You have to be just stirring the pot. I really cant believe you are this in love with Mchale.

You live in Minnesota and it takes a playoff run to even enjoy a team let alone a GM.

I can't believe he let Ratliff off the hook. Minnesota will lead the league in bought out contracts. Make these guys play, we don't owe them anything! What did we ever owe Troy Hudson? Juwan Howard? Theo Ratliff? These are tradeable assets. I'm not advocating for trading them for some long term deal role player stiff that we don't want, but we ought to be able to get draft picks. That's what the media referred to Ratliff as, as an expiring contract!!!

This has completely slipped by the media...McHale nickels and dimes this team to death. Taylor must love throwing his printing and stationary money out the window.

Its hard to trade for draft picks for guys like Howard, Ratliff, Walker, Hudson...there are only 2 rounds in the draft and teams don't like giving them up for a role player that likely won't make that much of a difference.

Nobody is going to give draft picks for these guys when they know they can get them for nothing.

Yeah, especially when we are paying for them, kind of like how Dallas bought out Michael Finley so he could turn around and beat the Mavs every year with the Spurs.

All kidding aside, they should have got something, anything for these guys, or make them ride the pine.

why would you let them ride the pine and become problems.....you have a young squad and the older players are problems when they aren't winning and aren't contributing so get them out the door so they don't taint the rest of the squad

If you are interested in watching a better product of basketball, stray away from the NBA and watch NCAA ball. Its a much better game and a much better watch. IMO

Theo Ratliff could teach Big Al a thing or two about defense. I'm of the opinion that you need a few veterans to teach these guys something.

Walker and T-Hud can go, but Howard and Ratliff could have taught the frontcourt players something. They are tradeable if you really don't want them there.

If they want to pout, sit them down. If they really are a cancer, tell them to stay home. A guy that is that big of a problem will be dealt with by the league or blackballed. To pay a guy to stay at home would be a huge thing in the NBA where players care about their image. A guy sitting at home is losing a lot of face with teammates and the league...he'll close his mouth and play pretty quick. You aren't going to teach a player anything in the NBA by fining him since the money means nothing. But if you take away playing time or tell them to stay home, that's a shot to their pride.

I just don't understand paying a guy's salary so he can play elsewhere for another team for free (relatively speaking) and beat you.

But that's just me. McHale and Taylor are playing with house money. It's not mine to lose I guess. If I was a season ticket holder I'd be disappointed.

Do NBA rules and player assoiciation rules allow you to send a guy home or give him time-out in the corner?

As a businessman...they are buying out these contracts for a whole lot less then if they are to pay them.

They are not giving them the entire contract and then letting them go. I don't beleive it works like that.

tisosy11, depends on your definition of "a whole lot less"

The Wolves are paying 97% of Ratliff's 12 Million dollar contract, Detroit picks up the other 3%

The Wolves are paying 92% of Howards's 15.5 Million dollar 2 year contract, Dallas picks up the other 8%

The Wolves are paying 94% of Hudsons 19 Million dollar 3 year contract, Golden State picks up the other 6%

In the case of Howard and Hudson both G.S. and Dallas are done paying these player's salaries after this year. So essentially G.S. gets Hudson free for 2 years and Dallas gets Howards services free for a year.

Walker somehow missed the train on the buyout. Makes you wonder what he was asking for when the other wolves players got upwards of 92% of their contract bought out.

So you have the wolves subsidizing 3 playoff teams, including 2 within their own conference, and not just for this year, but into 2010. Not a good business decision, and IMO not a good basketball decision either.

is the NBA a good business to be in...one might want to ask Glen Taylor.

The product certainly does not fill the seats...and this after nearly a 50% cut to the price of seats this year (at least for season ticket holders)

Are there more than a handful of teams that continually sell out?

From your numbers - a 2.75 million dollar savings isn't too shabby...it might be table scraps to a guy like Taylor. But its a lot of money.

Isn't it Team policy not to disclose buyout figures? Where did you get your information?

Does the hit to the 'salary cap' stop after this year on these guys?

This year 40% of the team's 69 million dollars in salary are going to players not on the team. I don't feel like crunching the numbers for all 30 teams, but with 3 players bought out, I think its safe to say the Wolves have spent the most money paying players not on their roster.

Guys under contract for longer than this year that have been bought out are still paid for by the Wolves. That's why it was so silly for Dallas to buy out Finley. They are paying 90% of his contract, the second largest (to Garnett) in the league so he can beat them with the Spurs each year.

Team salaries are public information. All salaries are available at HoopsHype

I might have missed a guess, but here are the ones that I noted:   JerkinLips – March 27th, then April 7th Brianf. – March 28th Bobberwatcher – April…. MikeG3Boat – April 10th SkunkedAgain – early April, then April 21st   Definitely a tough year for guesses, as it seemed to be a no-brainer early ice out. Then it got cold and snowed again.

On the south end...   Lots of ice on the main basin, but it is definitely deteriorating.  Some anglers have been fishing the open water at the mouth of the Rainy River in front of the Lighthouse Gap.  The rest of the basin is still iced over. Pike enthusiasts caught some big pike earlier last week tip up fishing in pre-spawn areas adjacent to traditional spawning areas.  8 - 14' of water using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring has been the ticket.  Ice fishing for all practical purposes is done for the year. The focus for the basin moving forward will be pike transitioning into back bays to spawn,  This is open water fishing and an opportunity available as the pike season is open year round on Lake of the Woods. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. With both the ice fishing and spring fishing on the Rainy River being so good, many are looking forward to the MN Fishing Opener on Saturday, May 11th.  It should be epic. On the Rainy River...  An absolutely incredible week of walleye and sturgeon fishing on the Rain Rainy River.     Walleye anglers, as a rule, caught good numbers of fish and lots of big fish.  This spring was one for the books.   To follow that up, the sturgeon season is currently underway and although every day can be different, many boats have caught 30 - 40 sturgeon in a day!  We have heard of fish measuring into the low 70 inch range.  Lots in the 60 - 70 inch range as well.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  Open water is continuing to expand in areas with current.  The sight of open water simply is wetting the pallet of those eager for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th.   A few locals were on the ice this week, targeting pike.  Some big slimers were iced along with some muskies as well.  If you like fishing for predators, LOW is healthy!
    • Brianf.
Early bird gets the worm some say...   I have it on good authority that this very special angler caught no walleyes or muskies and that any panfish caught were released unharmed.
