black powder 4 longbeards?

3 posts in this topic

have any of you guys used a muzzel loading shot gun for turkeys and if so what do you think is the best powder and shot size. think I'm going to give it a whirl with the old smokepole this year and I'm going to be using a knight black powder shotgun with 3 or31/2 in wads.

I've always wanted to and with some of the new muzzleloader shotguns out there you don't need to sacrifice killing range to use them.

Good Luck!

I got into smoke burning turkey hunting last year because it was the only way to get a lic, was talked into buying a white tominator from a guy that was sittng on a little rock in a big ocean and he told me it would shoot as good if not better than my modern gun and he was right!! Used it to kill 3 toms in 3 states and it will outperform my SBE with a turkey choke and the best loads I can find for it, hard to believe intill you pattern these guns its pretty impressivewhen a little black powder and some copper-plated 5's will beat the modern loads.

Very high expectations. Especially that splake...36 inches would be 2.5 inches longer than what the state record is.

Good for him holding that big pig.

Going to hit it tomorrow. Haven't decided where we will but in at the junction or head towards birchdale. Have heard varying fishing reports. Any info is appreciated! Tight lines everyone!

I was up for my first trip to RR on Wednesday and Thursday. Launched at Birchdale Wednesday morning because it was the only one open. Launched at Vidas on Thursday.  Fished the ice edge as it pushed westward for some of both days with minimal success. Caught a 28.5" and 26.5" on consecutive casts on Wednesday but not much other action at ice edge.  We had our most success at the connection of the Rapid River (just west of Vidas Landing). Caught about 45 walleyes total with a 28" and 26" being the biggest from that spot.  We also hooked up with 15 sturgeon, landing 4 of them. A 66", 60" and finished the trip landing two sturgeon in the same net (a 42" and 32", or so).  It was an amazing experience and I will be back again in the upcoming years!
