All of the small bays are iced over.

A few have been going out from KcKinley Park landing, but still have to break some ice, and the landing ramp is very icy!

Cliff, are the smaller lakes frozen up as well?

I currently have nobody in your kneck of the woods sending in ice reports. If anybody is interested in giving vermilion or any other lake in the area I would really appreciate it.

Thanks

I have been driving by several small lakes on the way to deer hunting spots. Some of them have a very light skim of ice others are still open with just the bays skimmed over

i have seen the same as cliff and yukon...suppose to be 40 degrees or close for the next week...could be a while for safe ice

This has been a very strange year for ice. Black Bay has been trying to freeze up for about 3 weeks now. The ice is still very unsafe. Normally, by the time the main lake skims over as it did this Sunday, Black Bay is very solid. There was only skim ice in some areas of the Partridge River Narrows yesterday afternoon. Be careful!!!

It is supposed to get into the mid 40's to low 50's the next couple of days so most of the ice that we have here will be gone or weakened badly. frown.gif

We have almost 2 inches in front of shamrock as of this afternoon...Greenwood looks very solid with snow on top...

Great news Adam!

Hope it stays cold enough to make a couple more inches of ice!

Well just to update everyone again. Out in front of Shamrock we have 3-4 inches of ice. However, down at the end of bradley road. There is no even 2 inches. Was gonna try to sneak out there to see if anything was biting but not enough there yet. With these temps this week I will probably be fishin off fectos by this weekend. Can't wait.

If this weather would make up its mind it would help. Maybe I should just keep saying I am going hunting or something. That would probably do the trick!!!

Cliff, When we were up last weekend in front of our place the shoreline was still open, and out front of that there was only about an inch of ice. If you go out needless to say you be careful. Even "Aqua Man" would have a tough time with the current water temps. Thanks again for the food. Will have the steaks this weekend. Later, Darrell.

According to the weather channel for Cook\Tower: After today, the temps won't get above freezing for at least the next 10 days with lows in the single digits on most nights. It won't be long now!

You got it !

Why heat the inside of the tub when you don't have to. grin.gif

I'm sure it adds a little more wieght but I don't think the Mag Lodge was ment to be pulled by hand anyway.

The sled and house wiegh 80 lbs, then you add your gear and lunch and your well over a 100 lbs. I don't know about you but a fat old man like me isn't going to pull it very far with or without the deck. grin.gif

Part of what I am thinking is the in and out of the truck, but if it is not attached it could be hauled in and out seperately I suppose.

The deck is bolted to the sled, it's not comming off, even at a 50 mph rollover. shocked.gif

When I built it I was more concerned about durability than wieght so I'm sure it would take 2 poeple to load it into a pick up. cool.gif

what do they look like this spring?
    • SkunkedAgain
I might have missed a guess, but here are the ones that I noted:   JerkinLips – March 27th, then April 7th Brianf. – March 28th Bobberwatcher – April…. MikeG3Boat – April 10th SkunkedAgain – early April, then April 21st   Definitely a tough year for guesses, as it seemed to be a no-brainer early ice out. Then it got cold and snowed again.

So, that was you in the camo lund? I'm bummed, I have to head back to the cities tomorrow for a few days, then back up for at least a few weeks. Got the dock in and fired up to get out chasing some crappies till opener!

On the south end...   Lots of ice on the main basin, but it is definitely deteriorating.  Some anglers have been fishing the open water at the mouth of the Rainy River in front of the Lighthouse Gap.  The rest of the basin is still iced over. Pike enthusiasts caught some big pike earlier last week tip up fishing in pre-spawn areas adjacent to traditional spawning areas.  8 - 14' of water using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring has been the ticket.  Ice fishing for all practical purposes is done for the year. The focus for the basin moving forward will be pike transitioning into back bays to spawn,  This is open water fishing and an opportunity available as the pike season is open year round on Lake of the Woods. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. With both the ice fishing and spring fishing on the Rainy River being so good, many are looking forward to the MN Fishing Opener on Saturday, May 11th.  It should be epic. On the Rainy River...  An absolutely incredible week of walleye and sturgeon fishing on the Rain Rainy River.     Walleye anglers, as a rule, caught good numbers of fish and lots of big fish.  This spring was one for the books.   To follow that up, the sturgeon season is currently underway and although every day can be different, many boats have caught 30 - 40 sturgeon in a day!  We have heard of fish measuring into the low 70 inch range.  Lots in the 60 - 70 inch range as well.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  Open water is continuing to expand in areas with current.  The sight of open water simply is wetting the pallet of those eager for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th.   A few locals were on the ice this week, targeting pike.  Some big slimers were iced along with some muskies as well.  If you like fishing for predators, LOW is healthy!
    • Brianf.
Early bird gets the worm some say...   I have it on good authority that this very special angler caught no walleyes or muskies and that any panfish caught were released unharmed.
