Fishing Report Clubs - LIMITED MEMBERSHIP - Join Today - FREE   01/24/2018

Fishing Minnesota had added a new menu item (see above) called Fishing Report Clubs. It's a way to keep the really good fishing reports coming and being shared only with those who also provide detailed fishing reports. We will only approve new members who request to join if they have already posted a recent fishing report in the area forum, associated with the Fishing Report Club area  you want to join. We are going to limit the number of regular memberships, in the Fishing Report Clubs, to the top 20  members in each Club, to those with the best frequency and quality fishing reports provided in the club and less so in the regular fishing report forum open to all members. The higher quality fishing report reserved for the club of course. If  you want fishing reports  around your area, I would Join Now, some of the clubs are starting to fill fast. Use the Fishing Reports Club link in the Menu above (after you've posted a fishing report in the regular area forum) and request to Join.

Anyone know how the ice is holding up off of the lester/brighton beach area? Is it still walkable? Any recent reports from out there?

I've heard rumor the ice breaker will be out this week and coal shipments will start by the end of this week. If that happens, I can't imagine the ice will stick to shore very long. We've been very fortunate this year with the ice actually locked in shore to shore in our bay.

I heard that they will start busting it up next week as well.

so we could be shore fishing this weekend then?

My buddy was up there yesterday, called me on the way there to rub it in that he was going to the north shore fishing. I felt that since I wasn't on spring break and he was, I wouldn't tell him about the ice.

HA... that's kind of mean. But very funny. I think this weekend maybe wishfull thinking for the long poles. But I know that I am one that is wishing for streams to be flowing. See you guys up there soon. By the way mille lacs doesn't sound to easy to fish right now either. rought time of the year.

Looking at the schedule on the maritime web site this morning, the Mesabi Miner is due to leave on 3/15. I would expect the Alder to be out busting ice anytime now.

I believe the last nites news said the Alder was to begin breaking ice in the twin ports this week and head to Thunder Bay next week to help open their port

I don't think the ice along shore will be out soon even though the cutter(s) (I read that the Biscanye Bay is coming to assist later in the week) will be out. The Alder will only break a channel from the harbor to open water in the shipping lane. One channel from each entry that is. Mother Nature will have to do the rest.

I need to update/correct myself...the Alder is out of commish with engine troubs...the Biscayne Bay will be busting ice starting Thursday.

During lunch today, I saw the cutter from Michigan breaking ice in the bay today. It looked like that 15-18 inch thick ice wasn't even slowing her down! Ice fishing on the big lake may be over... frown.gif I sure hope it isn't another 12 years for another ice over like we had this year!

Don't be too sad that it's over... Just means we can get to the open-water fishing a little sooner! grin.gif

That cutter was hauling butt through that ice. She reported 24 to 30 inches in places.

How long does that cutter spend busting ice? Just today or will they be doing it for a few days?

Tom,

I thinking about coming up on Monday to get my boat. Are they supposed to be still out there? If so I might take cruise in town to see that or are they to far out to see? If everything works out will you be around? If so I'll swing in and say hi.

I wonder if you would still need both on you if you have the lifetime licence

It's go time, i pretty much have all my gear ready for end of March for NE. Our first hunt is archery only then I get to come home and get even with the pipe bomb. Good luck Wanderer once you get that first they just start to drop after that. Bow or shotgun they are a blast. Bisonguy, Scout scout scout. The more you know what the birds are doing and want to do will help. Being a better woodsman and knowing your land and what the birds are doing will put more birds in the dirt then great calling. Patience is another huge part of turkey hunting. I am 1st to want to start running and gunning and give up on a bird i've been working but over the years have got a lot better and just need to give some setups a chance before moving. Good luck be safe.

Anyone have a chance to play with these yet? I'm thinking of getting one to add a second unit to my boat. I have a hook 5 already and it is decent for what I use it for. Also, if I stay with just the original hook series, anyone know if there is a way to make a copy of the lake chip?

Cliff is right. If the upper jaw extends past the lower jaw or lip (aka an underbite), then it’s a whitefish. If the lower lip is even with or extends past the upper lip, then it’s a Cisco.  This according to the DNR website. Cisco’s also seem to have an irredescent hue to them vs. whitefish, which in Lake V have a slight brown/yellow hue to them. Hard to explain in words. Bleeding fish...plenty of YouTube videos on how to do it.  I gill them. Leaves your fillets pearly white and creates way less blood and slime during the fillet process. Many say the fillet tastes better too.

First off welcome to the site ! Fish that area quite often and have seen some good flocks around there.  I would get out and do some glassing in the area , especially around some picked corn fields. Right now they are wintered up but will break  apart once spring gets closer. Maybe hit up a local bait store and ask around if anyone knows of a spot. Or look at the landowners list that received permits in that area. They legally have to grant permission to hunt there land but unfortunately a lot of landowners will tell you they are full even if there not  Good luck in your search.

this will be my first time chasing Minnesota turkeys. Any tips on where to go around Lake Lida area?
    • AlwaysFishing23
When i was there all could find was perch but i only fished for about 3-4 hours all weekend. Not sure on panfish but i know the walleye bit is still pretty good. I'm sure theres plenty of panfish to be had back there though to.

+1 here.  I miss the hills of SE MN but when I have birds walking through my yard it’s hard to leave Central MN. Its not like they’re gonna be super easy but I’m trying to get my first with a bow, and that’s not easy.  Not yet anyway.  The more days I can get in, the better.  And sticking around home makes THAT part easier. When I first started hunting turkeys it took me three seasons to kill a bird.  Then every year after that was a score with the shotgun for about 20 seasons maybe?  I’m going into my second legitimate season of effort with my bow.  Hoping two times is a charm.

I spent a little time last summer looking for weed walleyes in Niles Bay. About 10 minutes into my experiment I caught a chunky 22" on a spinner rig over a weedbed in about 10'. The weeds were growing about halfway to the surface but that fish had no problem smacking my bait. I'll keep experimenting this year.... can't wait for open water!

I hear the panfish are kicking it up a bit? Any word out there?
