We got 17 on saterday. They fianlly decoyed very nice and we did some decent shooting for once to knock down some birds. It was a fun and exciting hunt that didn't take too long. Cant wait for this weekend.

Had our limit of 15 honkers, along with 5 mallards and a wigeon by 7:30 a.m. Roughly half the geese were giants, and ended up shooting 2 with some jewelry on them. Haven't had a shoot like that in a looong time and it was a blast. Trying to figure out how to get the pics on here, but no luck. Any info appreciated.

Umm...... blush.gifMallards, a wigeon, Fish&Fowl, im pretty sure that duck hunting hasn't opened yet here in minnesota, if i am correct it opens the last weekend in September. I hope you were hunting somewhere else.

That was the same thing that I was thinking, Shae. I went and looked at the Reg's and youth season doesn't open until the 16th, so I don't think there was an open season for ducks last weekend, but I could be wrong.

He is from international falls...maybe he was hunting in Canada, I believe the season starts earlier up there.

That is correct ironman. Sorry if I got you guys worried, the canadian season opened the 10th. Another great thing about livin up north, just sucks that it's such a pain to do everything required to hunt over there. But if it adds a couple weekends to the season, it's worth it in my opinion.

I didn't mean to jump to conclusions. I think it was just a little jealousy, but I don't think you have to come on here and gloat. smile.gif Nice work up there. I have heard a few tales about the hassels of going up there. Are the Mallards getting any color to them yet? The ones that I saw on opener in ND were starting to get a little color and it wasn't too hard to pick out the drakes. Just a couple more weeks down here.

Im sorry too, i never thought of Canada, even though i know that they opened before anyplace else around here. I wish i could shoot ducks now. But anyway sorry for the confusion and good luck to all this year.

Not a problem guys, I just assume everyone is thinking about the Canadian season, but why would you if you're not planning on hunting it?

As far as mallards go, the drakes were pretty colorless. I was picking them out by the dark chest and light belly, not by the head. Going home again this weekend to hunt some wild rice. Saw lots of goldeneyes and blue-winged teal while scouting so hopefully they'll still be around. I'll post results. Hang in there, only a couple weeks til we can start banging away in MN!

Boy I don't know G-man. Thats a rough looking crew! grin.gif

Those are some nice honkers though. Is that your dad on your left? I can't tell with the face paint. I am working on my dad to go out with me when I come home, if he does this will be his first time duck hunting in over twenty years! Those were all field birds right?

Take care bud and shoot straight!!

Ya that's the old man on the left. We got permission to hunt some grain fields northwest of Stratton, ON. Took 2 years but we finally got the farmer to agree, hopefully we can get back there every year at least once.

I didn't realize your dad didnt really duck hunt. Get him out there and show him what he's missing!

Well he used to be pretty hardcore into it, but then us kids cam along and he just fazed out of it. I know that if I get him out there he will be buying stamps and licences next year again!

Take Care and Good Huntin'

Was out three times over the early season and managed four birds. Never saw more than about 150 birds on any given day. Had great fun, got totally soaked a couple times and had my kids along on two of the trips. Happy that we never got skunked. I hunt up around Duluth and would really like to hook up with some fellow goose hunters.

Hey HH, I live in Duluth and am planning on hunting the Carlton County this weekend. My Brother and I have gone to Rochester the last three years and were hooked up with a guide service there (Top Gun Guide Service) Great Guys!! and we have had a lot of great hunts with them. This year however we thought we would try it on our own, so we bought a bunch of decoys, laydowns, calls etc. I started exploring rural Carlton County looking for corn/bean fields, as that is the agricultural strip here in Northern Mn (obviously we are planning on land hunting, not water)I have a few options for fields, and the corn has been coming down the last few days. Last night we saw about 200 Geese in different flocks including about 60-70 in the field that we are hunting Saturday. Tonight I layed up in the woods at the edge of that same field. About 5:30 a flock of 50-60 came in to feed right in front of me. They landed about 15 yards in front of me. It was pretty cool when they came in I could hear their wings beating right above my head. Saturday's looking real Good !! Although I can't figure out why you can't shoot the first morning until 9:00am? I hope they don't show early!

I'm not there, so I can't tell exactly what's going on but it looks like a large area of open water developed in the last day with all of the heavy snow on the east side of wake em up Narrows. These two photos are from my Ring Camera facing north towards Niles Point.  You can see what happened with all of snow that fell in the last three days, though the open water could have been wind driven. Hard to say. .

Black Bay had great ice before but a few spots near rockpiles where there were spots of open water. It looks like the weight of the snow has created a little lake in the middle of the bay.

On the south end...   Thanks to some cold spring weather, ice fishing continues strong for those still ice fishing.  The bite remains very good.  Most resorts have pulled their fish houses off for the year, however, some still have fish houses out and others are allowing ATV and side by sides.  Check social media or call ahead to your favorite resort for specifics. Reports this week for walleyes and saugers remain excellent.   A nice mix of jumbo perch, pike, eelpout, and an occasional crappie, tullibee or sturgeon being reported by anglers. Jigging one line and using a live minnow on the second line is the way to go.  Green, glow red, pink and gold were good colors this week.     Monster pike are on a tear!  Good number of pike, some reaching over 45 inches long, being caught using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring in 8 - 14' of water.   As always, work through a resort or outfitter for ice road conditions.  Safety first always. Fish houses are allowed on the ice through March 31st, the walleye / sauger season goes through April 14th and the pike season never ends. On the Rainy River...  The river is opened up along the Nelson Park boat ramp in Birchdale, the Frontier boat ramp and Vidas boat ramp.  This past week, much of the open water skimmed over with the single digit overnight temps.   Areas of the river have popped open again and with temps getting warmer, things are shaping up for the last stretch through the rest of the spring season, which continues through April 14th.   Very good numbers of walleyes are in the river.  Reports this week, even with fewer anglers, have been good.  When temps warm up and the sun shines, things will fire up again.   Jigs with brightly colored plastics or jigs with a frozen emerald shiner have been the desired bait on the river.  Don't overlook slow trolling crankbaits upstream as well.   Good reports of sturgeon being caught on the river as well.  Sturgeon put the feed bag on in the spring.  The bite has been very good.  Most are using a sturgeon rig with a circle hook loaded with crawlers or crawlers / frozen emerald shiners. Up at the NW Angle...  Ice fishing is winding down up at the Angle.  Walleyes, saugers, and a number of various species in the mix again this week.  The bite is still very good with good numbers of fish.  The one two punch of jigging one line and deadsticking the second line is working well.   Check with Angle resorts on transport options from Young's Bay.  Call ahead for ice road guidelines.

With the drifting, kind of hard to tell for sure, but I'm guessing about a foot and still lightly snowing. Cook end!

How much snow did you get on Vermilion?
    • Mike89
lake here refroze too...  started opening again yesterday with the wet snow and wind...  very little ice left today...
    • Hookmaster
A friend who has a cabin between Alex and Fergus said the lake he's on refroze. He texted me a pic from March 12th when it was open and one from 23rd when it wasn't. 🤯

I don't think that there has been any ice melt in the past few weeks on Vermilion. Things looked like a record and then Mother Nature swept in again.   I'll give my revised guess of April 21st

As I get older it's really not just about sending bullets down range.  Some of it's just the workmanship of the gun and the wow factor. The other two guns I have really wanted which I'll never have now because of their price, is a 8mm Jap Nambu and 9mm German Luger.   Just thought they always looked cool!

I had a guy hit me with a lightly used 1969 BAR, he wanted $1650 with an older Leupold scope. More than I think they are worth, I made an offer, he declined end of story.   You know if you look at the old brochures, a grade II BAR sold for $250 in the late 60s, $1650 would be a good return on your investment.    Why would anybody want a 50 year old gun, they are heavy, have wood stocks, and blued metal.  I guess mainly to keep their gun safes glued to the floor. lol   You can probably buy a stainless rifle that you never have to clean, with a synthetic stock you never have to refinish, is as light as a feather, and for half as much money, perfect.   I'm too old for a youth gun, although I've shrunk enough that it would probably fit. lol   No Ruger 10/44s.   Jim
