Deep Cell charge... 2 amp or 15 amp?

4 posts in this topic

My charger has two settings... without going outside to look.. I think they are 2 amp charge and 15 amp charge...

What is the difference (besides 2 amp taking longer!)... is one better than the other for getting the best charge and keeping the battery healthy?

Use the 15 amp on you deep cycle battery, it'll cycle down to nothing once the battery is charged. Some guys will use the 2 amp for maintaining the battery during long term storage, personally once I charge a battery I take it off the charger and will do a maintenance charge every few months.

Small batteries like motorcycle batteries use the 2amp setting.

Be careful about using this type of charger for ‘maintaining’ a battery. If it does not automatically lower it’s voltage to 13.2 – 13.6 volts then you run the risk of ruining the battery if it is left on the battery for long periods. ST is correct in that you should disconnect the charger during storage. The beauty of the ‘on board’ 3 stage chargers is that you can leave them connected to the battery for as long as you want without hurting the battery.

I crossed over to the dark side of smallies about 15 years ago. Mostly chase pannies in winter but used to chase eyes a few times on the hard water each season.   I could post a ton of pics if you need more proof.

Sorry to make you hold up a bottom feeder, but we needed to see it!

I was up over the weekend and my shoreline was getting pretty sketchy.  Had a pocket of open water down the shore about a 100 yards. Where I could see the bottom in two to three feet of water.  Walked out about a hundred yards and popped four holes Saturday afternoon. There was 17- 18.5"s of ice in those four holes. Looking at the forecast I can't see the ice sticking around too much longer.  The holes I popped had 5-6" of pretty mushy cloudy stuff on top and about 12"s of pretty solid stuff underneath it.
