hitman, I'll be there early with fisherdog getting the perm. setup.

scoot, too bad to hear that you can't make it. sounds like it will be cold as nuts out there. give me or peter a shout sometime if you want to hit HoL another day.

There is a serious lack of snow around here. Unless you have studs, snowmobile travel on Height of Land will be difficult. Mine will be parked in the garage on this trip.

There has been truck traffic on the lake for the better part of a month now. When I was out there two weeks ago there was over 13" of clear ice. I'm sure there is more ice since then. Fisherdog and I will be driving out on Sunday (1/2 ton pickup).

I'd also reccommend bringing a pair of ice cleats if you have them; the ice is really slick.

Well depending how saterday night is i will be there sometime on sunday. More than likly in that 9 am area. I have to do a little work to the fish house, it had a little accident at lake of the woods and a few poles needed to be ordered and they should be here on friday. hitman, fisherdog and I will be out early setting up near the spot where we will fish. We'll probably drive back to the access at 9am to meet arriving folks. you can call me if you want when you get there.

If by some strange stroke of luck we get some snow by sunday morning, I'll bring the sled out of the garage.

Sunday is fast approaching, let's have a final roll call. Don't post after this unless you're letting everyone know if you are going to make it or not. I got a small inside tip on HOL, so we should be able to get on some fish. Making them bite in the first real cold weather of the year will be a different story. I will have my permanent out there all day that guys can use as a warming shack if they get to cold. See you all there laugh.gif.

Fisherdog and I are heading out tonight for grins and giggles. We'll meet up with you guys at the access at 9am. There is a bait store right next to the access. Waxies will be the main bait for pannies and perch, minnows for the pike, although walleyes and pike will hit the waxies.

See you all tomorrow!

I'm not going to be able to make the 9:00 am this morning fish at Height A Land, some things came up, to bad, I wanted to be there, maybe this afternoon I can get out. If not, next time I will be able to be better prepared. I'm sure you all had a great time and caught lots of fish and are enjoying eating them now.

How'd you guys do?

Well let's put it this way. All together if we had to survive as a group off of what we caught it would have been a feast of pannies last night grin.gif BUT, you had to be in the right place at the right time to get a pail full and only one house did that. Myself I learned, once again, sometimes, when I find them I should stay put and wait them out rather then looking for that pot of gold. This was one of those times tongue.gif.

Next weekend the Jamestown Res. grin.gif

It was great to see some of the guys that I haven't seen since last season (Thanks for the chili dog Pete and JP) and to meet some new faces that I see on here. Sorry I missed meeting Mindak Hunter and johnmn. I saw your setups but got caught up in fish huntin before you left.

I think Pete and Noah should fry up that pail full for us next time for lunch on the ice. wink.gifgrin.giflaugh.gif

Let's do this again soon!

Thanks again for all those who made it out yesterday, even though the bite was slow for most of the day, it was fun getting and meeting you guys.

Like Scott, mentioned, Fisherdog ventured out with a buddy and Scott and got into the sunfish near sunset. There were some nice bull bluegills being caught, as well as a nice fat 14" perch that must have pushed 1 lb.

I ended catching at least a dozen northerns and about a half dozen keeper perch at basecamp.

I look forward to the late ice get together, and hopefully more members will be able to make that event!

It was nice meeting/seeing all that attended. When Dead and I woke up early that morning to a rattle reel going off at 7am, and then catching a nice 11+" jumbo, we thought it was going to be a good day by base camp. When 11am hit and the fish were few and far between we contemplated making a move. We didn't really want to move the fish house til we found some fish, and my left shoulder is in quite a bit of pain so I didn't really feel like drilling a ton of holes to find fish. My buddy Noah talked me into it so we ventured out to check a few spots, and ended up not seeing much on the camera. We headed back to base camp for lunch and then he went and fished a small hump, with only a few small fish for his efforts. During this time, ScottND had been out on his own, and when he came back he told us that he caught a few gills, and a nice perch. After lunch we checked a couple more spots with little luck, and decided to go back to where ScottND got some fish. We drilled about a dozen holes until we saw some gills on the cammera, and set up shop in 8' of water. We started fishing a little after 3 and got 2 gills by 4pm, and then it went nuts. In the next hour, we caught about 60 gills averaging 8", and two nice perch in which one was pushing 14" and had to be over a pound. I'm sorry Scott didn't wait it out for he was only 20 feet from us before he left. I wish it could have been a little better fishing for all, but I'm sure the cold weather didn't help. We'll do it again in March, and I'll definately scout a little before hand. Until next time.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?
    • LakeofthewoodsMN
On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭
    • Rick G
Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
