Anyone else doing the city bowhunt for Duluth? I'm seeing lots of deer and some big bucks. The stand is hung and I'm pumped for saturday.

This will be my first full bow-season living in Duluth after missing almost all of last year getting ready to move. The scouting is done, one stand is up and a few other spots in the Duluth city hunting area are marked on the GPS. Hopefully a few deer are left by next Monday afternoon which is going to be my first time on stand for the season. Here's hoping everyone has a safe and successful hunt this weekend. SHOOT THOSE DOES!! Can't wait for the first meal of fresh venison. 'sgonna be GOOD!

I also will be ready for the big hunt. The stand is up and and there is a monster that i have seen twice. So hopefully a doe in the A.M, and the big boy in the evening. Good luck to everyone, and be safe.

Nice to see you guys ready, Tom

I did not see your name on the land owner sheet today, so you should get that in, as fas as your problem, on Tuesday

The ABA, City police,DNR and CO's will meet to discuss proper protocall, with so many invloved agencies we need to have a detailed plan.

So my guess is you have a tresspasser this may be handled by the land owner calling city police, probabaly the same for the feed and if there is someone sitting in the stand we may have the CO's look into it.

So keep in touch we'll get it fixed before the hunt!

Good to see others from the site geared up for the city hunt. I'm so ready for this season. I've got all sorts of spots to relocate if I need to but for now I have all the does I can stand coming right through my lanes and there's so many bucks it's unreal. A few in the 130's to 150's that have caught my eye but I know there's bigger...way bigger. I've captured many pictures of people on my trail cam along with the deer and i'm thankful none of them came back with a saw or bolt cutters to steal it. Guys, I definately have the fever.

I just sold my fish house to a guy who got a 230# eight pointer on Sun. Saw the deer on the news, it looked like a long horned steer.

Someone got a monster eh? Where might I find pics of this deer? We've got a few deer but this weather is really hurting the deer movement I think. The cold is nice but the rain and wind can head out soon. If anyone starts getting some bucks maybe post the pics here?

I just developed some trail cam pics and on the 12 pictures that were developed there were 6 different P&Y bucks. The two shooters arean 8 that probably goes 150+ and a 10 that is also in the 150's. The 8 has it all though...mass, main beams, height, spread...everything is huge. 150 is being conservative. I've got two deer tagged so far and we've gone 16 for 6 guys. It's time for the bucks...too bad every pic is at night. Tom, sorry I couldn't get to the phone the other night. It was in my truck as we were cutting up meat. Hope things worked out for ya and fishing was good as well.

Mr. Pfister,

If the private land you are referring to is the Oneota Cemetery property in the northwest corner of zone 7A then I am the (Contact Us Please) who bungled into that area. I misread the map and got the stand hung, found a nearby stand near mine, investigated it, then got a call from Kim Gerard a few days before opener informing me of my mistake which I quickly corrected by removing my stand completely out of Oneota's property. I apologize for my mistake. What about "they are feeding deer"? Did you find bait in the area? I can assure you that it did not come from me as I have always been a "by the book" bowhunter and wouldn't stoop to illegal baiting.

Anyway, hope you have succesful hunting. I've harvested a doe fawn and an adult doe so far. Haven't seen anything over a spike buck to date. Best of Luck to all!

I will just chime in quick and say that I am in the hunt also. With me working road construction I have only been able to get out twice. Yesterday and last Sat. and I think we all remember that nasty weather last weekend. I didn't see anything. I almost had my anterless down yesterday but of course it stood in the only place that I couldn't shoot, but saw 5 total (does and fawns) but nothing else close enough. Good luck guys! I will be in stand all weekend coming up, so I hope to connect!

I would like to say it happens but what is private and hunt-able land we should know where we are???? well good hunting to you as well there was corn out 20 yards from your stand ??? I felt some one was in the wrong ? I was glad you did not put it there but it was there the DNR would not let me hunt there for ten day's after the corn was gone that stink's for me but the rules are as they read shocked.gif. I hope every one has good hunting I am three for five on buck and a doe to go smile.gif

Hey Tom P.,

Totally agree with you, I should have been more careful about where I put my stand, I was under the mistaken impression that the entire zone was public (should have known better) and put my stand in a decent looking spot. I intended to, but did not, get the plat book to be certain about where I was placing my stand when I put it up. As soon as I was able to, the next day after being notified that I was in the wrong, I removed the stand from the area. Again, I apologize if my error has effected your hunting in any way and swear that I won't let it happen again. It soundz like the placement of the corn has affected your hunting. I, too, would like to find out who did that and point the DNR in their direction. No tolerance for non-legal tactics in this hunt, especially with the attention being paid to all Duluth City Bowhunters by the Duluth City Council and the general public. We need to police our own.

Best of Luck to all bowhunters!

Tom B.

What's with all the non-Duluth residents participating in the city bowhunt? I thought the hunt was just for Duluth residents?

I'm not there, so I can't tell exactly what's going on but it looks like a large area of open water developed in the last day with all of the heavy snow on the east side of wake em up Narrows. These two photos are from my Ring Camera facing north towards Niles Point.  You can see what happened with all of snow that fell in the last three days, though the open water could have been wind driven. Hard to say. .

Black Bay had great ice before but a few spots near rockpiles where there were spots of open water. It looks like the weight of the snow has created a little lake in the middle of the bay.

On the south end...   Thanks to some cold spring weather, ice fishing continues strong for those still ice fishing.  The bite remains very good.  Most resorts have pulled their fish houses off for the year, however, some still have fish houses out and others are allowing ATV and side by sides.  Check social media or call ahead to your favorite resort for specifics. Reports this week for walleyes and saugers remain excellent.   A nice mix of jumbo perch, pike, eelpout, and an occasional crappie, tullibee or sturgeon being reported by anglers. Jigging one line and using a live minnow on the second line is the way to go.  Green, glow red, pink and gold were good colors this week.     Monster pike are on a tear!  Good number of pike, some reaching over 45 inches long, being caught using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring in 8 - 14' of water.   As always, work through a resort or outfitter for ice road conditions.  Safety first always. Fish houses are allowed on the ice through March 31st, the walleye / sauger season goes through April 14th and the pike season never ends. On the Rainy River...  The river is opened up along the Nelson Park boat ramp in Birchdale, the Frontier boat ramp and Vidas boat ramp.  This past week, much of the open water skimmed over with the single digit overnight temps.   Areas of the river have popped open again and with temps getting warmer, things are shaping up for the last stretch through the rest of the spring season, which continues through April 14th.   Very good numbers of walleyes are in the river.  Reports this week, even with fewer anglers, have been good.  When temps warm up and the sun shines, things will fire up again.   Jigs with brightly colored plastics or jigs with a frozen emerald shiner have been the desired bait on the river.  Don't overlook slow trolling crankbaits upstream as well.   Good reports of sturgeon being caught on the river as well.  Sturgeon put the feed bag on in the spring.  The bite has been very good.  Most are using a sturgeon rig with a circle hook loaded with crawlers or crawlers / frozen emerald shiners. Up at the NW Angle...  Ice fishing is winding down up at the Angle.  Walleyes, saugers, and a number of various species in the mix again this week.  The bite is still very good with good numbers of fish.  The one two punch of jigging one line and deadsticking the second line is working well.   Check with Angle resorts on transport options from Young's Bay.  Call ahead for ice road guidelines.

With the drifting, kind of hard to tell for sure, but I'm guessing about a foot and still lightly snowing. Cook end!

How much snow did you get on Vermilion?
    • Mike89
lake here refroze too...  started opening again yesterday with the wet snow and wind...  very little ice left today...
    • Hookmaster
A friend who has a cabin between Alex and Fergus said the lake he's on refroze. He texted me a pic from March 12th when it was open and one from 23rd when it wasn't. 🤯
    • SkunkedAgain
I don't think that there has been any ice melt in the past few weeks on Vermilion. Things looked like a record and then Mother Nature swept in again.   I'll give my revised guess of April 21st

As I get older it's really not just about sending bullets down range.  Some of it's just the workmanship of the gun and the wow factor. The other two guns I have really wanted which I'll never have now because of their price, is a 8mm Jap Nambu and 9mm German Luger.   Just thought they always looked cool!

I had a guy hit me with a lightly used 1969 BAR, he wanted $1650 with an older Leupold scope. More than I think they are worth, I made an offer, he declined end of story.   You know if you look at the old brochures, a grade II BAR sold for $250 in the late 60s, $1650 would be a good return on your investment.    Why would anybody want a 50 year old gun, they are heavy, have wood stocks, and blued metal.  I guess mainly to keep their gun safes glued to the floor. lol   You can probably buy a stainless rifle that you never have to clean, with a synthetic stock you never have to refinish, is as light as a feather, and for half as much money, perfect.   I'm too old for a youth gun, although I've shrunk enough that it would probably fit. lol   No Ruger 10/44s.   Jim
