Wilson Lake

5 posts in this topic

I was wondering where Wilson Lake near Tofte is located. And is it close to Fourmile lake. The maps I have are not very good.

It's been a long time but I thought it was closer to Isabella. By Windy and Dumbell kind of.

Wilson Lake is west of Fourmile Lake . It is north of the same grade (road) that Fourmile is just south of . I don't remember the road number off the top of my head, but have driven to both lakes many times over the years. The grade runs between Co.7 and the Sawbill trail . I grew up knowing the grade as the "Wilson Grade" . Others on this forum call it the "Fourmile Grade". The Superior National Forest map will show it.

Wilson is about 3.5 miles south-west of Fourmile Lake as the crow flies. Just a hair under 25 miles driving from Finland.

If you are coming from the south you would take Lake County Road 7 off of Hwy 1 in Finland to Forest Road 170 and then to Forest Road 355.

I have also worried about the quality of the bite...and the absence of perch. At least on the northwest side, anyways, where we almost never mark small perch anymore.  In years past, the best indicator of a soon-to-be big red mark on the Vex was that the small perch vacated the area.  I did see TONS of perch down on the south side this year, but I don't know how the numbers there compared to years past, either.   But yeah, the bite has been excellent for, what, three years now?  We're also catching a decent mix of fish (though of course most are from the 2013 year class).  The only good thing to mention, at least in my experience, is that the fish do look very healthy and fat, very unlike the fish during the "boom years" in the mid-2000's when everything you'd catch would be a skinny 26 incher.

Bite has been non existent for us this weekend for pike...we fished out of springsteel yesterday one flag. We are out of warroad and no flags yet... We tried as shallow as 4ft, out in 11ft now.

When I was a kid, I used to ask my dad to take me ice fishing--he would always say "wait 'till it gets warmer"......
