Just checked on the the results thus far. Seelhoff had quite the first day--4 fish--19.58!! Anybody go to weigh in? Curious how many fish these guys are putting in the boat to get their fish.

Was out fishing Thursday morning near 9mile flat, I counted aleast 25 tourny boats trolling cranks in the same area. I heard the Leader of day 1 had 2 over 28" trollong cranks also.

I was just wondering, does anyone know the ruling on why there is no upgrading in this tournament? Is it due to the fact we're in the month of August and a fishes survival rate is much lower than that of a fish in June? The Ottertail PWT was an upgradable event and the state allows upgrading until a posession limit is reached. I'm sure if upgrading were allowed all of those teams with less than four fish would have been fine. Don't get me wrong I like the strategy involved but as a tournament angler would like to upgrade!

By state law you are not allowed to cull or upgrade fish in your live under any circumstance. Once a fish is placed in the live well it cannot be released. So does the PWT break state laws often?

Mark 13 does not mention culling in his post. Upgrading in a tournament, like Mark is talking about means having say a 4 fish limit to weigh but you can have 5 fish in the box or a 6 fish limit with 8 in the boat. The PWT is not breaking any laws.

I think the limit is four on milac's this year. so no upgrading, but I don't fish it for walleys any more.

eyesoneyes you are incorrect on this issue. You are allowed to upgrade until a posession limit is maintained. I fish many tournaments and have been in contact with the DNR directly on this issue. This is a very misinterprated rule across the state. I'm not trying to sound harsh about the issue and understand the four fish limit being set as this was the case on Ottertail as well where the limit is six. On Ottertail however everyone weighed in at the end while I noticed teams in this particular tourney weighing in early putting them at a disadvantage for being successful.

Mark:1313 There must be confusion at the DNR. I called the DNR enforcement division after reading your post this morning. They stated once a fish is put in the live well it cannot be returned to the lake. I believe this has been the law for many years.

The livewell rule exists except in a tournament situation, then these fish are to be returned to the lake. The livewell is just a means to keep the fish alive until weigh in, when they will be returned to the lake. There are slight variations to rules for the general public and rules for fishing tournaments.

can someone explain why tournaments are allowed to have rules different from what the rest of us must abide by? these people are already profiting off a PUBLIC resource, and then they get special treatment as well? talk about WRONG!!

i have to say it is nice to see the rules getting a bit more stringent after the findings of the release studies at pwt events and delayed mortality.

boy your gonna make friends fast..... SO what your saying is noone would be catching fish or advancing the sport if it wasn't for you tournament anglers? Give me a break... get off your high horse.... Thats about the most condesending, and cocky statement I have ever read on FM..... Have a good one confused.gif

I prefished the tournament with some of the pros last weekend. All I can say is, boy those guys can fish! But I hope they can come back to Mille Lacs during a better time of the year. I think even those guys were having a hard time putting slot fish in the boat. It says something when over half of the 60 entries couldn't even bring in a limit of walleyes. Why not bring them in May or June?

I contacted Michael Hamm the Director of Enforcement. He holds the highest post in the Enforcement Division. According to Mr. Hamm once you put a fish in your live well it counts towards your limit. If your are on Mille Lacs and come in with a limit of Walleyes in your live well and release them because you don’t feel like cleaning them, then you have caught your limit for the day and are not allowed to keep any more Walleyes.

I also contacted DNR. Same ruling once in posession you can not replace with another fish. I also asked if you could continue to fish walleye with your limit in the boat.

Was told you can continue fishing for walleyes(in season)as long as you dont replace any in live well.

Mille Lacs is a No cull, No Sort lake -- yes, that means that once you decide to put a fish in the livewell, it is your fish. And once you reach your possession limit - which is 4 per person - you are done fishing. Either the PWT or the DNR tournament permit TIGHTENED the regulation and only allowed 4 fish (per 2 anglers ) to be in the boat. Once they had 4 they were finished fishing for the day. There are lakes in MN where you can cull, however Mille Lacs is not one of them.

Tournament rules are USUALLY stricter then the rules for those of us that are just out fishing for the day. Not sure why Dano thought/thinks tournament anglers don't have to follow the rules confused.gif

We fish the Minnesota Tournament Trail - which allows us to weigh 6 fish (per team of 2 people) but we can have 8 in the boat. Again once you make the decision to put that last fish in the livewell you are done. The scales are open all day - knowing that some of the teams will come in early with therir fish.

Good fishing to everyone.

Vickie -- You're wrong about the "done" statement. When you have 4 in the well you can continue fishing catch and release, because you are no longer reducing any 'eyes to possession (possession means you failed to immediately release the fish -- you put it in a bucket, livewell, stringer, etc). In a tournament, obviously you're going to be "done" at that point, because you're no longer going to move up in the standings with catch and release -- but recreational fisherman can continue to catch and release with their limit in the well. That's what the previous poster was saying and he was correct. Catch and immediate release of fish is only illegal if targeting a fish during a closed season or without proper license for targeted species (trout, for instance).

I think half you guys are wrong, if you have a tournement with two anglers in a boat these two anglers are allowed 4 fish each on milacs (of the right sizes or course) during the fishing the anglers might put 6 fish in the livewell and then when weigh-in occurs they weigh their biggest 4 fish!

unless the pwt had a specific rule saying the anglers are only allowed to have 4 fish in their livewell at any point I would think the above would apply.

Most tournements I've fished have been ruled the first way not the second.

PWT Superpro rules were 4 fish per day per boat total. 4 fish total for two guys, not 4 each.

Once it's in the livewell it can't be replaced with a bigger fish.

Personally I've never heard of a tournament that didn't have rules that were tighter and more restrictive than state or lake-specific regulations. The pwt rules on mille lacs were tighter than the lake-specific regulations.

The guy that posted the rules deleted the posts himself. If you read his published print columns and articles you will find that he is forever whining about the advances in fishing and technology, and how the spots he used to have to himself are now covered with boats -- he was whining about that in his posts here -- and he's whining about them now on another board. I agree completely with what river rat316 said to the guy. My opinion is he doesn't like getting debated on it in an open forum.

Dearest "Perchjerker", "River-- whatever" and all,

I am more than happy to come here and elsewhere, in any setting you prefer, be it on my own phone(218-678-3103) or?? and answer any questions you might have or help you with any fishing related efforts you are pursueing. I will even "debate" issues with HARD FACTS on the table.

That said; Here is something that is NOT debatable! I WILL NOT POST HERE NOR ANYWHERE ELSE, IF THE OTHER POSTERS DO NOT SIGN THEIR FULL NAME AND HAVE ALL RELATIVE PERSONAL CONTACT INFO IN THEIR PROFILE.

"Perchjerker"...you better watch your facts...as I do not do "columns". Check out the first names on the writings you refer to. I assume you are referring to Outdoor News. ME on "whining on another site"?? Please enlighten me. lol

END of discussion!

My apologies if I have confused you with someone else.

But I read what you posted here before it was deleted, the jist of it being we should all be thanking you tournament anglers. And there is a fellegy making similar posts on another forum, unless they have been deleted too. Perhaps I was wrong in assuming that was you, but I believe the poster's id was identical to the one you used in this forum.

Are you are saying you don't have published articles, or that you don't have published "columns"? Maybe I made a distinction that shouldn't have been made, but I was not referring to joe's writing in ON.

perchjerker,

i too would like to know which other forum you are refering to. would you provide a link or send me a PM with that information. as steve has stated, i too support having to sign your posts with your real name. by doing this, i think it will cut down on the pot stiring and bashing that go's on on most of these forums. what are you afraid of in signing your real name to the bottom of your posts? i myself am not involved in the fishing industry in any way, shape or form, nor do i write a column in any magazine or paper. i work in the public safety industry............tom fellegy

I'm not there, so I can't tell exactly what's going on but it looks like a large area of open water developed in the last day with all of the heavy snow on the east side of wake em up Narrows. These two photos are from my Ring Camera facing north towards Niles Point.  You can see what happened with all of snow that fell in the last three days, though the open water could have been wind driven. Hard to say. .

Black Bay had great ice before but a few spots near rockpiles where there were spots of open water. It looks like the weight of the snow has created a little lake in the middle of the bay.

On the south end...   Thanks to some cold spring weather, ice fishing continues strong for those still ice fishing.  The bite remains very good.  Most resorts have pulled their fish houses off for the year, however, some still have fish houses out and others are allowing ATV and side by sides.  Check social media or call ahead to your favorite resort for specifics. Reports this week for walleyes and saugers remain excellent.   A nice mix of jumbo perch, pike, eelpout, and an occasional crappie, tullibee or sturgeon being reported by anglers. Jigging one line and using a live minnow on the second line is the way to go.  Green, glow red, pink and gold were good colors this week.     Monster pike are on a tear!  Good number of pike, some reaching over 45 inches long, being caught using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring in 8 - 14' of water.   As always, work through a resort or outfitter for ice road conditions.  Safety first always. Fish houses are allowed on the ice through March 31st, the walleye / sauger season goes through April 14th and the pike season never ends. On the Rainy River...  The river is opened up along the Nelson Park boat ramp in Birchdale, the Frontier boat ramp and Vidas boat ramp.  This past week, much of the open water skimmed over with the single digit overnight temps.   Areas of the river have popped open again and with temps getting warmer, things are shaping up for the last stretch through the rest of the spring season, which continues through April 14th.   Very good numbers of walleyes are in the river.  Reports this week, even with fewer anglers, have been good.  When temps warm up and the sun shines, things will fire up again.   Jigs with brightly colored plastics or jigs with a frozen emerald shiner have been the desired bait on the river.  Don't overlook slow trolling crankbaits upstream as well.   Good reports of sturgeon being caught on the river as well.  Sturgeon put the feed bag on in the spring.  The bite has been very good.  Most are using a sturgeon rig with a circle hook loaded with crawlers or crawlers / frozen emerald shiners. Up at the NW Angle...  Ice fishing is winding down up at the Angle.  Walleyes, saugers, and a number of various species in the mix again this week.  The bite is still very good with good numbers of fish.  The one two punch of jigging one line and deadsticking the second line is working well.   Check with Angle resorts on transport options from Young's Bay.  Call ahead for ice road guidelines.

With the drifting, kind of hard to tell for sure, but I'm guessing about a foot and still lightly snowing. Cook end!

How much snow did you get on Vermilion?
    • Mike89
lake here refroze too...  started opening again yesterday with the wet snow and wind...  very little ice left today...
    • Hookmaster
A friend who has a cabin between Alex and Fergus said the lake he's on refroze. He texted me a pic from March 12th when it was open and one from 23rd when it wasn't. 🤯
    • SkunkedAgain
I don't think that there has been any ice melt in the past few weeks on Vermilion. Things looked like a record and then Mother Nature swept in again.   I'll give my revised guess of April 21st

As I get older it's really not just about sending bullets down range.  Some of it's just the workmanship of the gun and the wow factor. The other two guns I have really wanted which I'll never have now because of their price, is a 8mm Jap Nambu and 9mm German Luger.   Just thought they always looked cool!

I had a guy hit me with a lightly used 1969 BAR, he wanted $1650 with an older Leupold scope. More than I think they are worth, I made an offer, he declined end of story.   You know if you look at the old brochures, a grade II BAR sold for $250 in the late 60s, $1650 would be a good return on your investment.    Why would anybody want a 50 year old gun, they are heavy, have wood stocks, and blued metal.  I guess mainly to keep their gun safes glued to the floor. lol   You can probably buy a stainless rifle that you never have to clean, with a synthetic stock you never have to refinish, is as light as a feather, and for half as much money, perfect.   I'm too old for a youth gun, although I've shrunk enough that it would probably fit. lol   No Ruger 10/44s.   Jim
