There's some great pictures on here. Keep it up! Its great to actually see how everybody's been doing this year. I figure I might as well post my first buck of the year taken in Wyoming.

Quakaddit9, what happened to your buck? Did a critter find it before you? It looks like sheds of hair on the LH side of the pic and seems to have some rear damage. Never-the-less, nice looking buck.

Can I send someone the photo to post for me? Obviously I am computer-challenged!

Nothing too special about this pic. Its my dad and I with the 2 deer he shot Sunday morning.

Dragging deer through the woods is so overrated so we use the canoe! smile.gif

Hanson, I have to disagree with you. The thing that is special about that picture is that it is of you and your dad! N Joy those days while you can because some day, like me, you will miss them. There is bonding that goes on on those trips that only a father and a son can know. I spent the season hunting with my son and we had that bonding going on as well! Take care and N Joy the Hunt././Jimbo

Here's a pic of my buddies and their buck from this year's archery season.

This buck came to a rattling session on November 10th, at 10:00am, and was shot at ten yards. He was thought to be a 10 pointer at the time of the shot but has 12 scorable points. The hunt was captured on video. The hunter is pictured on the left and the cameraman/rattle man is on the right. It was a team effort so they wanted me to post a pic of both of them. The buck scores in the 130's.

I have a picture of a very interesting 12 pointer if someone could be so kind as to post it for me.

Here are pics from coldfeet. First 2 pics are his buck, and the last one is his brothers. I'll let him give the details.

Thanks for putting my pics up BigLakeBa$$

Too long the first time. I edited it for faster reading...

Took him on 11/10 just after 5:00 pm.

Savage .270 WSM with Federal Premium 150gr bullet. Shot three deer with that gun this year and none of them have taken a step after getting hit.

My brother got his out of the same stand 2 days later, same time of day. He was using an old Marlin 30-30 that had belonged to my Grandpa.

Please keep in mind that I do not make a living taking pictures so please excuse my lousy photography.

The reason I am not in either picture with the buck I shot is that I didn’t have anyone there to snap it for me. The deer was also too heavy for me to pose it first.

I took mine in and weighed it and they said it was only 187 lbs. I of course didn't beleive that so I weighed it at work. We have a large floor scale for weighing crates prior to shipping. According to that scale, which is certified and calibrated by MNDOT, it weighed 218. I think the scale was a bit off at the bait shop.

Here is the deer we took on the last Sunday of rifle season! It sure is fun to hunt with others--my boys are 9 and 6.

45 min into the season, I watched a doe slowly work her way into a clear cut. I decided to pass on her, but then this 8-point followed her out and I couldn't pass him up. I knew if I passed on him, they would have been the only deer I saw during the season.

And here is the 8-point (bigger than mine - nice rutted out neck) that my buddy got on the second day of the season. His first deer ever was a respectable 8-point, 175lb dressed buck! Congrats!

Shot Saturday November 11, 2006. 8:30 AM. 30-06 75 yards. He was cruising between two doe bedding areas. No blood trail. Little sign of a hit. Big enough to be alot of work dragging out of swamp (thank God it is a dry year).

Thanks Biglakeba$$ for posting the pic. The first three are of my bothers deer. He shot a 7 pointer at 10:30 monday the 6th. It was working a scrape line by a swamp. The big one is a 13 non-typcial with a 17 1/2 inside spread that he shot about 40 yards from the 7 pointer. It to was working a scrape line. The body of the deer is actually pretty small but the rack is really nice. The 13 he shot at 12:30 2 hours after shooting the 7. We ended up shooting 3 deer and missed/passed up 2 others. The last picture is my cousin who shot this 8 on Sunday the 5th in the morning...came out of a swamp and he took a really good shot on it. Thanks

I'm not there, so I can't tell exactly what's going on but it looks like a large area of open water developed in the last day with all of the heavy snow on the east side of wake em up Narrows. These two photos are from my Ring Camera facing north towards Niles Point.  You can see what happened with all of snow that fell in the last three days, though the open water could have been wind driven. Hard to say. .

Black Bay had great ice before but a few spots near rockpiles where there were spots of open water. It looks like the weight of the snow has created a little lake in the middle of the bay.

On the south end...   Thanks to some cold spring weather, ice fishing continues strong for those still ice fishing.  The bite remains very good.  Most resorts have pulled their fish houses off for the year, however, some still have fish houses out and others are allowing ATV and side by sides.  Check social media or call ahead to your favorite resort for specifics. Reports this week for walleyes and saugers remain excellent.   A nice mix of jumbo perch, pike, eelpout, and an occasional crappie, tullibee or sturgeon being reported by anglers. Jigging one line and using a live minnow on the second line is the way to go.  Green, glow red, pink and gold were good colors this week.     Monster pike are on a tear!  Good number of pike, some reaching over 45 inches long, being caught using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring in 8 - 14' of water.   As always, work through a resort or outfitter for ice road conditions.  Safety first always. Fish houses are allowed on the ice through March 31st, the walleye / sauger season goes through April 14th and the pike season never ends. On the Rainy River...  The river is opened up along the Nelson Park boat ramp in Birchdale, the Frontier boat ramp and Vidas boat ramp.  This past week, much of the open water skimmed over with the single digit overnight temps.   Areas of the river have popped open again and with temps getting warmer, things are shaping up for the last stretch through the rest of the spring season, which continues through April 14th.   Very good numbers of walleyes are in the river.  Reports this week, even with fewer anglers, have been good.  When temps warm up and the sun shines, things will fire up again.   Jigs with brightly colored plastics or jigs with a frozen emerald shiner have been the desired bait on the river.  Don't overlook slow trolling crankbaits upstream as well.   Good reports of sturgeon being caught on the river as well.  Sturgeon put the feed bag on in the spring.  The bite has been very good.  Most are using a sturgeon rig with a circle hook loaded with crawlers or crawlers / frozen emerald shiners. Up at the NW Angle...  Ice fishing is winding down up at the Angle.  Walleyes, saugers, and a number of various species in the mix again this week.  The bite is still very good with good numbers of fish.  The one two punch of jigging one line and deadsticking the second line is working well.   Check with Angle resorts on transport options from Young's Bay.  Call ahead for ice road guidelines.

With the drifting, kind of hard to tell for sure, but I'm guessing about a foot and still lightly snowing. Cook end!

How much snow did you get on Vermilion?
    • Mike89
lake here refroze too...  started opening again yesterday with the wet snow and wind...  very little ice left today...
    • Hookmaster
A friend who has a cabin between Alex and Fergus said the lake he's on refroze. He texted me a pic from March 12th when it was open and one from 23rd when it wasn't. 🤯

I don't think that there has been any ice melt in the past few weeks on Vermilion. Things looked like a record and then Mother Nature swept in again.   I'll give my revised guess of April 21st

As I get older it's really not just about sending bullets down range.  Some of it's just the workmanship of the gun and the wow factor. The other two guns I have really wanted which I'll never have now because of their price, is a 8mm Jap Nambu and 9mm German Luger.   Just thought they always looked cool!

I had a guy hit me with a lightly used 1969 BAR, he wanted $1650 with an older Leupold scope. More than I think they are worth, I made an offer, he declined end of story.   You know if you look at the old brochures, a grade II BAR sold for $250 in the late 60s, $1650 would be a good return on your investment.    Why would anybody want a 50 year old gun, they are heavy, have wood stocks, and blued metal.  I guess mainly to keep their gun safes glued to the floor. lol   You can probably buy a stainless rifle that you never have to clean, with a synthetic stock you never have to refinish, is as light as a feather, and for half as much money, perfect.   I'm too old for a youth gun, although I've shrunk enough that it would probably fit. lol   No Ruger 10/44s.   Jim
