Fall Bite

4 posts in this topic

I don't want to say it has started but I think with an early and hot summer we are going to have an early fall bite. Last night I was on a small Lake north of Duluth and water temps were 74 On a whim we were throwing large spinner baits and were reward with some 2-2.5# bass up in the shallows. The thing was the Northerns were slamming everything that we threw out there. Spinnnerbaits, Buzz baits and stick top baits were all getting big time hits. Had several fish completely clearing the water on their rushes. One buzz bait had three northerns go after it at the same time, I hooked one while another flew over the top and a 3rd flashed at the boat coming from the direction of the strike. the fish were from 3-5 pounds and we had two fish in the 35-40" class slashed at us right at the boat. We quickly went from Bass fishing to Northern fishing. Hoping this is the start of a fall bite, with water temps slowly starting to drop I am reminded why I spend most of my fall fishing instead of working.

Fall can be the best bite of the year.Problem is ,so can all kinds of hunting and not enough time to do it all.

You know there are times that I really miss being married and having the kids running around needing to be taken to sports or school functions or what ever. The wife needing you to do this or that to help her out.

This time of year isn't one of them though...

(btw I am divorced and my children are grown) wink.gifgrin.gif

You're running up against a political position here, not a logical one. I'm struggling to remember if it was Pawlenty or Ventura but one of them started to swing things heavily towards "fees" because they could argue that they weren't new taxes. I think that mentality has permeated through many layers of government by now, so I'm not surprised to hear someone from the DNR state that fishing license fees aren't taxes.   It doesn't really matter, we are paying to use something that requires money to stock and manage. Whatever it's called, it will never be free unless fishing pressure drastically decreases.

Spent a few hours on Skogman yesterday. (3:00 to 6:30)  Most of the time the vexlar was so lit up that you couldn't see the lure. Bad news is that they were very small sunnies and crappies. Fished in the area of the cluster of ice houses in  24  ft water. No fish kept this time out. Good ice but getting a little sloppy.

Another Spring-like day on Thursday. I got skunked but my buddy landed a couple of nice ones. C & R.

Very true! Cenaiko Lake had at least 100 houses on it at 7 in the morning on Saturday and it is only a 28 acres. It is absolutely packed with fish though.

Even in the metro the little bit of snow pack is insulating the ice pretty well so far. I've been out 3 days in a row and haven't noticed any significant melting. The forecasted rain for the next few days will probably change things a little.
