Safest way is to hook up a ciggy lighter connection for your boat. The H2O power cord (with Cig lighter connection) has internal circuitry to reduce the 12 volts to match the battery input for the unit (around 3.2V). Do not hardware 12V to the H2O! Smoke!

Correct, I would install a cig lighter outlet. They are inexpensive and easy to install.

If you're looking for a quick cheap way without installing the cigarette light you can pick up the cigarette lighter with alligator clips to hook directly onto your battery. Then just plug your H2O power supply into it. I'll cost you lest than $10 and no worries.
