Just wondering if anyone knows how much open water is out there. I am looking to head up there in a week or so.

Thanks for the report. This weather is crazy, it needs to warm up fast I am sick of just looking at my boat.

These were from April 2nd, south access and fetcheimer, but I'm sure thats changed by now with this weather. Hopefully they're right about the 50s next week......

I'm headed up tomorrow morning, couple of new projects going at the cabin. I'll post Sunday any ice conditions. I'm on Jenneke Point. I'd sure like to get the dock and lift in next week. We'll see. Bill

bturck,

That wouldn't happen to have been you that came out on the lake and gave me some helpful hints while I was fishing off the point towards the later end of this winter?

The main lake was still ice covered as of yesterday

(Sunday 4/15). Some open water along shore, ice was white not dark. It'll be a few days yet, maybe out by next weekend?

I was up this weekend. The river is open south of the Cty #19 access, and the open approx 30 yards east of the fishing pier. Up on Jenneke, still locked in tight though. Hopefully this week will take its toll as the dock and lift are set to go in next weekend, hope we don't have to go to plan B. Bill

TommyK. Ya that was me. I walked out to talk to you. I think you had told me you had gotten stuck and you pulled your house all the way down the lake. Hope you found some fish, I noticed you were in the area for quaite awhile. Good luck and hang on. Bill

I got my work out that day for sure both from digging out my truck and walking. I never got into any bigger gills, but picked off quite a few crappies along the drop. Most were less than 9". I am sure I will be up there a time or two this spring.

Sounds good Tommy. Well maybe not, I know you were starting to break a sweat when I talked to you. And people say ice fishing is only fun, I think maybe theres a little work involved. confused.gif Hopefully the ice will be gone by next weekend. If you are in that area look for the dock with the green Floe Boat lift, Blk/Silver Aluma Craft. We're there every weekend and always have a cold one handy. Bill

I went by the pier yesterday afternoon and it looked like most of Minneapolis, and part of St. Paul was there fishing. Must not be any lakes down there?

Hit Knife yesterday. The South access was a ZOO. There had to be at least 100 people fishing from shore, not to mention the boats. Access was full. We caught a few sunnies and crappies. Right up against the bank was best. The rain chased most anglers away. Even with the rain, a great day on the water!!

Fished a couple spots today and got 10 nice sunnies and 5 11 in. crappies. LOTS of small crappies this year.

Was there yesterday and caught dozens from 5-7 inches with orange and chartruse mighty mite at about 3-3.5 feet. Caught 5 10-11 inch crappies at 3.5-4 feet with hot pink red jighead tipped with large crappie minnow. 30 people fishing at any given time. I left around 6pm...about 50 people including those on boats. Crazy!

Of course if people post stuff about the lake in this website, there would be a lot of people fishing there..

actually regardless of what people post here there will be a lot of people fishing there. Knife Lake's spring panfish bite isn't much of a secret. its just funny how people play bumper boats when there's fish all over the lake, not just under the bridge....

I am positive threads like this increases the fishing pressure. Do you have any idea how many people view these threads per day?

I'm not there, so I can't tell exactly what's going on but it looks like a large area of open water developed in the last day with all of the heavy snow on the east side of wake em up Narrows. These two photos are from my Ring Camera facing north towards Niles Point.  You can see what happened with all of snow that fell in the last three days, though the open water could have been wind driven. Hard to say. .

Black Bay had great ice before but a few spots near rockpiles where there were spots of open water. It looks like the weight of the snow has created a little lake in the middle of the bay.

On the south end...   Thanks to some cold spring weather, ice fishing continues strong for those still ice fishing.  The bite remains very good.  Most resorts have pulled their fish houses off for the year, however, some still have fish houses out and others are allowing ATV and side by sides.  Check social media or call ahead to your favorite resort for specifics. Reports this week for walleyes and saugers remain excellent.   A nice mix of jumbo perch, pike, eelpout, and an occasional crappie, tullibee or sturgeon being reported by anglers. Jigging one line and using a live minnow on the second line is the way to go.  Green, glow red, pink and gold were good colors this week.     Monster pike are on a tear!  Good number of pike, some reaching over 45 inches long, being caught using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring in 8 - 14' of water.   As always, work through a resort or outfitter for ice road conditions.  Safety first always. Fish houses are allowed on the ice through March 31st, the walleye / sauger season goes through April 14th and the pike season never ends. On the Rainy River...  The river is opened up along the Nelson Park boat ramp in Birchdale, the Frontier boat ramp and Vidas boat ramp.  This past week, much of the open water skimmed over with the single digit overnight temps.   Areas of the river have popped open again and with temps getting warmer, things are shaping up for the last stretch through the rest of the spring season, which continues through April 14th.   Very good numbers of walleyes are in the river.  Reports this week, even with fewer anglers, have been good.  When temps warm up and the sun shines, things will fire up again.   Jigs with brightly colored plastics or jigs with a frozen emerald shiner have been the desired bait on the river.  Don't overlook slow trolling crankbaits upstream as well.   Good reports of sturgeon being caught on the river as well.  Sturgeon put the feed bag on in the spring.  The bite has been very good.  Most are using a sturgeon rig with a circle hook loaded with crawlers or crawlers / frozen emerald shiners. Up at the NW Angle...  Ice fishing is winding down up at the Angle.  Walleyes, saugers, and a number of various species in the mix again this week.  The bite is still very good with good numbers of fish.  The one two punch of jigging one line and deadsticking the second line is working well.   Check with Angle resorts on transport options from Young's Bay.  Call ahead for ice road guidelines.

With the drifting, kind of hard to tell for sure, but I'm guessing about a foot and still lightly snowing. Cook end!

How much snow did you get on Vermilion?
    • Mike89
lake here refroze too...  started opening again yesterday with the wet snow and wind...  very little ice left today...
    • Hookmaster
A friend who has a cabin between Alex and Fergus said the lake he's on refroze. He texted me a pic from March 12th when it was open and one from 23rd when it wasn't. 🤯
    • SkunkedAgain
I don't think that there has been any ice melt in the past few weeks on Vermilion. Things looked like a record and then Mother Nature swept in again.   I'll give my revised guess of April 21st
