Spoke with a friend this morning that fished near Manitou yesterday afternoon and he said it's starting to muddy up pretty good there. Looking at the usgs guaging station on the LF it's came up near 3 foot in the past 2 days so it'll let go anytime now.

Not sure if it's from the Forks or the run off, but it sounds like the river's a mess today. Spoke to a buddy on the water this morning and he said it's a mess. Said they had caught one fish all morning and hadn't seen another fish caught. Crap! Couldn't it have held out for a few more days?!?

Scoot wheres your friend fishing at? Man oh man this rain, rain can go away, some of the news stories and predictions for river crests out in the RR valley are a bit alarming eh. Some of those tribs down your way sound like they could be pretty bad off too. After '97 and '02 I crindge whenever I hear 'flood stage'.....Yikes.

I just talked to the guy from lucky bait and the lady from clementsons. The guy at lucky bait said the clarity was still two feet and the fishing should be ok for the weekend and will probably be too muddy by mon- wednesday. The way I see it, if the eyes arent biting, there are always some sturgeon to catch! wink.gif

Fisky, he put in at Clementson but was upstream from the Rapid River. He also pulled out and went down to Birchdale and had the same report. Last I talked to him he was headed for Pelland early this afternoon. If it's a runoff issue, it might be no better there. Sounds like the water clarity reports from yesterday aren't very accurate as of this morning. If you take the above mentioned approach and simply hunt sturgeon in the murky water, you can't go wrong. But if you're strictly chasing eyes, it might be a rough weekend.

Sorry- don't kill the messenger.

Fisky, yeah, I hear ya. Flood stage makes some shake in their boots around here. If we can have some dry weather for a while I hope we'll sneak by.

Lots and lots of water in the ditches and fields between Warroad and MOrrisPoint, ditches had rapids and whirlpools in them. Some were about to overflow within an inch, while on the other side of the culvert would be almost empty. The water was starting to washout this one gravel road i was on near Swift. So much for next thursday, I worked all day shoveling and tugging to get the boat out of the yard and ready.

The water levels West of Clementson doesn't really mud the Rainy, it's the Little Fork river turning into a "power washer" if the ice hasn't broken when the levels rise due to rain/run-off. Once it breaks and if you watch the gauges, you may see some cleaner water before the end of the season. confused.gif And the walleyes will be really hungry once they can feed again!

You do have the option of fishing out of Pelland, the ramp at Hwy 11 and Hwy 71 located about 9 miles West of I-Falls. If it's the Little Fork making the Rainy muddy, you will be above the muddy water. I have heard of anglers putting in at Pelland and fishing close to the muddy water. Once the walleyes find the clearer water, they will be hungry!

Good luck and like the earlier posts, don't forget, sturgeon don't care if the water is muddy, place some scent on your presentation and you should hook some sturgeon.

Gee . . . I miss all the action up there!

Currently living in the Sandstone/Hinckley area. Alot of time spent with family and enjoying the grandkids! Of course lots and lots of Nascar racing. It's a different lifestyle from running a resort, we miss it and the people. Art and Gail are doing a good job and we keep in contact with them. They will be a great assess to the anglers!

Thanks for asking about us! grin.gif

Sandee, What did you guys do just trade properties?

Yes Clementson seems to be in good hands. Very friendly people. Just dont go for a snowmobile ride with Art! blush.gif

Gail seems to be catching onto the website deal just fine.

See ya all again next year or if it clears up by wed/thurs.

We bought Art and Gail's house from them. Nice 3BR home within an hour of family, a little further north than I wanted to be, but it seems to be working for us.

Yes they are doing well there, I knew they would, it was easy on the mind selling to them. They have the personality for the business, which is a big plus. Younger and enthusiastic to say the least.

Ya I was surprised to see how young they were. Lots of good years ahead of them.

As long as Art takes it easy on that snowmobile. wink.gif

Does anyone know how Four-Mile bay looks. Last year we launched by the mouth...I think it was by Wheelers Point and fished in Four-Mile for sturgeon and had good luck. We are coming up next Saturday. Will we be able to do the same this year? Or will we have to fish in the river itself? Thanks for any help.

As of this afternoon you can launch a full size boat at Wheelers Point public access, there was some nice size ice chunks floating by also, looks like the water was cruising pretty good too! once it opens up in the gap area you should be able to find some fish somewhere in the bay or gap. It will get better if we get no downpours. I got crawlers now too.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
