Foster ice/slush report....

Recommended Posts

Had a chance to fish yesterday mornig at Foster's with Tyler Nick and Nate. What I found out is the ice has about a foot of slush underneath about a foot of snow. Very wet. Try to gateher snow up in a pile and slowly pack it down. That will give you a little platform to stand on to help keep you out of all that water.

Fishing was good for Nick who I saw ice at least 4 trout, but I only caught one brown about 12" or so.

I also found out how much trouble a 4 month old puppy can be. blush.gif

So if you are going to Foster's wear rubber boots!

The slush definately made it a pain to get around. The snow really made it difficult to see old holes as well. I stepped in at least two, so be careful if you are taking young kids out there. I only got a sore ankle out of the deal, but a 8" hole will fit most of a small child.

Was a nice day to be out if you could stay out of the wind. I ended up with 5 trout 3 rainbow (1-13" 2-15") all on a red hook w/ a fathead, and 2 brookies (1-8" 1-12") both on a black jig tipped with spikes. Was good to share the ice with you guys, hopefully we can get out again soon.

I'm hoping to get out to Fosters this week. Where do you find the brook trout out there. I'd like to catch and release a few through the ice.

Nick, you will have to post a pic of the nice brookie you caught. Tyler, Nick, and Dan...we will all have to get out fishing again sometime soon! Maybe a more stable weather pattern will turn the bite on again. I hate to admit it...but I got skunked for the first time this year. I had a couple of opportunities...but I wasn't able to land them. Oh well...it was still a good time.

Went out sunday midday slush was not to bad. Caught three Rainbows (14,17,and 24.5). I almost craped my pants. He got thrown back but it was dang hard. Plus I snaped the line on another nice one. Pink hook with a fat Head was the hot ticket. Caught the 17 on a Orange Flu Flu with a Waxie. Plus I caught more sunnies than i could almost handle. I'm really starting to love this lake. It was the best four hours of fishing i've had in a while. grin.gif

Ah No! The wife doesn't let me out the door with it if it involves hunting and fishing. Due to the high rate of me loosing dispossible cameras. But I'm sneaking the digital out on wendsday. I got it off work to fish and she don't know. I have a hunch theres bigger in there. On aside note the fosters trout got some good tatse to them. Best sunday dinner I've had in awhile.

It was a fun day and a great group of fellas to fish with. Like Nate said, we'll have to do it again. I had a couple bites which might have been trout, but I never hooked a single one. I threw a few sunnies on the ice just to avoid the skunk.

As mentioned above Dan hookend into a nice trout

The slush out there was frustrating. There was all of 3-5" of water on top of the ice. Each and every step was wet and squishy.

I think your right Dan. It appears to have a little "bow" in it. It was a nice fish, and a nice release!

Very low, probably 2 feet lower than last year at ice out.

what do they look like this spring?

I might have missed a guess, but here are the ones that I noted:   JerkinLips – March 27th, then April 7th Brianf. – March 28th Bobberwatcher – April…. MikeG3Boat – April 10th SkunkedAgain – early April, then April 21st   Definitely a tough year for guesses, as it seemed to be a no-brainer early ice out. Then it got cold and snowed again.

So, that was you in the camo lund? I'm bummed, I have to head back to the cities tomorrow for a few days, then back up for at least a few weeks. Got the dock in and fired up to get out chasing some crappies till opener!

On the south end...   Lots of ice on the main basin, but it is definitely deteriorating.  Some anglers have been fishing the open water at the mouth of the Rainy River in front of the Lighthouse Gap.  The rest of the basin is still iced over. Pike enthusiasts caught some big pike earlier last week tip up fishing in pre-spawn areas adjacent to traditional spawning areas.  8 - 14' of water using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring has been the ticket.  Ice fishing for all practical purposes is done for the year. The focus for the basin moving forward will be pike transitioning into back bays to spawn,  This is open water fishing and an opportunity available as the pike season is open year round on Lake of the Woods. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. With both the ice fishing and spring fishing on the Rainy River being so good, many are looking forward to the MN Fishing Opener on Saturday, May 11th.  It should be epic. On the Rainy River...  An absolutely incredible week of walleye and sturgeon fishing on the Rain Rainy River.     Walleye anglers, as a rule, caught good numbers of fish and lots of big fish.  This spring was one for the books.   To follow that up, the sturgeon season is currently underway and although every day can be different, many boats have caught 30 - 40 sturgeon in a day!  We have heard of fish measuring into the low 70 inch range.  Lots in the 60 - 70 inch range as well.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  Open water is continuing to expand in areas with current.  The sight of open water simply is wetting the pallet of those eager for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th.   A few locals were on the ice this week, targeting pike.  Some big slimers were iced along with some muskies as well.  If you like fishing for predators, LOW is healthy!

Early bird gets the worm some say...   I have it on good authority that this very special angler caught no walleyes or muskies and that any panfish caught were released unharmed.
