Hey Jim,

Did you make it out crappie fishing the past few weeks? I was going to swing by this morning and say hi, but you weren't around. I'm into my second week now of ice fishing rehab/withdrawals. Work is totally insane, over-rated, and it is going to be a long season!

I sure would like to get out with ya sometime this summer and crush some of those Burntside Walleyes! I will give you a call sometime this summer.

Take Care,

Justin A.K.A "The Fish Master"! cool.gif

Jim took too much Geritol, Justin. With a mouth that size, you'll understand how such things can happen. His obituary will be in the next editions of the Ely newspapers.

Kidding!!!!!! grin.gifgrin.gifgrin.gif

Sure, now I've done it. I'll just have to keep my sonar tuned for torpedos this summer on Bside. shocked.gif

No bubba, no smarting here. I have some characteristics of a rhino, including its thick skin.

You'll note from the date that it was April Fool's Day, and I was just having some fun with you, you old bugger. grin.gif

Geritol?? AHH-HAAA!!! That makes sense- He probably needs those vitamins to give himself a little boost reeling in those 14" Burntside Walleyes! Then, after he reels those monsters in, he needs to take a few days off to recuperate and order up the Ben-Gay from Sam's Club in the economy sized 5 gallon pail!!! grin.gifgrin.gifgrin.gifgrin.gif

Later,

Hey Steve-

Jim is a pretty crafty guy, I will give him that. You just need to enter his brain to get the best of him! Just remember he has copious amounts of time over at the bait shop to think of these things. He is just really worried that his new Bowflex machine isn't going to get him into shape for Walleye fishing. I can understand that because that landing net gets awfully heavy when Justin is in the boat!

You got that right, Steve grin.gif When (and if) Justin gets into my boat I will have to drink a six pack of Geritol, since I'll be catching all of the Walleyes, and Justin will contribute his usual limit of Rock Bass cool.gif Don't worry JG, I'll carry the load again! smile.gif Remember a takeoff of the old song title, "You aint my Brother, you're heavy" grin.gifgrin.gifgrin.gifgrin.gifgrin.gifgrin.gif

That's it, El Stevo, the gloves are off,Babeee mad.gif Just for that, I'm sentencing you and Justin to be fishing partners this summer, so I only need one torpedo to rid the world of you two vermine smile.gif I'll know when you guys are on the lake, since the boat will displace enough water to bring the level up 3 feet. grin.gifgrin.gifgrin.gifgrin.gifgrin.gif

Jim, I'll use small words so you can un-der-stand: You ain't got game. grin.gif

P.S. -- It's spelled "vermin," not "vermine." Of course, Hillman told me you flunked spelling. grin.gifgrin.gif

I'll finally pipe in on this one and be on Jim's side. Hillman? YIKES! HA HA OH man...Steve I believe you just gave Jim enough ammo to last a life time. Hillman...oh boy. The self proclaimed "historian of Ely". shocked.gif

Anywho...have a fun time Jim. GAME ON!

Harv, I didn't give Jimmie any ammo at all, because I don't hang out with Mr. Hillman.

But Jim doesn't need me to supply him with ammo. He loads his own bullets, and he's always gotta wear those knee-high rubber boots while he's doing it because of how deep the bull---- gets. grin.gifgrin.gifgrin.gifgrin.gif

I'm surprised Jim hasn't thrown a haymaker back yet. I think he's out in the garage along Burntside Lake calibrating his new torpedoes. grin.gif

Yo, Jim, don't zap my house with one. Wait until I'm alone in the boat so you spare my wife and the cats and dogs. SOMEBODY'S gotta survive to cash in on all that life insurance. grin.gifgrin.gifgrin.gif

I don't know Steve, when you quote Mr. Hillman, it appears that you two are good Buds! cool.gif I also notice that you use the term Bubba quite a bit, must be from the series "Nash Bridges." Perhaps we're seeing a preview from the next community play. Is Mike playing your partner Cheech? grin.gifgrin.gifgrin.gifgrin.gifgrin.gifgrin.gif

Bubba, I've quoted you, too, to a couple of friends of mine.

"Maki says you can catch lakers in shallow mucky bays," Foss said.

Does that mean you and I are hanging out, bubba? grin.gifgrin.gifgrin.gif

I should have known when the going gets tough for old Maki, the fat jokes and Rock Bass comments would be flying!!! grin.gifgrin.gifgrin.gif

Jim is just upset that his Hoveround electric wheelchair won't pull his new Otter sled out on the ice. His is also mad that Samz place isn't going to stock Ensure anymore!!!!

I have to admit that I find Steve's comments about Iron Mike particularly disturbing!!! I think they may be bestest buddies!! grin.gif Also, his bubba comments raise a red flag that he may be a fan of the TV show "Walker-Texas Ranger" That is alot of ammo The Great Outdoors can use to his advantage!!!

Oh, boy...I can't wait to see what is on here tomorrow night...... grin.gif

You hanging with Mike makes me uneasy about being seeing talking to you in public! grin.gifgrin.gifgrin.gifgrin.gif

In the future, any tips I may share with you about Burntside, will have to be given in an abandoned warehouse on the water front! grin.gifgrin.gifgrin.gifgrin.gifgrin.gif

Out of respect for Jim, who showed this morning that he can't take the heat in the kitchen, I'm going to withdraw.

I ran into him at Blomberg's and he whined for 10 minutes about the hard time he was getting. So I'll just stop giving him crap on the forums. But, in the best Ely tradition, I'll whisper behind his back into all the dark corners around town that he JUST CAN'T STAND THE GUFF. grin.gifgrin.gifgrin.gifgrin.gifgrin.gif

Justin, shoot me an e-mail on the photo opp, will you? I'm INTERESTED, but, ah, don't want to share the opp with other folks who might have cameras, you know? My e-mail addy is right below in my signature on every post.

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭
    • Rick G
Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
