Todays Fishing Media Personalities

Recommended Posts

Looking for others opinions here,,,with the assortment of fishing shows on TV theses days ,,,If You had the opportunity to fish with one of them,, who would be on the top and bottom of the list and why?

Al Linder, Dan Sura and Kent Hrbeck would be on the top for me as I think I would learn something ,,with John G and Babe W on the lower end I think I would come away with some thing but our personalities wouldn't mesh.

I dont fish for bass but I would how ever like to view Bill Dance (from a distance) just to watch for a blooper shocked.gif

So who would You fish with??????

I would absolutely love to go out with Al, James, or Ron Linder, and Dan Sura! I would do my best to make my brain a sponge and soak up all I could. I have a similar opinion about some of the southern boys and their bass fishing. I enjoy watching Bill Dance and Jimmy Houston and a few others, but largemout fishing isn't really my forte. I enjoy fishing bass, but I don't give it the cult-like attention the good ol' boys down south do. We're in the walleye cult up in these parts!

I also agree that there would be not as much to gain from going out with some of the other media anglers. But, as far as I'm concerned, I would consider it to be quite a privilage to be able to go out fishing with any of the Linder's Media anglers. For sure.

Thats a tough question...

- The Lindners are going to be a pretty popular answer and who could turn down a day fishing with any of them.

- The In-Fish guys Doug Stange & Steve Hoffman would be great in the boat as well. They also are avid catfisherman so I think we could have a good time.

- Bill Dance is a blue cat guy too.

Any of the Angling Edge staff, the Lindners or Dan Sura. That would be my complete list.

The 3 Lindners are at the top of my list with Al being first.

Babe is at the bottom. John G is close down there too. He's just too loud for me.

#1. would be Al Lindner no question, whats everybodys beef with Babe Winkelmen? i guess he can sound a little cocky at times but seems to share alot of good info, Jon Gillespie would be alright if u had an extra long fuse and a good pair of earplugs with, other wise u could just spike one of his lienie's with a few ritalin wink.gif

Without a doubt it would be Kent Hrbek. I don’t often watch fishing programs but I listen to him every Friday on the radio, he has got a great personality, likes a few brews, laughs a lot and would be like you’re best fishing partner. On the bottom would be the Linders, I just don’t care for the pompous guys.

For me it would be Kent Hrbek and Tony Dean. They both seem like likable guys and Tony could drive the boat while Kent and I worked on a couple cases of beer. grin.gif

I would have to say Larry Dahlberg, just because I know there is a good chance that the fish we're after could very well pull me into the water if I wasn't careful.

If it was only walleye fishing it would have to be Gary Roach. My dream day would be to pheasant hunt with Kent Hrbek and Tony Dean some where in South Dakota in the morning and then hit a spot on the Missouri for walleyes in the afternoon.

Aweeee come on Northlander ,,I did say "learn something" ,,,I wasnt specific that it had to be about fishing,,the idea was an enjoyable day fishing ,,Last season when we fished I didnt always learn some thing but I enjoyed it none the less ,,,simply put ,,if the fish dont want to bite ,,I would prefer some one to have a civil conversation with in the boat

Keith Kavajecz and Gary Parsons, it'd be a challenge to name an individual that did more to advance the frontiers of modern walleye fishing tactics more than these two guys.

Another good one would be Babe. I say that because he was at a resort filming a show while we were there. Every evening he came down to the deck overlooking the docks where the guests hang out at the end of the day to have cocktails and shoot the b.s. Babe was friendly and personable, has some great stories, and tells them really well (I'm sure that holds true for a lot of these guys, but I can vouch for Babe's storytelling).

Last on my list would have to be Roland Martin. I think all he would teach me is how to push a sponser.

Bill Dance would probably hook me, knock me overboard, or drop a rattlesnack out of a tree on me so for klutziness I would avoid him. I would also avoid one certain media darling from this state. I think he's a sponsor or something here, maybe visits regularly, but he's snubbed one family member and two friends. Maybe he was having multiple bad days (or the hot weather got to him at the Game Fair), but when you're on that media pedestal, you have to play nice. I won't name names but you could probably guess without any more hints.

But getting back to being positive, how about Linders of course, Tred Barta would be fun, Pete Maina too, Hrby for stories and just hangin out, and Chip Leer for MN cred and excellent multi-species skills.

I for one would take Dave Genz out any day, open water and on the ice. To be honest he should have a TV show all year round.

I for one have met just much all of them...it would be fun fishing with Shara and Herby....Gary Roach is a very nice guy too.

Linders and Takasaki....I do agree they know more about fishing then I could ever dream about but their personal interaction is less to be desired. (enter puke smiley here)

I always pictured Babe as more of a hunter then a fisherman.

Kent Hrbeck all the way he's the man I watch him every Sunday Night and think he would be cool to fish with, He's a real down to earth person you could fish with and have a few beers with afterwards. Last on my list is Rolan Martin If I didnt have the same tackle or rods as him he would try to sell me on a different brand.

I'm not there, so I can't tell exactly what's going on but it looks like a large area of open water developed in the last day with all of the heavy snow on the east side of wake em up Narrows. These two photos are from my Ring Camera facing north towards Niles Point.  You can see what happened with all of snow that fell in the last three days, though the open water could have been wind driven. Hard to say. .

Black Bay had great ice before but a few spots near rockpiles where there were spots of open water. It looks like the weight of the snow has created a little lake in the middle of the bay.

On the south end...   Thanks to some cold spring weather, ice fishing continues strong for those still ice fishing.  The bite remains very good.  Most resorts have pulled their fish houses off for the year, however, some still have fish houses out and others are allowing ATV and side by sides.  Check social media or call ahead to your favorite resort for specifics. Reports this week for walleyes and saugers remain excellent.   A nice mix of jumbo perch, pike, eelpout, and an occasional crappie, tullibee or sturgeon being reported by anglers. Jigging one line and using a live minnow on the second line is the way to go.  Green, glow red, pink and gold were good colors this week.     Monster pike are on a tear!  Good number of pike, some reaching over 45 inches long, being caught using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring in 8 - 14' of water.   As always, work through a resort or outfitter for ice road conditions.  Safety first always. Fish houses are allowed on the ice through March 31st, the walleye / sauger season goes through April 14th and the pike season never ends. On the Rainy River...  The river is opened up along the Nelson Park boat ramp in Birchdale, the Frontier boat ramp and Vidas boat ramp.  This past week, much of the open water skimmed over with the single digit overnight temps.   Areas of the river have popped open again and with temps getting warmer, things are shaping up for the last stretch through the rest of the spring season, which continues through April 14th.   Very good numbers of walleyes are in the river.  Reports this week, even with fewer anglers, have been good.  When temps warm up and the sun shines, things will fire up again.   Jigs with brightly colored plastics or jigs with a frozen emerald shiner have been the desired bait on the river.  Don't overlook slow trolling crankbaits upstream as well.   Good reports of sturgeon being caught on the river as well.  Sturgeon put the feed bag on in the spring.  The bite has been very good.  Most are using a sturgeon rig with a circle hook loaded with crawlers or crawlers / frozen emerald shiners. Up at the NW Angle...  Ice fishing is winding down up at the Angle.  Walleyes, saugers, and a number of various species in the mix again this week.  The bite is still very good with good numbers of fish.  The one two punch of jigging one line and deadsticking the second line is working well.   Check with Angle resorts on transport options from Young's Bay.  Call ahead for ice road guidelines.

With the drifting, kind of hard to tell for sure, but I'm guessing about a foot and still lightly snowing. Cook end!

How much snow did you get on Vermilion?
    • Mike89
lake here refroze too...  started opening again yesterday with the wet snow and wind...  very little ice left today...
    • Hookmaster
A friend who has a cabin between Alex and Fergus said the lake he's on refroze. He texted me a pic from March 12th when it was open and one from 23rd when it wasn't. 🤯
    • SkunkedAgain
I don't think that there has been any ice melt in the past few weeks on Vermilion. Things looked like a record and then Mother Nature swept in again.   I'll give my revised guess of April 21st

As I get older it's really not just about sending bullets down range.  Some of it's just the workmanship of the gun and the wow factor. The other two guns I have really wanted which I'll never have now because of their price, is a 8mm Jap Nambu and 9mm German Luger.   Just thought they always looked cool!

I had a guy hit me with a lightly used 1969 BAR, he wanted $1650 with an older Leupold scope. More than I think they are worth, I made an offer, he declined end of story.   You know if you look at the old brochures, a grade II BAR sold for $250 in the late 60s, $1650 would be a good return on your investment.    Why would anybody want a 50 year old gun, they are heavy, have wood stocks, and blued metal.  I guess mainly to keep their gun safes glued to the floor. lol   You can probably buy a stainless rifle that you never have to clean, with a synthetic stock you never have to refinish, is as light as a feather, and for half as much money, perfect.   I'm too old for a youth gun, although I've shrunk enough that it would probably fit. lol   No Ruger 10/44s.   Jim
