No? Well hopefully my net is in the river a lot those 2 days. Man I cant wait! I think this years Grand Slam will see record catches. Fish should be all over the river by then.

Lets see, Jig, Rig, bottom bounce spinners, pull sticks/cranks or hand line? HMM. Maybe we will just have to do it all and hope for the best. No matter what ya like to do there should be plenty of fish to keep ya interested.

Good luck everyone. Even you Cheffrey. tongue.gif

No Luck Needed Steve!

I just have to be quicker to get off the bucket, and make sure that the livewell is sealed off this year.

Look out, here come's Ballz Draggin!

Theres some days I wish I was luckier than good. I guess preperation makes luck though.

I may have to take out the Lund and try for some Crappies after work. To nice to not take advantage of it.

Ill hit Park Point and troll for some Coho and see what the water temp is. Still may be too cold for smelt but who knows.

I saw a post in this thread saying that the mailing address was incorrect on the registration form on the Grand Slam website. Is the form out there correct? Or did I send my check and registration to the wrong place? Just wanted to double-check. Thanks

They both are fine I was having my folks take care of registration this year and if they come here I hand deliver them to them. They have the same set up as I do and they do all the stuff at Mr. Ds the night be-for so I thought if I had it mailed to them it would be easier. But they both will work see ya all there for a great fishing should be good fishing this year what team will do well this year smile.gif.

I was reading the registration form and saw where it says I must maintain a 100,000 dollars of liability insurance on my boat in order to be eligible to fish?

Am I also required to have a partner?

Wade, This is a team event, Total weigh 4 fish per-day. Wade all Tournaments have this 100,000.00 Liability for the tournament you can call and have them add it for those to days and it is a must to get a permit from the DNR. as a partner goes you need 4 good fish each day and you can only have 2-fish per angler so the math will say yes you do.

Wade you can only have 2 fish over 20" per day and the rest have to be under. All could be under 20" if needed. You will need 1 big fish to finish in the money usually. Im talking a 28" or a couple nice 26"ers.

Grab a partner and fish it. Its a lot of fun and this year there will be a lot of nice fish caught. That is as long as we keep a decent weather pattern. If its muddy like last year it could be tough. Even then we all seemed to find fish. You and Loonasea should partner up.

OPk, thanks for those answers. Next question. Whats the damage to the wallet? I can't seem to find a price tag on the website.

Might not be in the cards for this year, but maybe next year.

Wade it is on the home page? $220.00 per team and in the flyer hope you can see it now grin.gif. Hope to see ya there sharpen those hooks smile.gif.

Wade 220 for a weekend isnt bad. Thats 110 per person and 55 per day That isnt bad for for a good outing of fun. You never know when the horseshoe will work. Good money to be had. laugh.gif

Wade if you want to have a chance at winning some $ you have to spend some $. If the Grand Slam is too pricey for you try the Hawg Walleye on Island Lake. Great Tourney and cheap!

Just not in my budget this year fellas. I will have to give the hog walleye tourney a try this year, then plan for the Grand for next year...Plus that gives me a year to find a partner if Loonasea give up on walleye fishing.

Hey Wade, I am sure Steve will sponser you this year. Its his year to win, so its just money back in his pocket. Wright Steve???? LOL!!

Crankin you should sponsor him this year with all the cash you won hand lining last year. wink.gif

By the way after the Slam is over we need to hook up and rig my boat with a couple reels. I have a few ideas I would like to try with them Hand Lines.

I saw your boat at RJ's the other day. Way to pretty a boat to be sitting in that lot. frown.gif Any word on it yet?

Sounds good Steve, Handlining is a great way to catch your smaller fish(under 20.) But your not going to win many tournaments just Handlining. I am more than happy to look at your rig, or if you would like to try it first before you buy, we could arrange something. ITS MIGHT COST YOU!!LOL

So how many guys are "pre-fishing" for this tournament on opening weekend? I'm looking forward to meeting the tournament crew on the water and at Mr. D's. I've probably talked to all of you over smelting or somewhere else fish related. I hope to see you soon.

Ill be "Prefishing" all week long. I have the 1st 10 days of the season off.

Just so people know to check your landings on the river. A few are low or impossible to use for some boats. Take care out there! Waters way down and it dont look like the rain we get will help much. They usually start opening the dam up more a day or 2 before opener but who knows this year.

I've heard that the Oliver landing dosen't have enough water to launch unless your going to carry it in. I'm not sure yet where im going to put the boat in on Sat. morning.

Steve, give me a call if you need a boat partner at all during the week after the opener.

Very low, probably 2 feet lower than last year at ice out.

what do they look like this spring?
    • SkunkedAgain
I might have missed a guess, but here are the ones that I noted:   JerkinLips – March 27th, then April 7th Brianf. – March 28th Bobberwatcher – April…. MikeG3Boat – April 10th SkunkedAgain – early April, then April 21st   Definitely a tough year for guesses, as it seemed to be a no-brainer early ice out. Then it got cold and snowed again.

      No, that wasn't me.  I drive a 621 Ranger.

So, that was you in the camo lund? I'm bummed, I have to head back to the cities tomorrow for a few days, then back up for at least a few weeks. Got the dock in and fired up to get out chasing some crappies till opener!

On the south end...   Lots of ice on the main basin, but it is definitely deteriorating.  Some anglers have been fishing the open water at the mouth of the Rainy River in front of the Lighthouse Gap.  The rest of the basin is still iced over. Pike enthusiasts caught some big pike earlier last week tip up fishing in pre-spawn areas adjacent to traditional spawning areas.  8 - 14' of water using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring has been the ticket.  Ice fishing for all practical purposes is done for the year. The focus for the basin moving forward will be pike transitioning into back bays to spawn,  This is open water fishing and an opportunity available as the pike season is open year round on Lake of the Woods. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. With both the ice fishing and spring fishing on the Rainy River being so good, many are looking forward to the MN Fishing Opener on Saturday, May 11th.  It should be epic. On the Rainy River...  An absolutely incredible week of walleye and sturgeon fishing on the Rain Rainy River.     Walleye anglers, as a rule, caught good numbers of fish and lots of big fish.  This spring was one for the books.   To follow that up, the sturgeon season is currently underway and although every day can be different, many boats have caught 30 - 40 sturgeon in a day!  We have heard of fish measuring into the low 70 inch range.  Lots in the 60 - 70 inch range as well.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  Open water is continuing to expand in areas with current.  The sight of open water simply is wetting the pallet of those eager for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th.   A few locals were on the ice this week, targeting pike.  Some big slimers were iced along with some muskies as well.  If you like fishing for predators, LOW is healthy!
    • Brianf.
Early bird gets the worm some say...   I have it on good authority that this very special angler caught no walleyes or muskies and that any panfish caught were released unharmed.
