Aces, Hillmans is super easy to find. Instead of turning left on to Rogers road, just keep going a couple more miles and you will be there. If you are intrested in meeting up, let me know. Good luck

Aces in the Hole-

You guys should make the drive around for the day... even just to meet up at Hillman's Store, meet a few guys, and bs for awhile.

I do have my permanent shack at Roger's Campground and thats where I'm spending the night. I've been fishing on Hillman's Rd out of portables lately as thats where my crappie confidence is. The drive around is not bad at all, plus you can stop into Westwinds or Tall Tales.

Hillman's is pretty easy to find. Go back out to the main road and drive into Waskish. Hillmans will be in town ont he left hand sideof the road. There road is directionly across from the baitshop etc.. Hope you can make it. IF not we'll understand. wink.gif

I'm not even bringing my sleds. Most of the lake is bare ice with sporadic snow drifts. You can drive wherever you want.

Does anyone have an open spot in there sleeper? I go up to red lake hospital once per year for my company to do some work there and it is normally in march. They wanted to do it earlier this year so I am now scrambling to find a sleeper shack for the weekend of Feb 23-25. I am going to be driving up and working on friday till around 4:30 (probably earlier). then plan on staying till sunday morning-afternoon. I have a portable and all of needed gear but am looking for somewhere to hit the hay at night. Give me a call if anyone could spare a bunk! Cell: (612) 730-9285.

Sweet I like being able to drive anywhere in a pickup. How crazy is that Feb. upper red and you can go anywhere with a pickup. Darn it I didn't think to ask last week before I took my sled into the shop oh well it's running good now.

Thanks everyone for the directions to Hilmans. I looked at the map and it isn't far at all from Rogers. We are still trying to decide what we are doing. Looks like rain/snow on Saturday the 24th. Maybe mother nature will cooperate and be sunny and in the 30's. I will have a for sure answer for you guys next week. I hope everyone has a good weekend up there this weekend, I will be on Mille Lacs this weekend trying to catch Jumbos. Again, thanks for the directions to Hilmans!! Hopefully I will see you guys in 9 days!

I guess I don't need to worry about trying to find a place to stay. I have a 16 foot sleeper I am borrowing from a friend. It's a Ice caslte too!! Looks like I am going to be living luxurious for slab fest.

Almost forgot to mention Hanson you can count me in for two. My girlfriend is going to be coming along for her first overnight on the ice fishing trip!! I will have to bring the radios. Also about how far out are you planning on going down Hillmans road? I want to be in the general vicinity since I will have a drop down shack. That way if anyone in the crew needs to come warm up for any un-foreseen reason it won't be too far away.

I'd get out there 5 miles give or take and find an open spot to set the shack. We'll be working that "General" area.

Can't make it this year, have Ottertail plans for that date. Hanson, any idea what date this would take place next year, Feburary 2008? I grabbed a calendar for next year off the web, last Feb weekend is 23rd and 24th. Any idea?

Very low, probably 2 feet lower than last year at ice out.

what do they look like this spring?
    • SkunkedAgain
I might have missed a guess, but here are the ones that I noted:   JerkinLips – March 27th, then April 7th Brianf. – March 28th Bobberwatcher – April…. MikeG3Boat – April 10th SkunkedAgain – early April, then April 21st   Definitely a tough year for guesses, as it seemed to be a no-brainer early ice out. Then it got cold and snowed again.

So, that was you in the camo lund? I'm bummed, I have to head back to the cities tomorrow for a few days, then back up for at least a few weeks. Got the dock in and fired up to get out chasing some crappies till opener!

On the south end...   Lots of ice on the main basin, but it is definitely deteriorating.  Some anglers have been fishing the open water at the mouth of the Rainy River in front of the Lighthouse Gap.  The rest of the basin is still iced over. Pike enthusiasts caught some big pike earlier last week tip up fishing in pre-spawn areas adjacent to traditional spawning areas.  8 - 14' of water using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring has been the ticket.  Ice fishing for all practical purposes is done for the year. The focus for the basin moving forward will be pike transitioning into back bays to spawn,  This is open water fishing and an opportunity available as the pike season is open year round on Lake of the Woods. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. With both the ice fishing and spring fishing on the Rainy River being so good, many are looking forward to the MN Fishing Opener on Saturday, May 11th.  It should be epic. On the Rainy River...  An absolutely incredible week of walleye and sturgeon fishing on the Rain Rainy River.     Walleye anglers, as a rule, caught good numbers of fish and lots of big fish.  This spring was one for the books.   To follow that up, the sturgeon season is currently underway and although every day can be different, many boats have caught 30 - 40 sturgeon in a day!  We have heard of fish measuring into the low 70 inch range.  Lots in the 60 - 70 inch range as well.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  Open water is continuing to expand in areas with current.  The sight of open water simply is wetting the pallet of those eager for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th.   A few locals were on the ice this week, targeting pike.  Some big slimers were iced along with some muskies as well.  If you like fishing for predators, LOW is healthy!

Early bird gets the worm some say...   I have it on good authority that this very special angler caught no walleyes or muskies and that any panfish caught were released unharmed.
