Training Pigeons

5 posts in this topic

I have a pup away at bird training school right now, he will be back next week. I want to keep his training going once he returns. Is there anyone in the Metro Area or reasonably close to the metro that has pigeons for sale? I have a place to keep them and conduct the training I just need the birds.

Has anyone used a pigeon trap? Is it effective?

dosgnroosters,

Pigeon traps work great!! All free birds with no limits! What I found is under any under-pass that has a ledge up underneath to set traps works great. It is best to leave the trap open for free food for a few days then set it so the free lunch is over.(Cracked Corn works great). Other options for trapping are finding apartment buildings or office buildings that need thier pigeons controlled or removed from thier roofs or parking ramps.

When trapping under bridges the best time to work the traps are very early morning before traffic is out that way PETA people won't see you or your trap locations. The DNR & DOT are completly OK with trapping the birds. They are an un-protected bird. Usual bag will be from 2-3 birds a day what ever the trap will fit.

I have a new pup coming in june & have already scoped out some local metro spots on my drive to & from work for possible trapping locations. the trap connfiguration I use is the one developed in the author Wolters books.

Good luck!

Chris

Thanks for the info.

Another question on the pigeon traps. I have heard that it works best to place 1 pigeon in the trap as a confidence decoy. Of course that only works after you have caught or bought a bird. Any idea if this is true? I suppose if I can get 2-3 / day just with corn, there is no need for the decoy.

One thing I've done is shot them with a sling shot. You have to be a little careful not to use too big of ammo and pull back too far, otherwise you can actually kill the bird instead of just stunning them. With a little practice, I'm able to stun one on the first shot, walk over and just pick it up. May want to find a secluded area if you want to try this method, might offend some people. Just another option I guess.

Just got back into town from a slightly too long "vacation" dealing with relatives. Anywho, how has the fishing been on Superior, are the fish local or have they migrated N.E?

I just bought a new Elite 7TI and the sun cover it came with doesn't really snap on very securely.  I'd say it just rests loosely on the outside.  It won't fall off if I flip it upside down, but it feels like it wouldn't stay on going down the highway or withstand any sort of jarring.  It takes hardly any pressure to pull it off.  Is this normal or is it a defect?  I've never owned a graph with a sun cover so I'm not familiar, but I imagined it would be a lot more snug.

I have a Lowrance Elite 7 and was curious what lake chip most of you recommend for Lake of the Woods.  The insight pro chip that came with my unit is very basic for up there and was looking for a more detailed chip.  I'm not sure what brands are compatible with the Lowrance and which ones aren't.        Thanks in advance!

Glad it didn't take a swim. My buddy had one of the cheaper Minnkotas deploy while he was up on plane using the main motor.  Needless to say it was a weak pin in the release system. It was a rental boat so he didn't have to deal with it. Bent the heck out of the stem portion. It was fully modified!   Didnt know now you were still going up to LOTW. Thought you were selling the place. Assuming you don't have the Sportcraft anymore since I don't think you'd put a Minnkota on that. If you still have the Sportcraft I know someone that might be interested in it.    I head up to South end out of Wheelers point tomorrow after work. Up for 2 weeks. Touch base with me if you are coming up or have the Sportcraft still for sale.   Ryan

Thanks for the information. I believe yours must be different by the sounds of it. Mine looks like the one below. A bolt actually goes through the pin and bolts onto the actual trolling motor and you have to pull the lever completely out to remove it from the boat.

Crawlers work great for a mixed bag of fish.  Fresh cut bait like suckers or shad work great for channel cats.  I've never fished North Lake in Red Wing. Have fun!

Have you or anyone tried North Lake in Red Wing by Treasure Island?? Just curious if anything have been biting there?
