Cass Lake Poker

10 posts in this topic

What is the best place for some Texas Holdem? Who has the most players and biggest stake games going? Any tournaments?

I will be up fishing 10/6-10/9.

Dave,

Unfortunately, the casino in Cass Lake has decided to take out the poker room. What a drag. We go up there for two weeks each year at the end of July and first week in Aug and I was very dissapointed to find this out this year. They have replaced the poker room with three card poker and blackjack tables. I did find some good games at the Northern Lights casino in Walker which if you do not know is only about 21 miles from Cass Lake. You just take the road past Froggys Bait Shop all the way into and thru the town of Walker and you will hit the Northern Lights casino on your left side.

Funny story real quick this year I sit down with my usual $100 at the $3/$6 table and the first hand I get dealt pocket rockets, the guy two to my left gets pocket queens and I take him and the table for about $60. I was just smooth calling and didn't raise till the river. The next hand I get 8-5 off suit and I bet, raise and re-raise like there is no tomorrow and I bluff the same guy off the hand at the turn for another $45 and to boot, I show him my bluff after he folds! The third hand I get pocket queens and the same guy has big slick. The flop comes up A-K-Q and I take him down for about another $50! In three hands I am up over $150 and the guy gets up and leaves the room after that hand. The rest of the guys just bust out laughing after he was out of ear shot. Funny stuff.

Unfortunately, my wife loses about $75 of my winnings at the one armed bandits but that still left us enough for a good dinner at one of then nicer restaurants in Walker that night! Got to love a good poker story. Try out the Northern Lights, not a bad poker room for an indian casino. It's not Vegas but it ain't too bad. Good Luck, Windy.

White Oak Casino in Deer River, on US Hwy 2, has a poker room too.

Tofish,

How far it that from Cass? I'm not too familiar with Deer River.

Take Hwy 2 East out of Cass Lake about 25-30 minutes... just past Big Winnie... the intersection of Hwy 46 and Hwy 2...

Good Luck!

Windy,

You must be going up through the TC if you don't know Deer River. We go up through Duluth and take 2 West and almost always stop to eat in Deer River. Try it, you'll likes it!

Geno,

We used to go up through MN but found that the Cheesehead route was easier on towing the boat. I just never really paid much attention to Deer River and how far it was to Cass but I think now that you mentioned it I do remember a little casino. Isn't it about 45 miles or so from Cass? We still like to go into Walker to hit some of their restaurants. The Zona Rosa is a Mexican place that is outstanding for MN standards.

Me and the Mrs. usually hit Walker the first week up there by ourselves and do the casino for a few hours and then dinner.

We usually go into there on the second week with the entire IL troops, about 23 of us and the women do the shopping thing, hitting all the stores and then getting some fudge before heading back to Cass. The guys usually hit Reeds for a while and then head down to The Wharf. We call it the Pelican bar and they have free popcorn, ice cold brews and bar food. Their nacho platter is pretty good and their cheese curds are to die for.

So we will probably keep going to Walker when I get the jones for some Texas Hold Em since it is only about 20 miles past Froggys. Talk to you later, this is getting me all pumped up for Cass 2007 but we have 10 MONTHS TO WAIT! ARGHHHHH

Hey Tofish,

Rockford, I think I spent a week in Rockford one night! (rim shot please) But anyway, try the veal, I'm here all week! Kidding.

The last time I was in Rockford, not on my way to Cass, I think I was at the Rockford Speedway seeing REO Speedwagon and The Cars. Now that will date me! I went to college with a few guys from Rockford. My fellow Huskies used to speak highly of their home town, but then again, they used to drink a lot! Talk to you later, Windy

Spent time at a few of those concerts myself!!!cool.gif

Hey Rockford's a decent town to raise a family. It just doesn't have enough outdoor recreational facilities as Bemidji does...if you know what I mean! LAKES, LAKES and more LAKES!!!!grin.gif

Well I ended up picking up the Cabelas zone specialist on sale for $160 plus I had a coupon in the mail for 20 off A $150 purchase
Picked up a new chair and a power owl call ( Im pretty sure I can call better with no call than that thing) I had a 200 gift card so I walked out of there with 17.00 credit
Not bad I say I really liked the blind I sat in them all that were set up with my chair and I grabbed a bow from the archery department. I know people will probably disagree but dare I say from what I seen I like it better than the bullpen even.
It seems to me to be made of a good material too and I can see it lasting awhile as I will take care of it and I am not going to leave it out for days on end. We will see how it is to hunt out of soon.

I love my 6 inch K Drill however the blades seem to dull faster to me once I figured it out. Happy as a clam. I do regret selling my power auger. I bought a 8 Eskimo power auger for when I go to Mille lacs. the K drill will work just fine but I liked having the 8 inch hole for eyes up there harder to turn there head in a six inch hole. I know you can drill 2 holes together but for me it just worked. Short story Rick G is right on I love my K drill. Would recommend to any one and it's so much lighter when runnin and gunnin.

Just wanted to share info on what I know about how those USGS stream gages work.  The stream gaging station will not reflect accurate readings of stage and discharge while ice cover is present.  If you are looking at USGS stream gages you will see a little note in the data table that says "Ice Cover" if this is the case.  They won't be useful until the ice is gone and "Ice Cover" is not showing up next to the readings.  They work on water pressure to estimate the height of water above the gage.  More water flowing under the ice creates more water pressure, so makes the estimated gage height and corresponding estimated discharge go up.  The USGS gage at Manitou should be accurate (no ice cover).  The higher flow will draw the fish in better than low flow.  Another good one to check is the LWCB gages for Rainy Lake and the tailrace below the dam(s).  That will help determine if it's the Forks affecting water levels or just more water coming out of Rainy, which is nice and clear.  Hopefully it won't get muddy!  Maybe see you out there DucksnBucks.  T-Rock-1.

I saw teal for the first time this morning.  I've had 8 drake mergs hanging around the house for at least a week.  Ringnecks have taken their place for about the past week.  The goldeneyes came and went pretty quick.   I heard snows last night.  Other guys reported the same this morning.  One person reported a flock of Ross' geese last night.  Too bad they don't show a hint of setting down around these parts.   Ive heard woodies but can't say I've actually seen one.  And my wood duck house appears to still be empty.  There was a No Vacancy sign on it by this time last year.   In all, I'm seeing the usual suspects but I have to say the numbers are less than last year.  I hope that's just due to there being more open water all around than last year.
