Our group of four shot 11 ducks and a big goose sat. and 11 ducks Sunday - pretty good opener - not the best, but pretty good - mix of gadwalls, BW teal, mallards, woodies, and a spoon bill - we were hoping for more woodies but did not get the opportunity as I think the cold snap sent some of them south - and just didn't have too many of the ones that were around fly by - Central Minnesota

Pretty slow for us, got set up half hour before shooting time and 10 minutes later 8 geese landed infront of us. They would start swimming away, I'd give them a cluck cluck, they would swim over and look around, start swimming away, then I'd cluck again and they would come back. This went on for 20 minutes untill shooting time at which time we stood up, took aim and unleashed the fury on them.

We didnt drop a one.

Oh well, we got some good shooting in on some teal and had some mallards work the dekes so it wasnt bad, we shot 4 the first day. I was pretty happy about that until I talked to my uncle and his buddies that shot 27 ducks a few miles away from us. They just werent using the pond we were on. Maybee later in the year but for now looks like we got some scouting to do.

Another buddy I talked to said his group shot 13 the first day. So someone can tell Dennis Anderson that there are ducks in minnesota.

Two mallard and two teal Saturday, four teal on Sunday. Birds were in the air but stayed away from our end of the lake. Ended up walking potholes and jump shooting. Not much shooting around us Saturday but Sunday was busy.

Lots of mixed reports coming in here.

We could have possibly had one of the best opening weekends ever if we were shooting a little better. blush.gif

I did an experiment this year with the decoys, we added a bunch of canadian geese to the spread. There is a point in the lake we like to hunt and set up on the leeward side of it with 8 Flambeau goose floaters on the left side in the corner of the bay, a dozen flocked GHG floaters in front of the blind with about 6 mallards mixed in with them. Off to the right we put out another 6 mallards with a dozen bluebill dekes heading out into the wind off the point.

It worked. We had all sorts of birds working upwind and trying to land between the geese and the bluebill dekes. I forgot how fast a flock of bills moves and missed plenty of them.

We hunted opening day for about 2 hours and then Sunday morning for another 3 hours or so and bagged 2 big honkers, 2 drake mallards, 3 blue wing teal, and another 5 ringbills for 3 guys.

I'm going to have nightmares for awhile as I missed a 15 yard or less shot on a big goose about 3' off the water with his feet down. I don't know what happened. I think I may have had too much confidence in the shot and just expected him to tumble. Oh well. Just don't ask me why I only had 1 shell in the gun! blush.gif Its not a good feeling when you hear 'click' on your second shot!

As for the experiment with the goose decoys, the ducks did not seam to be affected at all by all the goose decoys. In fact, I'm sure it helped. As a bonus though, darn near every loner or pair of honkers locked into those dekes from across the lake and came in on a rope without any calling. We popped 2 of the loners, I missed a gimme, and we had 2 separate pairs land about 15 yards outside of shooting range. We also had some problems with geese locked and coming in when either my dad or buddy was out in the decoys picking up ducks in the boat. Doh! They always come at the wrong time.

All in all, it was an awesome weekend. Seamed to be kind of a "typical" opening weekend with smaller flocks, and a variety of different birds as well.

We ususally throw in some honkers with our spread and it works will...

The 10 floaters I did have got stolen, so this year I was SOL. We didn't get a lot of birds, but did see a lot.

5 man limits of honkers both days.....a mix of 20 ducks about half mallards and half teal......also picked up a banded mallard, overall it was a real fun weekend.

Overall I would say duck numbers were fairly dissapointing just in numbers of birds flying around....

Went out to the ole opener honey hole and shot 7 mallards, two woodies, 7 teal, 4 geese for 4 guys. Went back to the same marsh and shot 8 mallars, 1 wigeon, 3 woodies and 4 teal on sunday. I'll take that for opener any time.

Four nice drake wood ducks and three teal on Sat and two wood ducks and a mallard on Sun for two guys. Missed a few easy shots but ended up having some good shooting. Our four partners on a different slough got only three ducks all weekend!

Sunday we bagged only two BWT, could or should have had a lot more.

Putting out the dekes on Sunday morning and had two ducks try to land on my head, they did land just outside the rice line, out of range. Had four more try to do the same thing 2 minutes later. We hustled to the blind and didn't see another bird. They seemed to have flocked up on Sunday, we saw lots of bunches flying high and fast. They were not interested in the decoys. Great weekend over all. We built our first duck blind on Friday and set it on shore, camoflauged it and had a nice place to sit and watch ducks. We also put out some Goose floaters, I set out two pair to the left and down wind, they seemed to pull the ducks in, I guess they can see them better.

Our lake had no presure from other hunters so it was kind of slow, nice to be out though.

"I'm sure somebody will bring this up, so I may as well be him. I'm pretty sure that party hunting for ducks is a no no. By that I mean you not suppose to fill other people's limit. Personally on the ethics side of it..I'm not bothered...between two people 8 ducks were harvested no matter what...but dems da rules. Get ready for backlash."

i have to agree we all need to review the laws.

its great to want to take your kids, but there are

age requirements also.....(12 and a gun safety certificate)

my 12 year old daughter had to wait, as did i.

by the way she got 2 woodies and a green head On sunday.

In MN you can small game hunt at any age. I took my boys at 10 and 11 when they are 12 they must have gun saftey to continue to hunt. Strange rules. They are 19 and 17 now

Another "typical" mn opener for us in the akeley/park rapids area. On the way out to the blind we flushed some birds off the lake we were hunting and never saw them again. Shot once on saturday morning, not at duck, but at a dove and missed. Saw some birds but they would not even give us a look. Sunday had a group of three bw and gw teal come in, dropped all three. HOORAY I got to fire at a duck! A large flock of geese came over the dekes after that and I managed to bag one of those. A lot of work for very few chances. Only 3 weeks till North Dakota thank god.

Saturday: West of the metro, two guys, two dogs on a smaller lake. Didn't get a great vibe by the fact that we were there before sun-up and didn't have ducks buzzin' around our heads, although there were lots of local geese. Had it been a sunrise opener we would have had to shoot poorly to not get our 4 geese. Come shooting time the geese had gone out and when they came back they all went for the lawn with live decoys on the other side of the lake. We ended up with 3 woodies, a ruddy and a goose. Wish I could say we had more opportunities but we only whiffed on a group of 3 teal. Packed it in at 1:00.

Sunday: same place with the girls and suntan lotion!

Many of these reports sound promising. I suppose location may have a lot to do with it, but I know in my area, the numbers have been horrendous for a good 7 years. I really wasn't expecting to get much this opener. For the past 5 years we've got more geese than ducks. But finally this year we saw flocks of ducks flying here and there....not everywhere as in the past, but here and there which is better than nowhere! I'm no biologist and don't pretend to be one, but I wonder why we saw an increase in duck numbers this year? Especially the bw teal....haven't seen that many around in MORE than 10 years! Was there a good hatch this year? Good nesting conditions this year? Are efforts by the DNR and waterfowl groups (i.e. - Ducks Unlimited) finally paying off? I hope whatever the case may be, it's towards the positive.

I was as lucky as I've ever been... three shots and three ducks... a Woodie drake and Hen...and a Greenhead drake. I'm getting a double mount done with the Woodies on driftwood. One Goose as well, they weren't coming in too close unfortunately... the sky was also very high Sunday morning.

I'm thinking the wet spring had something to do with it. In my area there was good nesting conditions, and I think the little quackers took advantage of it. Haven't seen that for a few years.

i have believed my father all these years him being a retired cop he said he would never take anyone hunting that didn't have a certificate. i didn't realize that that was his law.

i'll have to thank him for baiting the crow and myself for shooting and eating it.

We did OK, nothing like last year. 14 total 8 saturday, 6 sunday. Saturday we got 4 mallards and 4 green wing teal. Though the teal were pretty crazy, my dad got 4 teal in 2 shots. Sunday we got 3 mallards, 2 bluewing teal, and believe it or not a bluebill.

iamgmc,

Yep, all shots were from the air. My first shot of the year resulted in the "double teal". The next two shots were on two mallards.

Well the opener has come and gone with some birds taken and others missed. Total count for my group was down from previous years 9 mallards 5 teal and a goose. We saw a bunch of mallards but it looked like the woody's were down in the area we hunt.

We ended up with 22 ducks and 5 geese for our group of 6 guys in SW MN. Been going for 7-8 years and I have never gotten a goose (usually only get 1 in our group all weekend), and Saturday morning I got a double on a flock that came in and my buddy got one and then his gun jammed (should have dropped all 4). We both shot one more Sunday morning. Ducks were mainly malards and teal with a few woodies mixed in. Had chances at more but ya know how that goes!!! blush.gif

Started out with 6 hunters, 2 of them had to leave early for get this a "GOLF" outing. They took one woodie and 3 mallards. The rest of us wound up with 13 birds in hand. Three woodies the rest mallards. Saw as many birds as last year I'd say in the neighborhood of 600 mallards, woodies and teal all loafing in a pasture with a pond. Did not hunt Sunday. Nice to have a private spot with this kind of action. Hunting should be good until freeze up.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?
    • LakeofthewoodsMN
On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭
    • Rick G
Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
