Just watch this forum and you'll be fine. Shouldn't miss it if you keep a good eye on what everyone else is doing. Usually pretty good run around the 20th give or take a few days. Plenty of time still to check for holes in the net.

Lets hope that the ice decides to leave the shoreline on park point. It's starting to look a lot like it did two years ago.

We'll keep you posted!!!!

Gear: Waders, neoprene gloves, buckets, flashlight/headlamp and a seine if you have one. If not theres usually someone to pair up with.

A good lantern is a nice thing to have as well as a cooler or folding chair to sit on so you can watch BD110 pull his 15th pull in a row without anything. grin.gif

Dress warm and in layers. Cotton is no good as you will get warm when pulling and cool off when watching.

Remember no fires or alcohol on park point. Most locals on the lake side of PP dont like smelters already and love to call the police at any wrapper or bottle dropped so lets not give them anything to cry about.

dont need anything but a few blocks of C4.

that aside, a dip net for rivers, a siene for the open lake. bring a lantern, waders, head lamp, bucket, and have a good time.

I'm interested in learning. I see that some nets are 1/4 and some are 1/8th...i would assume 1/8th so the critters don't slip through, but....would imagine the drag on those things get pretty tough when filled with smelt...especially with only eigth in holes....

Christiansen Nets is the only way to go. Sock "condom" or not. I would recomend the sock though. I think I paid about $140 for mine about 3 or 4 years ago. You have to get poles and I recomend PVC with caps on bottom and top but drill some holes in the bottom. Some guys put 1 pvc inside another pvc and others put a wood dowling in the pvc. Also a lot of 2by4s and splinters.

Interesting you mentioned the smelt running under the ice bit... As I was thinking this as well.. But, just yesterday, I was just to a local and non-local commercial guy about this very thing.... Both stated, they are seeing these smelt spawning in deeper water then what we normally have seen. The non-local is seeing this on the Michigan side of Superior... So, some still come to the shore, but most (now from what they told me from what they seen in their nets) are spawning in 20 to 30FOW after ice out by what they are seeing in their nets.

Chadwick just keep your eyes here and when you see we have started to hit it come on down and join in on the fun. Another guy pulling the seign always helps.

It's been years since I went smelting. What happened to dipnets??

Dipnets are for the rivers. Most of the seining is off the Point. Rivers have been hit & miss in years past but it last year was OK. Are the smelt on the rise, we'll see.

chadwick,

There are many of us that will be down on the shore when, if not before the smelt start to run. It will be no trouble at all to get you out for as many pulls as you wish to take.

The more people Northlander can line up to make the pulls for him the better. That way he can just stand on shore and let you know if your doing it correctly. grin.gifgrin.gif

Steve,

That should make us even. Unless you would like to keep it going.

All kidding aside I hope we are able to pull of good season this year. The only plus side to a poor run is you will not have to clean as many smelt.

We had a great year in the rivers last year (with dipnets) and I hope it is the same this year. I might have to make it to the point this year though as I have never seined before.

Hey BD110 its about working smart just not working for the sake of working. wink.gif But if you need the exercise have at it.

Hopefully the smelting is as good as last year. It was fun using a dip net for a change of pace.

I have also had a few writers wanting to come up and do a story on smelting. Hopefully it pans out.

Just jumped out of da boxcar, and got hooked up. Dam sure lousy long ride. Anybody been dippin for those silvery lil buggers yet? Can hardly wait, will maybe even giv er a go tonight. Some of the salted ones I left in da sawdust were tasty tonight. It was a long winter down south, good to be back in da area. Chipped my tooth this summer, crackin a dam pecan. Hurts like hell. I better lay down.. confused.gifDa doc increased my meds a lil this year, so I get a lil wozzzie sometimes.

I'm not there, so I can't tell exactly what's going on but it looks like a large area of open water developed in the last day with all of the heavy snow on the east side of wake em up Narrows. These two photos are from my Ring Camera facing north towards Niles Point.  You can see what happened with all of snow that fell in the last three days, though the open water could have been wind driven. Hard to say. .

Black Bay had great ice before but a few spots near rockpiles where there were spots of open water. It looks like the weight of the snow has created a little lake in the middle of the bay.

On the south end...   Thanks to some cold spring weather, ice fishing continues strong for those still ice fishing.  The bite remains very good.  Most resorts have pulled their fish houses off for the year, however, some still have fish houses out and others are allowing ATV and side by sides.  Check social media or call ahead to your favorite resort for specifics. Reports this week for walleyes and saugers remain excellent.   A nice mix of jumbo perch, pike, eelpout, and an occasional crappie, tullibee or sturgeon being reported by anglers. Jigging one line and using a live minnow on the second line is the way to go.  Green, glow red, pink and gold were good colors this week.     Monster pike are on a tear!  Good number of pike, some reaching over 45 inches long, being caught using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring in 8 - 14' of water.   As always, work through a resort or outfitter for ice road conditions.  Safety first always. Fish houses are allowed on the ice through March 31st, the walleye / sauger season goes through April 14th and the pike season never ends. On the Rainy River...  The river is opened up along the Nelson Park boat ramp in Birchdale, the Frontier boat ramp and Vidas boat ramp.  This past week, much of the open water skimmed over with the single digit overnight temps.   Areas of the river have popped open again and with temps getting warmer, things are shaping up for the last stretch through the rest of the spring season, which continues through April 14th.   Very good numbers of walleyes are in the river.  Reports this week, even with fewer anglers, have been good.  When temps warm up and the sun shines, things will fire up again.   Jigs with brightly colored plastics or jigs with a frozen emerald shiner have been the desired bait on the river.  Don't overlook slow trolling crankbaits upstream as well.   Good reports of sturgeon being caught on the river as well.  Sturgeon put the feed bag on in the spring.  The bite has been very good.  Most are using a sturgeon rig with a circle hook loaded with crawlers or crawlers / frozen emerald shiners. Up at the NW Angle...  Ice fishing is winding down up at the Angle.  Walleyes, saugers, and a number of various species in the mix again this week.  The bite is still very good with good numbers of fish.  The one two punch of jigging one line and deadsticking the second line is working well.   Check with Angle resorts on transport options from Young's Bay.  Call ahead for ice road guidelines.

With the drifting, kind of hard to tell for sure, but I'm guessing about a foot and still lightly snowing. Cook end!

How much snow did you get on Vermilion?
    • Mike89
lake here refroze too...  started opening again yesterday with the wet snow and wind...  very little ice left today...
    • Hookmaster
A friend who has a cabin between Alex and Fergus said the lake he's on refroze. He texted me a pic from March 12th when it was open and one from 23rd when it wasn't. 🤯
    • SkunkedAgain
I don't think that there has been any ice melt in the past few weeks on Vermilion. Things looked like a record and then Mother Nature swept in again.   I'll give my revised guess of April 21st

As I get older it's really not just about sending bullets down range.  Some of it's just the workmanship of the gun and the wow factor. The other two guns I have really wanted which I'll never have now because of their price, is a 8mm Jap Nambu and 9mm German Luger.   Just thought they always looked cool!
