Just found out a couple weeks ago that I will be spending my 4-day MEA weekend (Oct. 19-22) at school for a search and rescue class. Going to miss the once-a-year trip with dad and uncles to SD for some great ringneck hunting. Just got into pheasant hunting about 3 yrs. ago and I absolutely love it. We hunt with one german short-hair and one german wire-hair. I'm gonna miss seeing those points and hearing that hawk screech. Good luck to anyone heading out that way, shoot a few for me!

Consider yourself lucky that you're only missing four days of the season. I just ruptured my Achille's tendon (completely torn apart) and I'm out for the entire season, NO pheasants, NO grouse, NO whitetails. This just sucks, I've got three excellent well trailed dogs I've been working on all summer. They won't even see a single bird this year. Hopefully I might be walking without crutches by Christmas. Leave some birds for next year!

I think you can get a permit from the DNR to hunt off a wheeler if you want. I know of a guy who was handicapped and he had a dog in to be trained from a trainer I know, to work from both his handicap van and off a wheeler. This dog quartered close to the wheeler for pheasant and grouse and he posted fields while sitting in the van on pheasant drives, the dog sat at heel outside. I thought the trainer told me he got an exemption to be able to shoot from a vehicle...

Good luck!

Ken

Well, got out there this morning. Wind really made things miserable. Ice was about 12 inches. Was still in pretty good shape along the shorelines, although the top few inches were "milky". Ice was really popping and cracking the whole time. Everyone was traveling by foot (which I recommend). Tried for rainbows in the shallows, but couldn't avoid the perch, so I went deep for lakers. Marked one right off the bottom in 115 ft, but other than that, just a couple pods of smelt moved through. Pretty disappointing end to a very forgettable ice season

Had about two hrs to kill today... so I hit one of our local lakes. Ice conditions were pretty good for walking out. Ice has hardened up a bit, still a bit chunky though. Had right around 13inches where I was. Found fish tucked right up in the bullrushes, 2-5 ft. Was able to sight fish to pick of some better ones.

      Any current ice reports?
