Pout on ice

2 posts in this topic

Here's a report from last nights trip. Started at approx. 5:30 on a flat calm sea. We caught three fish on our first pass...all in approx. 5' of water on ten. shad. As we turned back to make our second pass the water skimmed over. Moved to another location, caught three fish including a 3lb eel pout. Again turned back to make another pass and we were getting iced in. There was a boat coming in at a pretty good speed to the spot we were fishing and there was a loud scrpe and crunch as they hit the patch of ice that was surrounding us. We moved again very slowly as we were fighting through thin ice (not skim ice) I was actually a little nervous driving through this stuff. We then moved in front of twin pines, where there was no ice and trolled for about 30 minutes without a bite. Hit one last spot before we called it a night and caught three more walleyes before that spot started to skim.

The fish are still there and hitting pretty well when you can fish over the quality spots. Our speed was about .6-.9.

With the warm temps this week, I'm hoping for one more trip as it was very frustrating last night fighting the ice formations.

I am definitely in! My boss also gave me permission to start looking at jet boats this spring. We have to get rid of a 3rd car first but I do believe a Lowe 1760 pathfinder with a 115/80 will also be in my future!

Eskimo cs is top notch. I have had 2 different pop-ups and have a 949i now and love it. Wasn't overly impressed with the flip over pop-up at Cabela's though. It seemed to have less room out in front of you than the other flip over from clam and otter.

I recently had a chance to go fishing with my friend who recently purchased a Vexilar fishfinder. However we find it incredibly difficult to identify fish in the Sonar image. We tried even the fish alarm under settings but it didn't work reliably, going off at times with nothing on the Sonar image that looked like fish.   Any tips of what we should be looking for in the Sonar image?

Getting the 6" clam plate hopefully this week. Picked up a brush less 20v dewalt on sale for black Friday. After using moose's drill a couple times last year I am all in on the drill plate!
