Is it water temp that dictates a shift from minnows to crawlers and leeches?

Seems that way. Ive never had any luck on crawlers until mid june but the leeches seem to work end of may and early june.

Water temp. is a big part of the switch from minnows to crawlers and leeches but the availability of other types of food sources is also a big factor.

The warmer water makes different types of food available and also make the availability of minnows lower for walleyes.

Because of this the walleyes start shifting their feeding areas and types of food that they prefer.

We always have leeches for the opener. It seems like 1 year out of 5-7 they really out fish minnows. I prefer minnows because they are cheaper and the fish really nail them, but if 4-8 guys are dropping $200 min per person, you hate to leave something out of the arsenol.

So a few questions about Winni as I have never been there before. Do you find that the fishing tapers off as winter progresses, for example if heading up there for Perch and Walleye would you chose January, February or March, or doesn't it seem to matter much?  Also what is the night vs daytime bite like? Trying to plan a few days up there with the wife and trying to decide when to go and if a sleeper is worthwhile or just do a daytime shack.   Any thoughts are appreciated.     Thank you

The Helix 5 gives you the option to view different screens. The view button option shows separate flasher screen, sonar , gps , others. Screen views will run side by side in different combinations, but flasher screen only works by itself. Great little unit. I use mine for gps . Ram mount on handlebar
