Anyone know how the ice is going out to the A frame or Eagles nest? I'm thinking about heading out there, but I don't know if I should walk, or if it's safe enough for a sled.

Thanks

You might want to ask at Frankies bait. I was on the channel this morning and there was still plenty of ice. They put guard rails up on the south side so if you go to the A Frame you will probably have to go all the way across the lake with a snow mobile or ATV. Gaps in the guard rails are only wide enough to walk out on.

I was out at the A frame today. I measured 7-8" everywhere. Took off from the main access at the channel and kept near shore. Not to say that this is a good measure, but there were tons and tons of tracks leading out that way. Didn't see a guard rail. Where are they?

On the south side by the bay. Zak at frankies said too many drunken idiots were driving out on the lake and I think the torching of the house last year had something to do with it.

yes the guard rails are up, but, you can get a sled through the opening. The local Snowmobile trail goes through right there so they had to leave an opening big enough for the sleds. I am assuming a wheeler can fit too.

Speaking of crazies...There was a car out on Linwood today! It was parked next to our fishing spot. After a few hours, the guy headed down to the access and drove around the barriors and up a small trail to the parking lot. Why....Why...

There was a car on the ice in the channel Wednesday confused.gif and there were other car tracks in the snow! No way it the ice ready for this. If you do not care about your self please care about the person that will have to try to save you.

I thought I saw car tracks out there, almost straight out, was thinking maybe it was a HUGE wheeler or something...

Gotta wonder about people, to lazy to walk, or they just have too much stuff?

Shawnny, 1 eye 9" on a tip up and 8 crappies all under the 9" min. 3 others out there and only saw them get 1 very small eye and did not see them get any crappies. I would say for the long walk not worth it. If you head out keep an eye on the ice open spear hole on the beaten path out.

Just got home from fishing, Ice isn't to bad, it is actually alot better than I thought it was going to be. A good 7-8 inches of ice and we were out by the A-frame. We did manage to get a few really nice crappies and some nice sunfish as well. As soon as 5-5:30pm hit the fishing was on for about 15 minutes and we couldn't keep the lines down they were hitting so fast but after that wave around 5:45pm it just shut off and I tried everything and lots of different combo to get them to bite and nothing would work. Oh well we had fun for a couple of house.

Thanks for the update. How's the snow cover on the lake? All slush, or is there some actual snow out there? I'd like to take the sled out tomorrow with the portable, but I'd rather not if it's nothing but slush.

While I'm at it, how's the shore line? Holding its own, or sketchy?

Thanks!

I was out in the channel checking out the conditions with the sled and saw what looked to be an area of open water where someone may have broken through. It was nearly straight across from the access on the other side of the channel. Anyone konw anything about this? It was open and there were ice chunks around the hole.

Ended up loading the sled up and fished a near by lake for a couple hours. It was slow with only small pannies.

When I was out the lake was pretty much solid frozen up slush. There is no snow at all, whats funny is there was two kids on a polaris IQ Racer and a 03 MXZ snowmobiles and the hifax had to be alittle warm after they were done, because there was no snow for any cooling of the sleds.

That's what it looked like when I was out there, but there were a few patches of snow around the channel. I took it nice and easy and B lined it to every snow spot I could find.

Guess no one knows about the hole in the ice. I wonder what that was.

Does anyone know if there are any thin spots or anything I should worry about out on chisago. I've never fished there and some friends wanted to go this weekend. I was also wondering about how thick most of the ice is. Thanks for any info!!!

Anywhere from 5-8" seem common.. I still would not wheeler or snowmobile. And yes there are thin spots. I dont want to make you scred or anything, but just want you to be safe.. I have not heard of anybody going through on chisago lately.. but North Center has a bit of open water and the lakes are quite similar.

Well I didnt think it would take just one day of these cold temps to put a car on the ice again. I was down to the landing on the channel and saw a Dodge Intrepid off to the right of the landing out by the converted camper. Boy, I feel sorry for all the other people over there with their houses.

Be safe everyone remember there are alot of soft/thin spots still there!

There were cars and trucks all over the south bay tonight about 10.5 inches of good ice 1 or 2 of the frozen slush.

There were cars, minivans, and FULL sized trucks out on South Center this weekend. Appeared to be about 12" of ice just off Sunset point. A lot of permanents went out this past weekend.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
