I have spent much of the day hanging with the family and watching it rain but I also had a chance to glance at the calendar. Wow, September, October and November are not far away and with that comes the most exciting time of the year for me! Fishing is my passion and there is nothing better than doing it in the fall! I am really looking forward to the bite in this area as well as the bites on Gull, Mille Lacs, and Winnie. I look forward to cool mornings, "sweatshirt afternoons" and night-time trolling. It's time to start preparing for some great fall outings and I hope to see many of you on the water or in my boat!

I agree TO, only thing I don't look forward to is wet pant legs when you slip putting the boat in grin.gif

Otherwise the scenery around the lakes along with the beautiful weather and a few nice fish make if for a great time of year.

Yep I agree. I seriously need to find some pheasants as well! Fishing this time of year is what it's all about for me.

I REALLY gotta get moving on the lights for the boat, the sun is going to start setting earlier soon...

I'm more partial to the fishing but hunting is an option too I guess. grin.gif

Otter, one does not have to be partial to either, just do them all.One can fish and hunt all IF one has the time.I am lucky enough to have the time and a wife that says go.How can you beat that? smile.gif

The fall walleye fishing down in your area is tough to beat! Last fall was a lot of fun! I'm sure going to miss not being in the area this fall frown.gif But I still plan on making a few trips down that way wink.gif

Fall fishing? I've never done it before, ever. You can always find me at home around noon on the weekends plucking big Canada geese, woodies, mallards, and divers. grin.gif

That may change this year though. Goose hunting is very very good around here, but the ducks just seem to keep disappearing. So I may just wreak some havoc on fish this fall, or at least give them a chance to laugh at my presentation. wink.gif

Eric, it has been a long time since I've seen a "?" behind fall fishing. smirk.gif You need to rethink the waterfowl hunting and start chasing 'eyes. Maybe we'll be able to curve your way of thinking on October 14. grin.gif

Anyone who misses the fall bite is just too busy, squeeze in a couple of days and you will be hooked. B.C. probley would forget all about those ducks and geese.

The goose hunting, for me is in December, so they will have to wait. grin.gif

Eric, you're welcome to hop in with me again on October 14.

Ahhh....ducks and geese. That's one thing I could never forget. It's been molded into my blood. smile.gif A walleye or two to mix things up would sure be nice though. wink.gif

Now you know I can't refuse that offer TO! grin.gif Same boat rig or different one by then? wink.gif Just curious how that's going, if it is still going for ya.

The rig we're looking at....well, we've switched what we want about 30 times in the past couple months, or so it seems. crazy.gifcrazy.gifwink.gif We need to buy a new a/c & furnace (bad coil on a/c and furnace starting to leak CO). So much for our boat down payment! Still though, we're eyeing up an Alumacraft Tournament Sport at this time, but with the way things are going, that'll likely change before I'm done writing this. crazy.gifconfused.giftongue.gifgrin.gif

I'm going to finish this open water season with the rig I have. I'll have a new rig in the spring. smirk.gif

Hunting season is great. It takes the people off the lakes and leaves the great fishing for the rest of us. grin.gif

Hunting is a lot of fun too though. Nothing better than watching my lab flush roosters or make a long, ice breaking retrieve on a greenhead.

My fall season is probably split 50/50 between hunting and fishing. Since I am living in MN now it will probably be more fishing this year.

Fall has to be the best and worst time of year. If only a guy could go on no sleep.

  • 2 weeks later...

My wife and I were up at Vermilion last week Wed., Thurs. and Fri. Talk about a fall feel. Thursday the high was 70 and Wednesday the high was 64! Mornings were in the low 50's. Plus a couple of trees were just starting to change color. smile.gif

I saw one heck of a nice buck about 500yds away from where we were staying. Crossed the road in front of us, went 20yds or so out and stood there and looked at us. Very nice 8-point (or 4x4 if you're weird). grin.gif Brow tines were probably around 6", and the other antlers were in that 8" - 10" range with a 16" - 18" spread. I would have taken him in my book.

Although there was an east/southeast wind, there was a "good chop" on the lake (2' - 3'ers) and it was completely overcast. I only got about 1/2 day of fishing in each day. frown.gif Maybe next time I leave my wife home. shocked.gif Oooooo I hope she doesn't read this! blush.gifgrin.gif

Bc

I guess I am sometimes different as those westerners all call them 4x4 or 6x6's.If they are a 6x6 doesnt matter what they are called as long as they are in the back of my truck.Right smile.gifsmile.gifFor the first few years I hunted to the west it took awhile to get use to that lingo.I just call them a 8-10-12 pointers. smile.gif

Yep, that's what we do, except we call them 5, 6, or 8 pointers as the area we hunt, we don't see anything bigger than that anymore. frown.gif Too much hunting pressure.

Maybe they can only count so high and then have to start over again??? shocked.gif There are only 5 fingers on each hand, so that may have something to do with it too. shocked.gif

Very low, probably 2 feet lower than last year at ice out.

what do they look like this spring?
    • SkunkedAgain
I might have missed a guess, but here are the ones that I noted:   JerkinLips – March 27th, then April 7th Brianf. – March 28th Bobberwatcher – April…. MikeG3Boat – April 10th SkunkedAgain – early April, then April 21st   Definitely a tough year for guesses, as it seemed to be a no-brainer early ice out. Then it got cold and snowed again.

      No, that wasn't me.  I drive a 621 Ranger.

So, that was you in the camo lund? I'm bummed, I have to head back to the cities tomorrow for a few days, then back up for at least a few weeks. Got the dock in and fired up to get out chasing some crappies till opener!

On the south end...   Lots of ice on the main basin, but it is definitely deteriorating.  Some anglers have been fishing the open water at the mouth of the Rainy River in front of the Lighthouse Gap.  The rest of the basin is still iced over. Pike enthusiasts caught some big pike earlier last week tip up fishing in pre-spawn areas adjacent to traditional spawning areas.  8 - 14' of water using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring has been the ticket.  Ice fishing for all practical purposes is done for the year. The focus for the basin moving forward will be pike transitioning into back bays to spawn,  This is open water fishing and an opportunity available as the pike season is open year round on Lake of the Woods. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. With both the ice fishing and spring fishing on the Rainy River being so good, many are looking forward to the MN Fishing Opener on Saturday, May 11th.  It should be epic. On the Rainy River...  An absolutely incredible week of walleye and sturgeon fishing on the Rain Rainy River.     Walleye anglers, as a rule, caught good numbers of fish and lots of big fish.  This spring was one for the books.   To follow that up, the sturgeon season is currently underway and although every day can be different, many boats have caught 30 - 40 sturgeon in a day!  We have heard of fish measuring into the low 70 inch range.  Lots in the 60 - 70 inch range as well.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  Open water is continuing to expand in areas with current.  The sight of open water simply is wetting the pallet of those eager for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th.   A few locals were on the ice this week, targeting pike.  Some big slimers were iced along with some muskies as well.  If you like fishing for predators, LOW is healthy!
    • Brianf.
Early bird gets the worm some say...   I have it on good authority that this very special angler caught no walleyes or muskies and that any panfish caught were released unharmed.
