I had an idea the other day and I wanted to share. I am going to contact the VA reps for both Duluth and Superior and inquire about troops returning from Iraq and Afganistan that are wounded or in rehab that may want to go fishin. I am going to offer my boat and myself to take them. I was hoping to get a "data base" of others willing to provide an empty boat seat to these recent heros.

Any of you interested please contact me.

When you get some info post it, a get together at a lake with some folks willing to make a day of it might be a fun thing to do. I would be up for something of that nature.

I like that idea. Another idea would be to pool some cash and have it used for a 1/2 day of charter fishing on the Big Pond for the heros. I'm looking into myself a possible fly in trip to Canada this summer with my family before my oldest enters the service. I know when I was in I greatly missed the hunting and fishing. Hardly any lakes near FT Sill, Oklahoma and the deer looked like spaniels. A good web site to check out, and I will probably get tagged by the moderators for this, is www.ourguysoverthere.com.

Good idea Wade, count me in. I'm also guessing we might be able to find a few kids that have parents serving over seas that have no one to take them out fishing.

Gentlemen (and ladies),

Every time I watch the news, read the paper, and hear of some terrible story of how the world is going to hell, I come back to this site and thank God for people like you. Life is truly grand, and I THANK YOU all (ahem, even the packer fans) for making the world a better place!!!

Back to lurking...FISH ON!

You guys may want to contact Veterans on the Lake in Ely. They do a lot of disabled vets trips, and possibly could aid in coordinating this effort. Great idea about helping the vets smile.gif We donate all the bait for the St. Cloud vets hospital fishing trip on Fall Lake, and would do the same for any of you that bring a disabled/wounded vet into the Ely area for some relaxation wink.gif. Contact us to arrange it!

PS-Northlander, I'm with you. Packeritis is a mental illness, with no forseeable cure grin.gif

And don't forget to contact Sam Cook at the Duluth News Tribune and the TV news stations in Duluth. They're always looking for stories like this. You should be sure to contact them well ahead of the day/days involved so they have time to plan their coverage, and they may even do a short piece advancing the event/program to increase interest.

Not at all a bad way to put FM in the news, either, though now that the idea's out here for everyone to see, some other group may glom onto it, too. But, of course, we have more fun. grin.gif

A packer ? I thought they became extinct in the late 60's..

Viking, there was some threat of extinction for us back then, but most of us hung around past the late 60s partly because we felt we could win another Super Bowl or two (which we did), and partly because we get so much enjoyment out of watching the Vikings fail on the rare occasions they've made it there. Isn't it four and counting? smirk.gif

And now, back to the topic. Well, no, I suppose now that I've actually had the gall to sass back a Vikings fan, and with the TRUTH, it won't just die there. grin.gif

Sorry Wade about going off-topic.

HAHA, Quess I don't see where I ever stated I was a Viking's fan.

But to get back on topic. I am an Army vet and would glady take a couple of vets out. Let me know the plan.

Sorry Steve, but after that last bit of trash you wrote, I must stay off topic for a bit longer.

Q: How many Packer fans does it take to change a light bulb?

A: Five, one to change the bulb, and the other four to talk about how great the old one was! grin.gifgrin.gifgrin.gif

Viking: Your name says it all.

Great Outdoors:

Q: How many licks does it take a Viking to get to the tootsie roll center of the Super Bowl?

A. A-one, A-two, A-three, A-four, A-five, A-six, A-seven . . .

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?
    • LakeofthewoodsMN
On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭
    • Rick G
Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
