The goal of the hunt is to significantly thin the herd. Where the hunters live isn't as important as meeting the goal.

83 walleye, don't even go there. There are a bunch of people from Mn hunting over here in Superior. It dosn't matter where your from. Its about reducing the deer car accidents.

Sounds like the right way to look at the situation. Population control is first and foremost.

They are all in the arlington ave zone. Seen 2 really nice bucks and a lot of does up in the old dog training place. One is a good 10 and the other may be a 12 or 13.

Hey steve guess were i'm hunting...arlington. I've got pics of some beauties and there have been some monsters sighted. I've heard through the grapevine that a guy downed a 170" 10 pt on the opposite side of the road from me but his buck was with a bachelor group of five with the smallest being a 140" deer. The third biggest deer was killed in my zone last year but two bigger ones were seen just out of range. I like this city hunt. cool.gif One more doe to go and then one of the big boys.

I heard that there was a monster 16 pointer hanging out over by the K-9 thing also. Young guy stopped by the shop with a really nice 9pter from the city hunt yesterday.

The 10 is all over the place lately. Or there is more than 1 nice 10 but Im sure its 1 deer.

The big one I usually only see every once on a while and usually standing very close to or in some cover. For sure a buck of a lifetime. I think it may even have a drop.

Before all the construction on the dang 911 building we had nice deer all over because we had a lot of nice wood and gardens. Now all we see in our work yard is little does.

Here's pics of the two 'shooters' I've got with the trail cam. I guess someone across arlington from me shot a 170+ 13 pointer. There's more where he came from though.

This last one is a pic of a buck from the St. Scholastica area.

I'm hunting between central entrance and trinity along arlington road. My buddy's lady friend killed a nice 8 pointer tonight. This is her first year bowhunting and her first buck down. She might even be so lucky as to have an article in outdoor life (I think). I went home and they were off for a photo shoot. Tom let's see some pics of your 'shooters' tongue.gif

Who can hook me up with some FM decals for my truck?

Tom that's good you passed up the ground shot. It's tough to do but it's right (for those who don't know all shots fired must be from 12 feet or higher off the ground within city limits). I'm hoping for bigger...alot bigger and I know they're there but if one of those two walks by they are doomed. I think it'd be neat too since I have a pic of each while alive and that'd look nice in a frame by the shoulder mount. I'll get a big boy and so will you. How big can we go though before it's all done? I don't want to eat my buck tag. You should bring a digital camera with and turn off the flash and sound and try to get some pics.

Here's one that turned out dark even though I used the flash. It was still plenty light to legally shoot if I had wanted to just didn't turn out. You can kinda make out his rack though. Just a little guy.

I'm not there, so I can't tell exactly what's going on but it looks like a large area of open water developed in the last day with all of the heavy snow on the east side of wake em up Narrows. These two photos are from my Ring Camera facing north towards Niles Point.  You can see what happened with all of snow that fell in the last three days, though the open water could have been wind driven. Hard to say. .

Black Bay had great ice before but a few spots near rockpiles where there were spots of open water. It looks like the weight of the snow has created a little lake in the middle of the bay.

On the south end...   Thanks to some cold spring weather, ice fishing continues strong for those still ice fishing.  The bite remains very good.  Most resorts have pulled their fish houses off for the year, however, some still have fish houses out and others are allowing ATV and side by sides.  Check social media or call ahead to your favorite resort for specifics. Reports this week for walleyes and saugers remain excellent.   A nice mix of jumbo perch, pike, eelpout, and an occasional crappie, tullibee or sturgeon being reported by anglers. Jigging one line and using a live minnow on the second line is the way to go.  Green, glow red, pink and gold were good colors this week.     Monster pike are on a tear!  Good number of pike, some reaching over 45 inches long, being caught using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring in 8 - 14' of water.   As always, work through a resort or outfitter for ice road conditions.  Safety first always. Fish houses are allowed on the ice through March 31st, the walleye / sauger season goes through April 14th and the pike season never ends. On the Rainy River...  The river is opened up along the Nelson Park boat ramp in Birchdale, the Frontier boat ramp and Vidas boat ramp.  This past week, much of the open water skimmed over with the single digit overnight temps.   Areas of the river have popped open again and with temps getting warmer, things are shaping up for the last stretch through the rest of the spring season, which continues through April 14th.   Very good numbers of walleyes are in the river.  Reports this week, even with fewer anglers, have been good.  When temps warm up and the sun shines, things will fire up again.   Jigs with brightly colored plastics or jigs with a frozen emerald shiner have been the desired bait on the river.  Don't overlook slow trolling crankbaits upstream as well.   Good reports of sturgeon being caught on the river as well.  Sturgeon put the feed bag on in the spring.  The bite has been very good.  Most are using a sturgeon rig with a circle hook loaded with crawlers or crawlers / frozen emerald shiners. Up at the NW Angle...  Ice fishing is winding down up at the Angle.  Walleyes, saugers, and a number of various species in the mix again this week.  The bite is still very good with good numbers of fish.  The one two punch of jigging one line and deadsticking the second line is working well.   Check with Angle resorts on transport options from Young's Bay.  Call ahead for ice road guidelines.

With the drifting, kind of hard to tell for sure, but I'm guessing about a foot and still lightly snowing. Cook end!

How much snow did you get on Vermilion?
    • Mike89
lake here refroze too...  started opening again yesterday with the wet snow and wind...  very little ice left today...
    • Hookmaster
A friend who has a cabin between Alex and Fergus said the lake he's on refroze. He texted me a pic from March 12th when it was open and one from 23rd when it wasn't. 🤯
    • SkunkedAgain
I don't think that there has been any ice melt in the past few weeks on Vermilion. Things looked like a record and then Mother Nature swept in again.   I'll give my revised guess of April 21st
