Hitting Pepin tomorrow and Saturday

4 posts in this topic

Hi all, I plan on launching at Colville tomorrow and Saturday, first open water of the year for me.

I've heard varying reports of debris, water levels, etc., and have checked out the DNR and Corps of Engineers web sites, I don't see anything too scary, anyone disagree?

I don't plan on visiting the dam, I want to stay mostly on the north end of Pepin itself targeting the Wisconsin side, anyone been over there the past few days?

I'm in a 21' Crestliner, green with an FM sticker on the back in case you're out, and I always keep my VHF on.

Harpoon,

I leave it on Channel 16 until hail to a different channel. I'm leaving the house at 7am tomorrow morning, be there before 8am. You can hail KPJ5BR and I'll pick up at that.

Thanks!

Well, just thought I'd leave a little report from today.

one 17" walleye in the boat, 4 or 5 other missed fish (really light biters), and one huge catfish foul hooked in the back.

And about 700 other boats. Went up to the dam, it was worse than 494 on a Friday afternoon, so left there and went down to fisherman's cut. That's where the walleye came from on jig and minnow.

There are two main spawning spots on Vermilion that I know of. I'm near the one on the west end of Vermilion. The walleye haven't been as good on this end yet they don't pull any fish out from here. They've been pulling walleye out of the east end spawning spot in Pike Bay, and for some reason walleye have been doing better over there.   I have no doubt that there are many variables that go into the equation, but you can't ignore that the end they put the 10% back into has been doing better than the one where they leave it alone.
