I don't know Mike. I just got back from class and a sizeable lake by the corner of 694 and Snelling was locked up. I wonder how many people are going to fall through this weekend?

I saw that lake Snelling by the airport was completely froze over this morning.

We'll be out soon enough I think. Best part is that there's no snow in the forecast so we should get a good week or two of really cold weather to get a good clear base of ice down before the snow has a chance to muck it all up.

Hey Mike, are you up for some ice fishing next Saturday 12-9?

My drive to work from Alberetbville to St. Louis Park. School/Mud in Alberetville were comepletly froze over, but no fish in thoes lakes. Rice lake in Maple Grove was wide open in the main lake and froze over in the bays west of 94. Eagle looked frozen, but my view was limited. Medicine lake hade ice about 200-300ft out on the south east shore. I think I'll be ice fishing by next weekend.

I know I'll be ice fishing by next weekend somewhere!

I think in 2 weeks we will be able to fish most anywhere if the weather doesnt get crazy again. I hope to find a couple local mud holes with 3.5"+ by early next week near shore.

I am not getting wet for any fish, but the couch is getting boring already!

In all likelihood, I'll be up for it. If the weather stays good n cold, we won't have to venture out of the metro area.

Hey Carp, Cybe said you might venture up with us up to Grand Rapids area for some big pannie action. Are you for real?

I would imagine the hole where you caught the obese bass is probably a good early freezer with the high banks and all. It might be ready by next weekend. I would really like to go up to the Grand Rapids area for the big pannies with Mike and crew; I just need a date to put on my calendar. Are you going up?

Yep. Nothing concrete worked out yet, but thinking sometime early january. As far as the fat bass lake is concerned, I will probably venture out there first, but as you know there are other metro lakes which hold decent panfish smirk.gif

Casey and Carpfisher--Why don't you throw out some dates for Grand Rapids that are good for you. Mike and I are pretty flexible (livin' la vida sola loca). The sooner we set a date the better.

January 6&7th would be my first pick, then the 12&13th, then the 19&20th, etc. I might even be able to swing an extra day off in anyone else would want to.

Cal, I want to do a little exploring as soon as we can on our spring time panfish lake. Might be a hike to the most likely spot but should be worth it. Don't think we'll be able to get to it next week but the week after should be good to go. You and Carp etc up for it? I can do Monday thru Wednesday nights all winter.

Me too, Mark. Tough to find a gill in the heat of summer on that lake, but I reckon we should be able to find 'em schooled up somewhere come 1st ice. I have heard they might be in the hole right out from the landing, so that wouldn't be too bad of a walk at all.

Juggs, that would work especially well for me the 1st week of Jan. I hope we can settle on a weekend quickly so I can arrange things...

Troublehook,

The KSTP forcast says the snow will not be significant, so it shouldn't be a problem. smile.gif

Bass Lake in Plymouth is comletely iced over now. I checked over the the Ice Fishing forum and a fellow claims there is walkable ice on a lake in Andover. I hope nobody gets wet this weekend....

Lake Smetana in Eden Prairie has about 3" close to the launch. I didn't go out very far. I stomped on it and not one crack. So that's good.

The gease have a lil spot open though, well maybe not by now. grin.gif

It's only about 12' at the deepest spot with stunted panfish. But I still wouldn't venture out any where in the metro this weekend. But I will prepare my ice rods and tackle!

I walked out a little on Medicine today (just a little, I'm not dumb) and it was pretty solid on the SE side. I wish I would have had an auger with to check thickness, but it was just a spur of the moment thing. Anyhow, there was ice on 100% of the lake.

Has anyone checked the channel in Chisago? If so how much and when.

I drove around and checked a few lakes over the lunch hour, Medicine had open water on the main lake and a large open area the size of a football field with ducks and geese by the beach-West Medicine Lake Park. Grays Bay is completely frozen and a little shore ice formed in Wayzata. Eagle Lake was mostly frozen, but had some open water in the middle of the north side. I'm gonna try and shoot some roosters tomorrow and see how things are on Grays Sunday afternoon.

I'm suprised no ones fishing the channel on coon lake yet. It seems someone always fishing that before I see whole lakes frozen over. go figure.

I guarantee (Not really, check the dnr site for ice safety) that the narrows on coon are frozen over. I'm guessing that there's around 3-4" out there (on the narrows, channel, whatever you call em'!) Be safe and eat many o' panfish!

Lots of open water on White Bear around the Island, towards yacht club, eagles nest, and Mahtomedi. Out in front of VFW is all ice. I bet within a couple days it will be happening there!!

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
