? Any info would be fantastic! Thanks.

There is no open season on the Red (in MN/ND) for Sturgeon.

Stu, I had a buddy fishing Sturgeon Hole, out of the Frontier landing a few days ago. He did really well. Never got a really big one, but saw a couple dandies caught and he got decent numbers (I don't think I ever heard an exact number of fish he caught, but I know he was happy).

Thanks for the reply Scoot! I doubt if I'll have any free time to make a trip to over the Rainy for sturgeon this spring. I'll settle for a trip or two on the Winnipeg instead. Right now I'm getting ready for the kitty season which will be getting underway on May 12th. Things are looking excellent so far, the river's in great shape so those whiskered giants otta be cooperative!

I love these fish! The attitude is always fun and they taste great. The strip of y bones can be cut right out with a little effort.    I know where I'll be early in the morning May 13th with topwaters and swimbaits!

Grubens did permits the 2016 season. Fortune bay stopped writing BWCA permits the end of the 2015 season. Sally retired and that ended the permits at the bay.  Some day we will be able to buy permits on line and print them.

The video shown in the link posted above shows most of the fish they're handling going back because they're not ready or too green. The video was from 4/14 so I would bet they are done as that was 1 1/2 weeks ago. Cutfoot was done in less than a week. Cliff will be able to tell you for sure when then finished but I'd guess they were done by the end of last week.
