Novotny's

6 posts in this topic

I got the double bummer in a week, first 169 Sports closes it's doors in Belle Plaine, so yesterday I went down to Monty to get bait only to find out that Larry and Alice have closed the doors as of last Wednesday. Ended up going to Shieldsville to get bait. I do fish the Southern lakes every now and again and this only makes it tougher to find good bait. The business is tough and I will miss Larry and company.

WOW... I used to go there for bait lots of times! Was the closest place there was to Hooterville to get bait when the guy in town was not open. Are they closed for good or what? Seemed like there was always some business there. Where do you go in Shieldsville? Have a good one and N Joy the Hunt././Jimbo

In Shieldsville there is the gas station (Lakeside One Stop) that has a very good selection of bait.

In Lonsdale there is also a bait shop

Yeah, I hang out and BS with Kyle a lot at the Lonsdale bait shop, but some days at the time I want to go fishing he is not there so I used to run to Novotny's on those days. Do they have a good selection of minnows at the gas station? Thanks and N Joy the Hunt././Jimbo

They have Shiners, crappies, fatheads, and suckers.

Yes, I too went to get some minnows yesterday and found that they've closed up. Quite a shame, because they were a good source of bait, equipment, licenses, gas and good tips on where the fish were biting and close to home. I'm going to miss them. I know the place was for sale.

There's still driveable ice in the Ely area.

We were fishing tip-ups for pike and jigging spoons for perch over by Terry's the last few weeks. There were quite a few perch in the 3-10" range. Sometimes we had ten marks on our screens at once. They were in shallow, 6-8', and the big pike were chasing them.   Also, Rocky Reef had some pockets where the perch were thick this winter. Those tended to be in 11-16'.    I still think the perch are in there, but they're difficult to find under the ice.   Get the boat out there and idle around side-scanning for baitfish pods, kand you'll see a lot of what look like perch schools.

White Sand had 12 inches last Monday when I fished it.  ice cracked and began shifting a few days ago.  Interesting year as ice is still tight to shoreline, but some of those cracks that developed a few days ago are up anywhere from a foot to 5 feet wide now.      I'm done. was hoping to hit N.Long one last time but not worth the risk anymore.

46 inch pike in MN sort of a stretch as well, although I was "only" about 5 inches short on one last summer. (on vermilion)
