I was told by the old timers I would trust at the lake that the massive snow in March and recent rains would give us about four inches. Remember, we are nearly 3 feet down. We would need a inch of rain every day for the rest of the month to get near where we should be. That won't happen....

I talked with the DNR yesterday.

As of now the lake is up only six inches right now. I know that that may sound good but really it is not very good news at all. The DNR says that normally at this time of the year the lake should be up 18 inches or more this time of the year.

Its going to take some time. The lake has been this low before in the past. In fact talking with the DNR and some old timers, the lake was quit abit lower than it is now in the past.

We need a really good week of good soaking rain.

We got a trace this morning. Its all gone already. I traveled from Perham, Mn to Chisholm, Mn to Duluth yesterday evening and there wasn't any snow at all. It seems that everthing was south of here.

all of the moisture we have received in the last month and a half will help some. the lake has come up a little from when it froze over last year. all of the feeder creeks have slowed to a trickle, so that tells me that the snow melt from the last storm is soaking back into the ground water. when that is replentished, the lake will start to rise. even with the three days of rain we got the weekend before easter, there was no standing water in the ditches, it all soaked in. we will have to wait until the lake openes back up and then we will see where we are at with the water level and how many public accesses will be usable............tom fellegy

Will resort owners or the Mille lacs area post (once it gets closer to Opening Weekend), what launches can be used, and ones that cannot be used??? Including Public Accesses???It would save alot of phone calls , and frustrations driving around on Opening weekend.

Just for your info here at Fisher's we dredged our harbor 600 feet out into the lake this spring. We are also installing 36 concrete boat ramp planks to make the ramp smoother and less of an angle. This year we are also adding red and green navigational buoys with corresponding blinking lights at the end of the harbor. If everything goes as planned you should have no problem launching.

Hey Dean,

Thats awesome! Welcome aboard Dean, It will be great having you tell us more of what is going on up on the north east end of the lake here.

I know folks that Fishers will have be one of your best choices for launching your boat this year!

I don't know were the DNR is taking there measurements from

but in front of the cabin in Vineland bay the water is down

about 4 inches from last fall, just before the freeze.

Apparently, the DNR, in cooperation with USGS has a site in Cove Bay that measures the lake level. There are a couple great web sites that water level folks might want to look at. Despite not alot of comparative data (it only gives you the last 31 days), on the Cove Bay gauge it shows the level rose from 9.46 to 10.46 feet in the last month. These are real time gauges measured on the hour, so they are by far the best source of true data on the lake. If you think the lake is down 2 feet from normal. We would have to then say normal for Cove Bay would be 12.46 feet. By watching the gauge after rains, you can see the progress of lake fill.

Actual site: http://waterdata.usgs.gov/nwis/uv?cb_00065=on&format=html&period=365&site_no=05284000

The U.S. Geological Survey's National Water Information System web site includes gage height time-series/real-time data on nine Minnesota reservoirs and lakes that have been collected by automatic recorders and manual field measurements. http://waterdata.usgs.gov/nwis/current/?type=lake&group_key=NONE

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St Paul District Water Control Center, provides on-line real-time water resources data and up to 18 months historical information on twelve Minnesota reservoirs and thirteen lake sites.

with the rain we have recieved the last few days the lake level here in cove bay has come up a little bit. it is still on the low side, but it is higher than last fall when it froze over. with the low water level, the south harbor township poured a new slab at the south harbor township access at bay view last week. it looks real good, if the lake comes up a few more inches, it will be really nice.............tom fellegy

If you look at the above site, is shows the four-year median and mean level at 11.50 feet and current condition of 10.42 feet so according to stats, we are a foot low only in cove bay from the last four years of averages. Tom, thanks for the heads-up on the new ramp in South Harbor.

I'm not there, so I can't tell exactly what's going on but it looks like a large area of open water developed in the last day with all of the heavy snow on the east side of wake em up Narrows. These two photos are from my Ring Camera facing north towards Niles Point.  You can see what happened with all of snow that fell in the last three days, though the open water could have been wind driven. Hard to say. .

Black Bay had great ice before but a few spots near rockpiles where there were spots of open water. It looks like the weight of the snow has created a little lake in the middle of the bay.

On the south end...   Thanks to some cold spring weather, ice fishing continues strong for those still ice fishing.  The bite remains very good.  Most resorts have pulled their fish houses off for the year, however, some still have fish houses out and others are allowing ATV and side by sides.  Check social media or call ahead to your favorite resort for specifics. Reports this week for walleyes and saugers remain excellent.   A nice mix of jumbo perch, pike, eelpout, and an occasional crappie, tullibee or sturgeon being reported by anglers. Jigging one line and using a live minnow on the second line is the way to go.  Green, glow red, pink and gold were good colors this week.     Monster pike are on a tear!  Good number of pike, some reaching over 45 inches long, being caught using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring in 8 - 14' of water.   As always, work through a resort or outfitter for ice road conditions.  Safety first always. Fish houses are allowed on the ice through March 31st, the walleye / sauger season goes through April 14th and the pike season never ends. On the Rainy River...  The river is opened up along the Nelson Park boat ramp in Birchdale, the Frontier boat ramp and Vidas boat ramp.  This past week, much of the open water skimmed over with the single digit overnight temps.   Areas of the river have popped open again and with temps getting warmer, things are shaping up for the last stretch through the rest of the spring season, which continues through April 14th.   Very good numbers of walleyes are in the river.  Reports this week, even with fewer anglers, have been good.  When temps warm up and the sun shines, things will fire up again.   Jigs with brightly colored plastics or jigs with a frozen emerald shiner have been the desired bait on the river.  Don't overlook slow trolling crankbaits upstream as well.   Good reports of sturgeon being caught on the river as well.  Sturgeon put the feed bag on in the spring.  The bite has been very good.  Most are using a sturgeon rig with a circle hook loaded with crawlers or crawlers / frozen emerald shiners. Up at the NW Angle...  Ice fishing is winding down up at the Angle.  Walleyes, saugers, and a number of various species in the mix again this week.  The bite is still very good with good numbers of fish.  The one two punch of jigging one line and deadsticking the second line is working well.   Check with Angle resorts on transport options from Young's Bay.  Call ahead for ice road guidelines.

With the drifting, kind of hard to tell for sure, but I'm guessing about a foot and still lightly snowing. Cook end!

How much snow did you get on Vermilion?
    • Mike89
lake here refroze too...  started opening again yesterday with the wet snow and wind...  very little ice left today...
    • Hookmaster
A friend who has a cabin between Alex and Fergus said the lake he's on refroze. He texted me a pic from March 12th when it was open and one from 23rd when it wasn't. 🤯
    • SkunkedAgain
I don't think that there has been any ice melt in the past few weeks on Vermilion. Things looked like a record and then Mother Nature swept in again.   I'll give my revised guess of April 21st

As I get older it's really not just about sending bullets down range.  Some of it's just the workmanship of the gun and the wow factor. The other two guns I have really wanted which I'll never have now because of their price, is a 8mm Jap Nambu and 9mm German Luger.   Just thought they always looked cool!
