I'm so excited about getting down on the river, it's been along couple months but I'm feeling back to a 100%, now I am more then ready to get going, my boat has been in the shop getting fixed. Looks like the lund predator is getting another season on the water, 21 years of pounding water and it's not over yet. Nine years on the Croix, wow time sure goes by fast! I believe this year will be one filled with memories that will last a life time!

Good to hear you are doing well Walli1. I too am looking forward to a good spring bite. I may have to hit the ice a few times though before it opens up again. See ya on the water. cool.gif

I did alot of shorefishing on the croix last year, water was the lowest I've seen in years. I hope we get alot of rain this spring so I can hit the backwaters for bass and pike. Where's the best spots to find schools of white bass?

Look for bait fish or gulls and you'll be on them, the river has a good population and if you target white bass, your going to catch them. I agree that we need the rain, the river is really low and the forecast outlook doesn't look that great but the weather man is known to be wrong! Pray for rain and bring on the open water!100_2253_009.jpg

I hear ya Walli, can't wait for open water and get the new boat out. Only got to use it once last year. I'm glad you are back to 100%. Maybe we can meet up on the river during opener.

I'm looking forward to hooking up with you again this year, it's going to be a blast! I'll be on the river every saturday and sunday mornings like always, plus a few nights after work. I've found a couple more spots last fall that I've over looked in past years and they produced really well for me. 28 gps spots from the kinni to prescott I have now, seems every year I add a few more gems. Can't wait till open water!! DSC00525.jpg

I gotta tell ya Walli, I sure was praying for you after this falls "incident". I read your posts all the time and want to thank you for your shared knowledge. I LOVE the Croix and have been fishing it for about 7 years now. Can be one of the most beautiful stretches of river and one of the most baffling to fish, all in the same day! I'm so glad to hear your fine and I hope to see you on the water...

First of all Thanks for your prayers, God sure takes care of His kids! I anticipate a really good year on the river, I'm looking forward to the peaceful early morning hours before the sun comes up, I love seeing the sun come up over the banks of the Croix and the mist dancing across the water, its a time to reflect and be thankful for the all the blessings we have, so beautiful! 100_2751-1.jpg

Walli,

Good to hear you're OK... quite a scare last fall, huh?

Anyone interested in a Get-To-Together for opener? I know a bunch of guys on another site (the administrator probably wouldn't let me post it) that have some plans. Post your email address and I'll keep you informed of the plans.

limit for crappie on the Croix is 25, so they may be from elsewhere since he has only 10. grin.gif

Launch North Hudson channel motor over to the mouth of river (willow) pilings/ dam, also access from shore

The limit should be 10!! 25 is way to many 3 guys in the boat in the spring 75??!! Like thats not going to hurt 2-5 days of this. Craps on the croix are good size 2 fish make a good meal for one guy. When I am on the boat myself, friends, and clients follow 10 fish. Hopefully WI will change that some day MN wised up! Just my two cents.

crappie getter,

There are very few times i have gotten 25 crappies on the croix, it is not a big deal because it rarely ever happens. i have had a few spring catches that were over 25 and a few in the winter but not many. Don't you need a WI license to fish the willow river dam off shore? I thought you did? confused.gif

You dont need a Wi license to fish from shore on the St Croix. If your fishing the Willow, then yes you do.The same goes for Wi residence fishing the Croix on the Mn side. The area that is being talked about is good fishing, but in low to normal water levels can be a prop and lower unit eater.Be careful if you havent been there before.

I'm not there, so I can't tell exactly what's going on but it looks like a large area of open water developed in the last day with all of the heavy snow on the east side of wake em up Narrows. These two photos are from my Ring Camera facing north towards Niles Point.  You can see what happened with all of snow that fell in the last three days, though the open water could have been wind driven. Hard to say. .

Black Bay had great ice before but a few spots near rockpiles where there were spots of open water. It looks like the weight of the snow has created a little lake in the middle of the bay.

On the south end...   Thanks to some cold spring weather, ice fishing continues strong for those still ice fishing.  The bite remains very good.  Most resorts have pulled their fish houses off for the year, however, some still have fish houses out and others are allowing ATV and side by sides.  Check social media or call ahead to your favorite resort for specifics. Reports this week for walleyes and saugers remain excellent.   A nice mix of jumbo perch, pike, eelpout, and an occasional crappie, tullibee or sturgeon being reported by anglers. Jigging one line and using a live minnow on the second line is the way to go.  Green, glow red, pink and gold were good colors this week.     Monster pike are on a tear!  Good number of pike, some reaching over 45 inches long, being caught using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring in 8 - 14' of water.   As always, work through a resort or outfitter for ice road conditions.  Safety first always. Fish houses are allowed on the ice through March 31st, the walleye / sauger season goes through April 14th and the pike season never ends. On the Rainy River...  The river is opened up along the Nelson Park boat ramp in Birchdale, the Frontier boat ramp and Vidas boat ramp.  This past week, much of the open water skimmed over with the single digit overnight temps.   Areas of the river have popped open again and with temps getting warmer, things are shaping up for the last stretch through the rest of the spring season, which continues through April 14th.   Very good numbers of walleyes are in the river.  Reports this week, even with fewer anglers, have been good.  When temps warm up and the sun shines, things will fire up again.   Jigs with brightly colored plastics or jigs with a frozen emerald shiner have been the desired bait on the river.  Don't overlook slow trolling crankbaits upstream as well.   Good reports of sturgeon being caught on the river as well.  Sturgeon put the feed bag on in the spring.  The bite has been very good.  Most are using a sturgeon rig with a circle hook loaded with crawlers or crawlers / frozen emerald shiners. Up at the NW Angle...  Ice fishing is winding down up at the Angle.  Walleyes, saugers, and a number of various species in the mix again this week.  The bite is still very good with good numbers of fish.  The one two punch of jigging one line and deadsticking the second line is working well.   Check with Angle resorts on transport options from Young's Bay.  Call ahead for ice road guidelines.

With the drifting, kind of hard to tell for sure, but I'm guessing about a foot and still lightly snowing. Cook end!

How much snow did you get on Vermilion?
    • Mike89
lake here refroze too...  started opening again yesterday with the wet snow and wind...  very little ice left today...
    • Hookmaster
A friend who has a cabin between Alex and Fergus said the lake he's on refroze. He texted me a pic from March 12th when it was open and one from 23rd when it wasn't. 🤯
    • SkunkedAgain
I don't think that there has been any ice melt in the past few weeks on Vermilion. Things looked like a record and then Mother Nature swept in again.   I'll give my revised guess of April 21st

As I get older it's really not just about sending bullets down range.  Some of it's just the workmanship of the gun and the wow factor. The other two guns I have really wanted which I'll never have now because of their price, is a 8mm Jap Nambu and 9mm German Luger.   Just thought they always looked cool!

I had a guy hit me with a lightly used 1969 BAR, he wanted $1650 with an older Leupold scope. More than I think they are worth, I made an offer, he declined end of story.   You know if you look at the old brochures, a grade II BAR sold for $250 in the late 60s, $1650 would be a good return on your investment.    Why would anybody want a 50 year old gun, they are heavy, have wood stocks, and blued metal.  I guess mainly to keep their gun safes glued to the floor. lol   You can probably buy a stainless rifle that you never have to clean, with a synthetic stock you never have to refinish, is as light as a feather, and for half as much money, perfect.   I'm too old for a youth gun, although I've shrunk enough that it would probably fit. lol   No Ruger 10/44s.   Jim
